Wonderland 34

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Calie and Dark Cheshire enter the mountains of Rime and Rune in search for the Antipathies, a powerful trio that must be cured of their madness. After finding and healing them, they lead Calie to the Well of Dreams. Meanwhile, a mysterious Realm Knight named the Squire fends off an incorporeal evil called Terror, who infects the dreams of Wonderland's denizens. But how long can she stop this dark force without the White Queen's help?

In this issue of Wonderland, Calie Liddle has cured the Antipathies of their madness. They lead her to the Well of Dreams to gain valuable insight. Meanwhile, The Squire is facing against a powerful force of evil known only as Terror. There are dark forces at work in this land of wonder, and Calie seeks to stop them with some help from her friends.

This is a very confusing story, with many strange names and locals that need to be constantly explained to the audience. In comics, less is more, and you can show without telling. Unfortunately Wonderland tends to tell, and it tells often and relentlessly. Countless paragraphs of needless exposition block the fantastic art, describing things to an unnecessary and frankly confusing degree. The art is incredible though, Manuel Preitano has a fantastic eye for character design.

The character Terror strikes me as especially awesome, with his mouths for eyes and ethereal slobber. Terror talks way too much though, stating over and over exactly how bad he is and how he can’t be stopped. This is a prevalent issue among the dialog. There are many well drawn splash pages hindered by needless monologue and description of things that are already on the page. Furthermore, the tone of the dialog is very inconsistent, shifting between vague poise of “what means to dream” to F-bombs and descriptions of graphic violence.

Besides this, however, Wonderland is a good book. There’s a lot of information to take in, however, and as a new reader of the series and the Grimm Fairy Tales I had to read it several times. If you’re a fan of this universe, this is another solid chapter. But if you’re just tuning in, I recommend starting at the beginning. Wonderland 33

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

A new terror rises in Wonderland, and it has already succeeded in bringing out the madness within Violet. But with her daughter now under the tutelage of Sela Mathers, a powerful ally, Calie returns to Wonderland with her ties to Earth now severed, and another threat to deal with.

The house is gone and with it, so many memories, both good and bad.  Calie finally feels a small sense of relief with one less thing to worry about, however something else is at works in Wonderland.  Now Calie seeks out the Antipathies, sensing that something is amiss with them and hoping to quell any new evils that might seep out into Wonderland.  If she only knew of the plot underway at the Rime and Reason Tavern.

The main qualm I have with this issue is that it assumes you’ve read the latest issue of Grimm Fairy Tales before this one hit the stands.  I mean, issue 37 was a story about the Cheshire Cat and now all of a sudden Calie is on a quest to find these Antipathies for reasons unknown.  Was it a vision?  Did someone tell her to go find them?  Nothing is really explained and there wasn’t any indication of a need to make this trek in past issues, so why?  I felt a little left out of the loop until I finally figure out that something must have happened in the other series that warranted her quest.  Cross-overs are all well and good, but like many from the past, a little re-canting of events from other involved series goes a long way.  While Calie was scaling the mountain with Cheshire, she could have been commenting on why she was there in the first place.  Let the readers catch up a bit before throwing them into a new adventure.  Aside from all of that, Manuel Preitano did a great job with the artwork and kept everything looking smooth.  It’s great to see the same artist working on an issue throughout for a change.

So, if you haven’t figured it out by now, go check out the latest issue of Grimm Fairy Tales before picking this one up. You’ll get a little more insight into the whole of the story and things will probably make a lot more sense. I definitely recommend grabbing this book for collection’s sake, but also as a good jumping on point for new readers. White Queen 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 2:00 PM

Though Calie remains the White Queen of what’s left of Wonderland, she must follow the Dark Queen’s orders. But her latest task proves too distasteful and Calie refuses to kill innocent people. When the Trickster tattles, the Dark Queen leaves Calie with one last chance to prove her allegiance and keep her daughter alive.

So, Calie’s pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place right now.  It’s the choice between sacrificing her daughter, or sacrificing her soul.  However, she gets the idea to dredge up the past in hopes of finding a way to stop the Dark Queen in her tracks.  What she finds though are the answers that she’s known all along, thanks to an enemy long past.  Now it’s up to Calie to act upon her newfound knowledge in order to save her daughter.

A good mid-way of a trilogy, but not a great one.  With this mini-series showing how Calie faired through the whole Age of Darkness event, I felt like the second issue kind of fell short of giving us, the audience a real sense of how much Calie had to endure.  The issue felt a little rushed due mainly to the abridged fight scene.  Here she is, alone except for the Cheshire Cat, against hordes of the former queens soldiers and then all of a sudden they’re both walking away, battered and bruised.  I mean, if the fight really wasn’t that important to the story, why even put it in there at all?  Maybe it was because of a time crunch or something, but I just feel like when this sort of thing is done in books, it’s just lazy.  I want to see how these characters fought their way out of their predicament, not just hear about it later.  It seems like a lot of these intermediate issues in these Zenescope series have been pretty much just filler until the next big revelation.  I guess in a sense that’s pretty much the idea, but there should at least be a bit more substance.  Despite this lackluster issue, I am looking forward to the conclusion, to see how Calie goes about saving Violet.

