Rocket Salvage 5

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 7:00 PM

Primo Rocket faces demons of the past and present as things come to a conclusion in this critically acclaimed work of titans.

Clones will not save you. Neural links will not save you. When the shit hits the fan, all of the technology in the world won’t keep you from getting drenched in a poo flurry. Actions have consequences, and true escape is impossible.

How’s Rocket gonna get out of this one? Well, he’ll salvage what he can from his past failures and use what he gathers to (hopefully) kick ass.

It’s called Boom! Studios because every comic book they publish is a lit stick of dynamite. They have a website and a Facebook, and are in stock anywhere that carries good comic books.

The Rocket family is split! With Zeta training under a mad scientist, Beta working under a local crime lord, and Primo stuck in a Republic of Galaxies prison, it's going to take more than a big wrench and an apology to get this family back together!

A house divided! Zeta, the Scarlet Witch of space, is learning to channel her psychic abilities, only replace “no more mutants” with “I can control every machine for fun”. Beta is harnessing his inner chi to make some quick silver, and by that I mean he’s collaborating with the sleeze-bags of space to make money while doing less work. And during all of this family drama, dear old dad is in another superjail, having carrots dangled in front of him as he gazes upon his freedom from Asteroid R.

Bachan is great at drawing ball dropping covers and titillating splash pages, but he’s also fantastic at drawing faces. Whether the face is human or alien, it’s an expressive and good looking face. I could use any of these faces as my Steam avatar, and online nerds would ask me “where did you find that awesome face?”.

“Bachan drew it.” I would reply. “He’s good at drawing faces.”

Boom! Studios was originally named Bazinga! Studios, until Jim Parsons sued them for making too much money. Check them out on their website or on Facebook.

Rocket Salvage 3

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 1:00 PM

Behind the wheel of a salvage space hauler, on the run from an armada of robot religious zealots, and catering to the whims of a wild, mad scientist alien, the Rockets are in for a lot more than they bargained for. Luckily, if life has taught them anything, it is that nothing good ever comes easy.

In just two short issues, Primo Rocket has gone from being a washed up, failed ex-celebrity to an insane man with a death wish, piloting his death rocket through the bowels of space just to see what it’s like. On Team Rocket (ha!) are clones, an alien doctor, and a dog. And much like failed experiment Sonic the Hedgehog, Primo Rocket has gotta go fast. Only when he goes fast, it’s thanks to a neural link that connects him to machine, resulting in jaw dropping space antics.

What else can I say about illustrator/secret neurosurgeon Bachan at this point? He’s very good at bringing Mercado’s far out ideas to life. If Primo has a neural link to his rocket ship, Bachan has a neural link to pen and paper.

Buy Rocket Salvage from Boom! Studios on their website or on Facebook. Buy it right now, spend your Secret Wars money on this instead.

Rocket Salvage 2

When Primo Rocket finds out the alien and robot federation are gunning after him in search of a long-lost mythical weapon, he has no choice but to rope his family into an adventure across the galaxy to find the alien responsible. Too bad he is locked away in the most dangerous and impenetrable Kaijer Prison Planet known to man!

Fun fact: Yehudi Mercado is currently working with Marvel for a Guardians of the Galaxy mobile game. I would say that he’s a good choice for that project, considering Rocket Salvage is what Guardians of the Galaxy could be if Marvel wasn’t too busy trying to make Star-Lord look more like Chris Pratt. Poor Primo Rocket was a star lord, but an arrogance fueled racing accident set him on a crash course through hell. Now he must claw his way out of Prison Planet, using only scraps and what passes for a family in space to escape.

Bachan continues to illustrate this book with the finesse and talent of Alex Ross, if Alex Ross internalized Japanese culture and American cartoons instead of boring old paintings. There is a tremendous amount of talent behind every page of this book, is what I’m saying.

To buy Rocket Salvage immediately, go to Boom! Studios on their website or on Facebook. Alternatively, just yell at your local comic shop to carry their books if they don’t for some reason.

Rocket Salvage 1

Primo Rocket used to be the fastest speeder-racer in the galaxy, but after a crash that sealed the fate of his space-station-city home, Rio Rojo, Primo has resigned himself to life as a lowly spaceship salvage yard owner. However, his two “kids”--harvest clone Beta, and Betas genius girl-clone Zeta--cant seem to keep out of trouble. When the dysfunctional family suddenly becomes the target of an intergalactic manhunt, the family has to come together to save their home.

What do you get when you combine Firefly, F-Zero, and Disney/Pixar’s Cars? If you answered “a horrible fever dream”, you’re right. But the second answer is Rocket Salvage. Primo Rocket is a fatter, sadder Lightning McQueen, if Lightning McQueen made a fatal mistake on the racetrack and drank away the rest of his life in Radiator Springs. Writer/ideaman Yehudi Mercado uses an inter-galactic raceway to explore themes of corruption, trans-humanism, and lineage. It’s pretty cool!

Illustrator Bachan brings these far-out ideas to life, resulting in a colorful, optimistic world that’s dripping with slime and grit. You feel it all through these pictures, the soaring highs of the raceway and the crushing lows of personal defeat.