An essential part of the 3-issue mini-series, but not exactly its high point.  The second issue of White Queen, could have been cut in half and split between the first and third issues.  Hopefully with some of this necessary exposition out of the way, the third issue can bring on the action.  So, go pick up this second installment if nothing more than to satisfy your collection until the, hopefully, stunning conclusion releases.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

White Queen 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

The Age of Darkness descended and the four mystical realms surrounding Earth have since merged. Calie Liddle, Wonderland’s own White Queen, becomes a pawn in the Dark Queen’s ultimate plans. Though she opposes those plans, Calie must do the Dark Queen’s bidding... if she wants her daughter’s life spared.

Wonderland enters the Age of Darkness... and nothing can ever be the same!

It took them long enough to put this out.  The whole Age of Darkness event ended months ago and this series is only just now starting.  Better late than never I guess.  If you can still remember, when the Dark Queen took over things, she made sure to get Calie in her pocket, by way of Violet.  The Queen held a special locket that was essentially Violet’s life line.  So, if Calie betrayed the Queen in anyway, Violet’s life was forefeit.  This pretty much meant that the Dark Queen’s forces could freely travel through Wonderland without any hindrance from Calie, or the Realm Knights.  So, now when a group of refugees from the Earth-Realm found their way into Wonderland, it was tasked to Calie to “take care of them”.  After having fought so long to take down all of the corrupt Queens of Wonderland, she doesn’t want to follow in their footsteps of slaughtering innocents.  Unfortunately, her daughter’s life still hangs in the balance.  So now, Calie has choice: give up her morals, or give up Violet.  This is one choice she will not be making lightly.

Despite the lateness of the series, this was a good first issue.  I liked seeing the struggle Calie had to endure when the Dark Queen presented her with the ultimatum.  Well, I guess I wouldn’t say that liked seeing Calie suffer, but the scenario was well-written.  Like I said above, she’s been striving to not walk the same path as the four previous Queens, yet at the same time she’d never sacrifice her daughter for anything.  Either way Calie loses and she knows there’s nothing she can do about it.  So now I’m really looking forward to how she gets out of this bind in the upcoming issues.  I’m sure it’ll be quite violent and Calie will probably lose a part of herself because of it, but in the end she’ll become all the stronger for it.

The Age of Darkness has come and gone, but there’s still one tale to tell. How did Calie survive the Dark Queen’s wrath with all of her loved ones still intact? Pick up the first issue of White Queen to find out. I highly recommend this for all of you Wonderland fans out there. Wonderland 31

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 9:00 AM

Last year, Violet became the new Mad Hatter of Wonderland. Because of her already considerable control over her power, she was able to suppress the madness within and maintain her sanity. But what happens when a girl whose destiny lies in Wonderland attempts to live a normal life on Earth?

Although, this issue is just coming out now, Wonderland number thirty one acts as a precursor to the events of Grimm Fairy Tales number one hundred one.  Violet is pretty much on her own at this point, what with Calie being the new White Queen of Wonderland and all, so she’s making do with what’s at hand.  Although relatively tame now, Violet knows that there are still some aspects of Wonderland out to get her.  It also doesn’t help matters any that the essence of the Mad Hatter now resides within her, constantly haunting her dreams and leading to many a sleepless night.  Feeling like she’s close to a nervous break, Violet ventures off to Wonderland in order to seek out the guidance of her mother, but thinks twice when she sees the burden Calie has taken on.  Now with no one else to turn to, Violet decides to take on her troubles head on.  She’s done it before, what’s one more bout with Wonderland?

I enjoyed this issue.  It was a nice look at what Violet’s been up to since Calie became queen.  Erica J. Heflin did a great job of getting Violet through her mundane life without her mother, while slowly bringing her to her breaking point.  I’ve always liked Violet as a character and enjoyed watching her grow into the young woman she is now.  She’s strong and independent and isn’t afraid to let out the crazy if the circumstances call for it.  Now, however, for first time in her life she’s feeling completely isolated with no friends to turn to and not wanting to burden her mother with any extra concerns, Violet feels as though she must confront these new demons on her own.  I liked seeing her struggle with the everyday things, just trying to make an existence for herself.  So, when the madness from having the powers of the Hatter start to interfere with Violet’s basic sense of being, we get to see what she’s truly made of and how well she handles this kind of situation on her own.  Although a little late coming, this issue is a great segway into the start of the new Grimm Fairy Tales story arc after the events of Age of Darkness.

The Wonderland series continues to grow and evolve as Violet’s story within the series comes to a close for now.  This is a great read and a good send-off for the daughter of the White Queen.  Even if you’re not a follower of the Wonderland series, pick this one up to see how Violet ended up at Sela’s new school.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland 28

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

A little girl is missing in Wonderland and and it’s the White Queen’s duty to find her. Calie, Dark Cheshire, and the White Rabbit trek deep into the treacherous woods of Wonderland, unaware they are being watched.  Meanwhile, back on Earth, an evil tainted by Wonderland grows more and more powerful.

In this issue we find Calie, along with the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit, still out looking for the lost little girl.  However, what they find isn’t a little girl, but a wild-looking, young boy with no great desire to cooperate with Calie.  As the boy runs off, Calie’s concern returns to the savage stalking about throughout the jungle and the safety of the girl they have yet to find.  Calie hasn’t been Queen of Wonderland for very long and already she has more problems than she can handle.  With the growing threat of this savage, the daily concerns of Wonderland and a new evil brewing on Earth, she certainly has her hands full.

The thing I took away from this issue wasn't a like or dislike of anything in particular, but a theme I sensed throughout.  The biggest focus was that of the paternal instinct.  We see it in Calie as she tries to relate to the boy about her own daughter and we see the darker side of it with the extremes the surgeon goes through to help his ailing sons.  It’s one of the strongest and most volatile instincts in nature and Erica J. Heflin has presented both ends of the spectrum for our consideration.  Calie has played the role of both daughter and mother, so it’s no surprise that this is her go to reaction when she encounters a child.  The series has continued to be a solid read and I’d recommend picking up this issue as it leads up to a brand new evil unlike anything Calie has encountered before.

With all of the terrors that still occupy the wilds of Wonderland, it’s looking less and less likely that Calie will ever find the missing little girl.  However, if history has told us anything, it’s that Calie always manages to persevere, but is she ready for what’s to come?  Grab this issue and witness the makings of a new villain to terrorize Calie.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland 27

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Now that Calie is responsible for the safety of the denizens of Wonderland, she finds herself constantly pulled back and forth between the Realm of Dreams and Earth.  However, when a little girl goes missing in a treacherous forest, Calie must venture into the unknown with Cheshire and the White Rabbit. But little does she know, an even greater evil from Wonderland has found its way back to Earth…

With original series creator Raven Gregory stepping down, Erica J. Heflin now takes over writing duty for Zenescope’s longest running spin-off series.  Calie, who is now the White Queen of Wonderland has set out in search of a missing girl.  She finds herself wandering through the forest with the aid of the White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat and is soon attacked by an amalgamation of a creature, with parts from both man and beast.  Calie is more confident than ever now that she’s the only true authority in Wonderland.  With all of the power she’s now obtained, she just wants to set things right so that the horrors of Wonderland never plagued anyone ever again.  Looking into a case such as this one is exactly the kind of thing Calie is hoping to resolve.  Wonderland has been left unchecked for too long and it’s now time to end the nightmares.

With this being her third outing into the series, Erica is creating a nice flow and is doing a great job showing Calie adjusting to her new title.  The Rabbit and Cheshire are now acting as Calie’s advisors, enemies who have now become allies, and it’s interesting to see the pointers they expunge.  Although their advice may not be the most prudent, it’s always with the Queen’s best interests in mind.  I like seeing how these former adversaries execute their precautions for “Queen and country”.  I’m also really enjoying the artwork by Vincenzo Riccardi.  His style is nicely detailed and is reminiscent of a well drawn animation, maybe even more in the vein of anime.  One thing of note is that it just didn't feel like a lot happened in this issue.  I mean, it was pretty much just a setup to introduce the new enemy in Wonderland for Calie to fight.  It also felt a bit short, probably because there was a lot of exposition pertaining to the new villain and what the Rabbit was doing while Calie and the Cheshire fought off the cobbled together creature.  Don’t get me wrong, I did really enjoy the issue, but to me, it strayed a bit into the “filler issue” category.

My overall impressions are that for fans of the Wonderland series this is one not to be missed.  You get to see some new evil a-brewing and yet another fight scene with Calie kicking ass and looking good doing it.  Not a great jumping on point, but it’s got enough quality to sway any new reader to the series as a whole.  So, go out and grab your copy before their lost in the woods as well.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland: Asylum 5

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

In the face of Violet’s resistance, the Void realizes his only hope for marriage is to trick her. But his success comes to a halt when the Madder Hatter shows up and goes on a murderous rampage. The Void quickly promises all Liddle members safety from Wonderland if Violet truly accepts him, to which she agrees. Their union opens a gateway between Wonderland and Earth, but just what does Lory plan to do with her new Wonderland subjects? The final issue of Wonderland: Asylum begins now.