To answer your questions, such as “how do I buy this” and “how quickly can I own this comic book”, check out Boom! Studios on Facebook or in your dreams when you’re sleeping at night.

Rocket Salvage 4

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

The Rocket family is split! With Zeta training under a mad scientist, Beta working under a local crime lord, and Primo stuck in a Republic of Galaxies prison, it's going to take more than a big wrench and an apology to get this family back together!

With just one issue left after this, I can already feel myself anxious to see how this ends.  As much as I've been hoping they might make more, I'm really not sure that they will with the way the story is going.  So, going into issue four of Rocket Salvage, I am going to continue to enjoy it while it lasts and see what happens.

The challenges have not been more difficult for the Rockets, with them being torn in three different directions.  Zeta is still trying to get her powers under control.  Beta has been swayed into helping out one of the bad guys.  And with this happening, Primo has been captured and has to use his crafty ways to get out and save his family.

I really have to mention the cover here first as far as art goes, because wow, it's just a beautifully done piece.  Not to leave the internal artwork without any love, that's been just as great as it's always been.  The pages for this book have been really awesome to follow along with since the beginning and has stayed strong throughout which says a lot about a title.

I'm definitely going to be sad once the next and final issue comes out.  Yet, I'm going to be quite pleased to have taken part in this super fun journey.  With just one book left, don't wait any longer to join in and grab the four out so far.

Rocket Salvage 3

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Behind the wheel of a salvage space hauler, on the run from an armada of robot religious zealots, and catering to the whims of a wild, mad scientist alien, the Rockets are in for a lot more than they bargained for. Luckily, if life has taught them anything, it is that nothing good ever comes easy.

Right from the beginning of the series, things have been no less than breakneck speed fast.  I suppose with a space adventure with a main character that used to race that makes sense.  That point aside though, I can't even imagine how Rocket Salvage can end at this pace with only one issue left after this one, but I'm totally anxious to find out.

The Rocket family has never exactly had an easy life, but they certainly have had anything but a dull one lately.  Now that Zeta is in full realization of who and what she is, that knowledge quickly becomes necessary in their predicament.  Even with that ace in the hole, Primo makes a sacrifice as any good dad would to ensure their safety.  The full consequences of that sacrifice are to be seen, but a ghost from his past shows up at the end to make it all the more complicated.

The artwork for this series has been so great to look at and follow along the story the entire time.  Once again, the bright and shinies got even better with all that happened in this issue.  The colors are really so gorgeous for this title, and they were the most brilliant they've been since launch.

As mentioned before, this series is pushing forward so fast with so much going on, I can't see how it would deserve to end with just a mini series.  Not only that, but I still personally would love to see it go past the short run planned regardless.  With only these few books guaranteed, get on it now, especially if the series does come back later on regularly.

Rocket Salvage 2

I'm always eager to enjoy a new sci-fi adventure.  There are so many avenues they can go down, and it's neat to see what new story can be brought to the genre.  The initial issue of Rocket Salvage had me interested enough to anticipate the second and did not disappoint.

After a quick departure into an adventure through space, Primo and his kids continue to find themselves in sticky situations.  Between being chased by the Republic, learning of the truth about their "family" and the big reveal of the secret weapon, there's no shortage of drama.  Fortunately, there's still plenty of fun mixed in throughout to keep it light.

This second issue continues to shine with all the action and sci-fi shininess in all the artwork.  Now two books in, you really pick up on just how bright and vibrant all the illustrations are.  For some reason this book also had me really appreciating all the character designs.  They didn't change, but I guess reading more just helped me grow more fond of them.

Even though this is just a planned mini-series, I think I'd probably like to see more of it later.  A great sci-fi story with mystery and humor all rolled into one, this is a good series everyone can get into.  I'd certainly suggest this book and is well worth being on your pull list.

Rocket Salvage 1

Primo Rocket used to be the fastest speeder in the galaxy, but after a crash that sealed the fate of his space home, Rio Rojo, Primo has resigned himself to life as a lowly spaceship salvage yard owner. However, his two "kids" clone Beta, and Beta's genius girl Zeta seem to keep out of trouble. When the dysfunctional family suddenly becomes the target of an intergalactic manhunt, the family has to come together to save their home.

Like most of us find out, things that haunt us from our past typically end up catching up to us sooner or later.  Just such an unfortunate fact appears to be the foundation for this new high speed space adventure.  With everything from clones to speeder races, the adventure never seems to slow down in the launch issue of Rocket Salvage.  I really need to stop using so many puns..

Trying to live a quite life after a tragic incident left him blacklisted, Primo and his children do what they can to get by.  No matter how innocent their lives seem now, trouble once again comes knocking on their door.  When rumors start flying around that somehow point to the family, a close call forces them out of Dodge in search of some answers.

With plenty of action and adventure written in this first issue, the counterpart in the artwork had its work cut out to keep up.  Fortunately, every breakneck scene and sci-fi flashy frame was done exceptionally.  Sometimes you can get a little lost in all the craziness and explosions, but that was definitely not a problem here.

So far, this seems like it could be a really good miniseries to get into.  With a typical twist cliffhanger urging you to read on, I am definitely curious to see what happens next.  I think this has great potential to be a great little space adventure and is one I think worth starting up.