The deed is done!  Violet has “accepted” The Void (you know what I mean) and now the power of the Hatter is hers, which doesn’t end so well for the Madder Hatter.  Violet can finally make a difference in Wonderland and start dispelling all of the evils that have corrupted this former place of dreams.  However, that’s going to be easier said than done, especially when an unexpected “ally” shows up, flanked by a new set of Wonderland monstrosities.  This newcomer to the party completely screws up The Void’s plans, which leaves him with very few options.  Violet, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about either one of them and decides to take matters into her own hands and has that whole idea pretty much blow up in her face.  Fortunately she’s able to make her way out of The Void’s stronghold before things got too hot to handle.  Although, I thought she had this immense power now, so why is she making a narrow escape?  It seems like these powers aren’t all that The Void made them out to be.  Not a lot is really known about the abilities of the Hatter, except that it’s driven the previous wielders insane.  So, now that Violet is in possession of these powers, she only has to keep herself in check, or else succumb to them like all of the rest.  Only time will tell what fate awaits the newest Hatter.

Now we get to the good stuff, although the finale usually is the most action-packed part of a series, that doesn’t make it any less entertaining.  Violet has the power now, and she isn’t taking crap from anyone.  She’s no longer afraid of what lies within Wonderland because she’s now become a part of it and that means there’s no stopping her from putting an end to the horrors of this realm.  This is what I really enjoyed about this issue, seeing Violet finally able to just really let loose.  No fear or worry about the consequences, she’s what needs to be done and just goes for it.  A good example is when the band of monsters show up after her and The Void had consummated.  As The Void and the leader of the gruesome group bicker between themselves, Violet just conjures up a sword and sets to hacking off one of the creature’s arms.  No hesitation whatsoever, she sees an enemy and they’re getting cut, or stabbed, or smashed, or anything that’s needed to get the job done.  Violet is a force to be reckoned with now and with her newfound abilities, there isn’t much that can stop her.  I found the overall issue to be a great piece of work.  It had hot bedroom action, scandalous revelations, argumentative yelling and fire, all rolled up into one nice little package for your reading pleasure.

With Violet now in possession of the power of the Hatter, the only thing left to do is to find her mother and then start cleaning up the chaotic nightmare of Wonderland.  It’s a big job, but it’s nothing Violet can’t handle, especially with all of these turn coats running around.  So, head out to your nearest store and snag a copy of the final installment of Wonderland: Asylum, Pat would really appreciate it.  For more info on where to find this issue, please visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland: Asylum 4

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Locked away with no one to turn to, Violet begins to believe that all hope really is lost, until a strange group of birds show up and provide her with a means to reach out to unknown ally.  The birds arrive too late however, and Violet is lead away to prepare for her pending nuptials.  Will help arrive before she ties the knot, or will she accept her place beside The Void and obtain the means to put an end to Wonderland?  Find out in the penultimate chapter of Wonderland: Asylum.

It’s the wedding of the century as Violet and The Void walk down the aisle.  Can’t really say it’s a mutual consensus, but that’s Wonderland for ya.  Now, I’m not sure if The Void is too cocky, or too lovestruck to see that this whole situation probably won’t end well for him.  I mean, Violet despises him and yet he’s willing to grant her an immense amount of power if she accepts him?  I don’t know, I feel like there’s a fine print to these powers that The Void isn’t telling her and that’s why he’s so willing to bestow them upon her.  What’s to stop Violet from turning on him after she gets them?  The power of the Mad Hatter has done a number on everyone else who’s obtained it, so what’s to say it won’t change her as well?  Sure enough, as The Void tricks Violet into marrying him, the Madder Hatter shows up with a trail of bodies in her wake.  Here is the prime example of the power gone wrong.  Once a proud police detective, now a psychopathic killer, the Madder Hatter will now stop at nothing to take out her rival for the hat.  She has followed Violet everywhere she’s gone and now the time has finally come to decide the rightful heir to the power.  Remember though, this is still Wonderland, so things aren’t ever as they seem.  As much as they’d like to think otherwise, The Void is still in control of the situation.

A few important things happened in this issue, most that are better left to be discussed in the next review, however there is one thing I’d like to touch upon for this book and that’s that the Keepers are the ones who brought about Wonderland, or more specifically The Void, in the first place.  From what I’ve seen in all of the other Zenescope series, it seems like the Keepers are pretty much the root of all of the problems, The Being and The Void are two prime examples.  And the best part is, the Keepers just don’t seem to care that much about what they’ve wrought.  These two immensely powerful entities have been left unchecked for years and it’s pretty much up to the ones that they’ve been terrorizing to put a stop to them.  Left alone in the world of Wonderland, The Void began to dream and create, at first making things simply out of the ordinary, but not all of his dreams had turned out so well and began mutating into the grotesque nightmares that have plagued the Liddle family their whole lives.  If only these Keepers had paid more attention to their creations, a lot of pain and suffering could have been avoided.  This isn’t something that I found truly enjoyable, in fact I’m finding myself feeling the same as the last issue, but I felt like it was important enough to say something.

The Void and Violet are now husband and wife and their witness couldn’t have objected more.  The Madder Hatter has Violet by the throat, but she may have lost this round before it even began.  This isn’t a true “Red Wedding”, but it’s just about as violent.  So, pick up your copy now while The Void still permits it.  For more info on where to find this issue, please visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Grimm Fairy Tales vs Wonderland

Posted by Katie on 3:54 PM

“For years, Zenescope readers have had the chance to follow Sela Mathers in Grimm Fairy Tales and beyond as she's battled alongside and against the likes of Robyn Hood, Hesling, Red Riding Hood, and many, many more. The readers have followed Calie as she struggled to save her daughter, her sanity, and her life across two worlds in various Wonderland books. But the readers have never gotten to see Sela and Calie together. That's what makes GFT vs. Wonderland special. You have two great characters at the peak of their powers crossing paths. Will they be friends? Will they be bitter enemies? And what on Earth or Wonderland could possibly threaten them both? It's an event, and you should be there.”
- Troy Brownfield, writer

“When I read Troy's script, I envision Sela and Calie two strong warriors that are determined, beautiful, and independent. It’s like having two Wonder Womans in one book!”

Wonderland: Asylum 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

After escaping into Wonderland, Violet finds herself face-to-face with a being known as The Void.  He claims he’s here to help Violet, but she knows better than to trust anything from Wonderland.  However, with the Madder Hatter hot on her trail, Violet may need to go against every instinct and accept a helping hand from The Void.  Pat Shand continues Violet’s tale of trials and tribulations in this latest chapter of Wonderland: Asylum.

The Void has it bad, and he has it bad for Violet.  He’s completely infatuated with her and she wants nothing to do with it.  I mean, this is the essence of Wonderland for crying out loud!  This is the cause of all of the nightmares and horrors that have plagued Violet’s family for generations.  And now, all it wants to do is get down and dirty with her.  In fact, the Void claims that they were destined to be together, which Violet isn’t buying one bit.  He may talk a big game, but she knows better than to trust anything even remotely related to Wonderland.  The Void sweeps her up, regardless of how she feels about him, and takes her on a journey of revelation, a journey that reveals new aspects of the Liddle family’s altercations in Wonderland.  Everything was by The Void’s design, all so he could find that perfect piece to help him realize his true vision for Wonderland.  The Liddle family has been nothing but playthings for him.  Everything that has happened throughout the Wonderland series has all been a result of The Void having his fun.  Now with the puppetmaster in her sights, it’s Violet’s time to shine.

This issue metes out the heart of the series and ties everything together and I think that’s what I like best about this issue.  After all of this time and going on this crazy roadtrip, we’re finally seeing what’s all been about and all wrapped up in one issue.  No more dragging out plot points, this is the whole enchilada, so to speak.  I’ve read some series in the past where the cusp of the story is prolonged over several issues, which can be exciting at times, but then again it can get a bit tedious too.  Sometimes, you just want it all summed up for you so you don’t have to wait a whole month for yet another tidbit of information.  However, as result of all of these revelations, I can’t really go into too much detail as to what happens, through fear of revealing any surprises.  It is well worth the read, trust me on this one.  Now that the point of it all has been brought to the surface, we can sit back and enjoy the antics of Violet as she tries to make her way out of Wonderland and away from The Void and the Madder Hatter.  The series can only get better from here and I for one am really looking forward to how this pans out.

All has been revealed now, as The Void attempts to woo Violet to his side.  Little does she know however, that as she resists his advances, Wonderland’s dark forces are at work recruiting more lost souls to fill its empty roles.  Everything is falling into place as Violet continues her journey through the dangers of Wonderland.  So, be sure to snag a copy of the latest chapter of the Wonderland: Asylum saga.  Consider yourself committed if you don’t.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland: Asylum 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

During a skirmish with the Madder Hatter and the Dark Cheshire Cat, Violet flees through the looking glass.  Now she finds herself in Wonderland, the very place her mother had been running from for so long.  It turns out, however, that Violet is not alone.  Who is this mysterious new stranger and are they friend or foe?  Find out in the thrilling new mini-series from the creative mind of Pat Shand, Wonderland: Asylum.  There is no escape from the madness.

The time has come for Violet to experience the horrors of Wonderland first-hand.  All her life, she’s heard her mother tell stories about this place, all of the horrors Calie endured while trapped in here and everything that had followed her out.  It is a place of pure evil and no one should ever have to witness what goes on in there.  Unfortunately, Violet found herself caught between a rock and a hard place and chose the lesser of two evils at the time.  Down Violet goes, down the rabbit hole, reliving the tragedy that is the Liddle family.  Now she’s in a world unknown to her, with a lurking terror her only companion.  The time has come for Violet to show off her newfound abilities and begin her trial in Wonderland.  Will she succeed, or succumb to the darkness?  Meanwhile, in an insane asylum on Earth, the evil of Wonderland has begun recruiting new madmen to fill the void that Calie had left from her previous run-through.  It seems like, no matter Calie and Violet do, Wonderland finds a way to seep into the dark recesses of the Earth realm.  It may be up to Violet to finally put an end to the terror that is Wonderland.

Now it’s really time for Violet to shine.  She’s lived her life in fear of Wonderland, but now she’s ready to take it on full-force.  This series is about Violet and how she deals with being on her own against all of the horrors her mother had been telling her about and that’s what I like about this issue and what’s to come with this series.  The Wonderland series as a whole has always centered around Alice and Calie, primarily Calie though, so now we get to see what the new generation brings to the table.  Violet’s upbringing was different than Calie’s.  She didn’t have the mother with psychological issues and suicidal tendencies, she didn’t have the adulterous father, or sadistic younger brother.  All Violet had was Calie and their eventual nomadic existence.  Sure, there was the constant threat of some monstrosity from a hell dimension slaughtering them at moment’s notice, but they had each other.  Calie was there for Violet, protected her, and taught her everything she knew about how to survive Wonderland.  Violet’s on her own now and with Pat’s great track record of writing badass women, Violet is going to be a force to be reckoned with.  This is just a great issue that sets us off on Violet’s path toward awesomeness.

I honestly couldn’t find anything that I didn’t like.  The artwork was a little iffy, but it works out with the disorder and chaos of Violet’s time in Wonderland.  I’m looking forward to what’s to come and to see how Violet grows throughout this series.  Pat has yet to let me down, so I know it’s going to be great.

With Calie out of the picture, Violet must now venture forth into insanity itself.  There’s no telling what new horrors she will have to face, but she’s been preparing for this for as long as she can remember.  It’s time Violet experience what her whole family has, so she knows how best to stop it.  So, pick up Wonderland: Asylum 1 and watch the newest generation of Liddle gives Wonderland a run for its money.  You’d be crazy to miss this one.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland #11

Posted by Katie on 10:04 AM

Calie and Violet find themselves still on the run from Wonderland giving up any attempts at living a normal existence. They try to stay one step ahead of its reach but even as their life on the road continues, beings from the sinister realm spread their evil influence across the Midwestern land. Elsewhere a middle age traveling salesman obsessed with being the best of the best will find that in the world of Wonderland insanity is on sale and all roads lead to madness. And what dark secret does he hold that will give birth to an all new denizen of Wonderland? Find out here in this not to be missed issue!

And the crazies just keep piling in.  Calie and Violet have hit the road again, hoping to find some sort of salvation from all of the horrors Wonderland has thrown at them.  Violet now fully understands how evil Wonderland is and in turn isn’t apt to be as reckless as she used to be.  Not only is this for her own safety, but to protect Calie as well.  Essentially, they’ve come to an understanding to watch each other’s backs.  However, for the sake of putting some distance between them and their last run in with Wonderland, they’ve decided to entrust their well-being to a total stranger.  Going off of the norm, this was probably one of the few cases where the hitchhikers needed to be wary of who they got a ride from.  The open road used to be a place where you could kick-back and enjoy the ride, now it’s become a stretch of distrust and wariness.  Calie and Violet need to keep their wits about them if they’re going to make their trip in one piece.

I find myself drawn to this new character Lory, who was kind enough to give Violet and Calie a lift.  It’s rare that you find someone so nonchalant while picking up hitchhikers, which makes one wonder if there is something more to Lory than meets the eye.  I mean, even Calie’s warning voice in her head didn’t go off, so maybe Lory is just a really trusting person, looking to help out someone in need.  She seems like just your average, care-free girl out for a drive, except for her game-changing secret that’s revealed at the end of the issue.  Now this is one real doozy and definitely not what I was expecting.  So, suffice to say Lory has my undivided attention now and I’m really looking forward to seeing how she factors in later on in the series.

No problems for me from this issue.  The writing is outstanding as usual and there was only one artist doing interiors.  I would say that’s a win  right there.  Even the creepster Gus isn’t enough to turn me off of this book.  It’s a very nice story that fits in great as Calie and Violet make their transition to wherever they may end up.  In the end though, it doesn’t matter where they go because it seems like Wonderland always manages to find them.

So, the Liddle girls are on the road again, I think there’s a song in there somewhere.  In this day and age, you never know who you’ll meet out on the highways.  So,  as long as Calie’s “Wonder sense” (that’s what I’m calling her little warning voice), keeps them out of trouble, these two girls shouldn’t have any problems.  And here’s something I just thought of, you can’t tell me not a single guy stopped and offered these two gorgeous girls a ride?  I somehow find that hard to believe, unless they hadn’t been on the road for very.  In any case, another recommended read right here.  So, go out and grab this book, even if you have to hitch hike to the store, it’s worth it.  For more info on where to pick up this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Madness of Wonderland #4

Posted by Katie on 3:00 PM

The madness stops here, or at least that’s what Emma Legrasse is hoping for as she closes in on the suspect behind the murders.  With her girlfriend’s life on the line, she will stop at nothing to bring this person in and put an end to the violence.  However, the killer may not be who she thinks.  Read the final installment to the Madness of Wonderland mini-series that will leave you crazed for more.

So, now Madness of Wonderland comes to a close.  The killer has been revealed (which I won’t give out here) and the legacy of the Mad Hatter lives on.  It’s been a wild ride and Emma just wants it to stop, for her girlfriend’s sake as well as for anyone else this murderer might lay claim to.  But, what is Danko’s involvement in all of this and why did he take Shelly?  As luck would have it, Emma tracks him down to the very site where Hall and Lovecraft discovered the caves with all of the strange writing.  A final showdown is at hand where they finally air-out their dirty laundry and their connection with Johnny Liddle is finally unveiled.  There were so many twists and turns in this issue that “madness” is an apt title for this series.  However, that’s what makes a good psychological thriller.  You don’t really know where the story is taking you and in the end the big reveal finally pays off.  All throughout the series you had little glimpses of the Mad Hatter and you’re told that Emma witnessed her whole family killed while being held captive when she was a kid, so when it’s shown that Johnny was there back during Emma’s imprisonment it gets you thinking of how it may have effected Johnny down the line.  Did his involvement play a role in him becoming the Mad Hatter?  That’s something for the reader to speculate on and it’s things like that, that make the story that much more enjoyable for me.

So, let’s continue on that thought of the continuity tie-ins.  When you’ve got an ever expanding universe of characters and locations, one can start to lose track and get lost in the myriad of stories that come about from all of that.  However, when a writer throws in a bit of back story that places characters at a specific event, you can develop a timeline of the universe and then try to figure out, unless you’re specifically told, how these characters or events influenced the next in line.  So, like I said, did Johnny’s involvement influence his actions down the road?  Now the fun part is going back through the series that started it all and try and place when that happened.  Not sure if Raven had this planned out way back then, but it would be some awesome foresight into an already amazing universe.  Kudos to Dan Wickline for executing this so wonderfully.  I feel like a read through the earlier series is now in order.

Now, my thoughts on what I didn’t like about this issue were simply that I thought the big reveal as to who the killer was at the end was a bit obvious.  I don’t know, I feel like they could have thrown you completely, but decided on the familiar path so-to-speak.  This is still worth the read though, so don’t let that deter you from a great issue.

Emma Legrasse has finally confronted the killer and prevented any more deaths, but where will she go from here?  Only time will tell what Wonderland has in store for Emma, but one thing you can be sure of is that it won’t be pleasant.  So, be sure to pick up this issue from your local comic shop or wherever you get your Zenescope needs.  This is not one to be missed as I’m sure the repercussions from this book will be playing out in series to come.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland #10

Posted by Katie on 5:00 AM

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Alice who was sacrificed to a realm of madness and insanity. But what if that sacrifice had never happened? When a familiar face from the future journeys back to that fateful day to prevent that very thing from coming to pass the resulting chaos and turmoil may very well rip the reality of two worlds asunder. What if...Alice had never journeyed to Wonderland? Featuring the long awaited return of...THE NEW CHESHIRE CAT!

Holy time warp Batman!  Looks like Violet is breaking the number one rule of time travel and that’s to never try to change the past.  Somewhere down the line Violet has become the new Mad Hatter, but it looks as though she’s gotten control over the dark urges that come with the hat.  How she’s done this is still unknown to us, but I’m sure that will all be revealed as the series moves on.  She’s also being aided by the Cheshire Cat, another anomaly to be discovered later.  All she wants is to try and make things right for her mother, Calie, but unforeseen consequences just makes things worse.  Her meddling definitely changed something, but not for the better.  So now here’s Violet caught in a bit of a quandary.  How does she make things right without messing up the future even more?

I really enjoyed the whole what if, time jumping story line in this issue.  It’s cool to see how Calie could have turned out if Alice had never been dropped into Wonderland when she was a little girl.  I like seeing Violet taking center stage now and really owning up to her…heritage, I guess you could say.  I honestly can’t wait to see Violet’s transformation into the confident and rather powerful young woman as shown in this issue.  I mean seriously, if she’s able to control the Mad Hatter’s hat as well as the Cheshire Cat (yes, I know that rhymed) then she’s gotta be quite the powerhouse.

Art will always be a key factor when I read through any comic.  And although the writing was spot-on and the pencils were slick, it’s the coloring that I have a problem with.  Throughout the first three quarters of the book, the colors really gave Francesco’s lines some real depth and character, but then in the latter quarter, the colors just get kind of flat.  When I see something like this, I read it as a transition in time or place.  That wasn’t the case however, and it just threw me off a bit while I was reading it.  So, like I’ve said several times in past reviews, I’m sure there’s a good explanation for the change, but it’s always going to be something I look for.

As Violet has learned, time is an ever-changing phenomena.  One small tweak and you could wind up accidentally killing yourself.  So, even if you have a DeLorean, or a police phone box sitting around, it’s probably better just to leave them be.  However, don’t wait too long to grab this issue or may just need that time machine to make sure you snag yourself a copy.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Madness of Wonderland #2 & #3

Posted by Katie on 12:30 AM

Warning: There may be spoilers ahead! Read at your own risk!

As the investigation of the bizarre murder continues, agents connected to the case keep winding up dead.  Now Detective Legrasse must delve even deeper into Lovecraft’s journal in order to put this case to rest.  However, a spectre from her past begins to haunt her and a man thought dead leaves signs of his return.  The madness continues in these next two installments of the new Wonderland spin-off by Dan Wickline.

So, I think it’s safe to say that you never want to get involved with anything even remotely related to the Liddle family.  Something Emma Legrasse is finding out all too quickly as other agents investigating the murder case that started all of the current craziness, begin to get picked off one-by-one.  Not only that, but she keeps reliving her traumatizing past, bringing up old emotions and pain that would not deem a normal police officer fit for active duty.  Somehow, Emma has been able to suppress all of those feelings throughout her life and only now having them well up during this strange investigation.  Obviously a strong willed girl, otherwise she would’ve lost it a long time ago having to deal with so many murders for all these years.

The one big mystery though is how Lovecraft’s journal ties into all of this exactly.  Sure, the markings on the victim might have something to do with it, but if Legrasse is the only one that has the journal, who else would know about it?  Question upon question piles up across these issues, which will hopefully be answered by the conclusion to this mini-series with the next issue.  This is looking to be something great.

Dan Wickline is putting together quite the wonderful mystery here.  What with a quick appearance by a character we all thought dead and little hints divulged from Lovecraft’s journal, it’s certainly shaping into a series I just can’t put down.  It even has me trying to figure who this mystery killer is.  Each issue has me thinking I’ve finally figured it out and then something else surfaces that debunks my theory.  Good mysteries are hard to come by these days, at least ones that really get me thinking, so for the fact that I have no clue who’s killing everyone, I’m really looking forward to the last issue.

Now, my only beef I had to do with issue three.  The art just fell short in my opinion.  It seemed flat and unemotive compared to Reine Rosenberg’s work on the second issue.  I mean when you compare the agent getting killed in issue two to the one in issue three, you just don’t get the sense that Agent Anders is feeling her life slip away as much as Nicole the medical examiner did.  Oscar
Celestini did great with the Lovecraft flashback shots in both issues, but I just didn’t feel it with Puste.

So, now this series is starting to wind down, but not before a few more wrenches are thrown into the works.  I can’t say enough how much I’m enjoying Mr. Wickline’s work on this series and really can’t wait for the big reveal.  If that’s not motivation enough to go grab these two issues then you must be mad!  Believe me when I say, Madness of Wonderland does not disappoint.  For more info on where to find these issues, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland #9

Posted by Katie on 5:00 AM

The seeds of evil are all around them and it’s up to the Liddle girls to uproot the problem.

After sneaking out of the hotel room, Violet and her new friend Harmony have become the latest victims of Club Excess.  When Calie wakes to find the girls missing, she can only fear the worst and arrives at the club prepared, but not entirely for what she finds there.  Writer Raven Gregory continues his thrilling tale of a young woman just trying to find some sanity in the crazy world she lives in.

So, it looks like Violet has gotten herself into quite the thorny situation here.  Not only is she in trouble with her mother, but now she’s fallen into the clutches of the Flower Girls.  Now, it’s up to Calie to bail her out.  Meanwhile, the Red Queen is having problems of her own with the Queen of Spades, while trying to get her son back to the real world.  It’s a true fight to the finish as these mothers face the daunting task of keeping their children safe from the evils of Wonderland.  However, the children take matters into their own hands, proving they’re not as helpless as one might expect.

Throughout the series, Violet has been constantly sheltered by Calie.  They’ve traveled all over the country, trying to stay inconspicuous in hopes of evading the threat of Wonderland, but with this ninth issue that’s all changed.  Now, we get to see Violet in action.  Anyone who’s read any of the previous installments in the Wonderland saga knows how much of a badass Calie is.  This time around it’s Violet’s time to shine, picking up where her mother and grandmother left off and conquering the demons that came from the nightmare beyond the mirror. I've always been a big fan of the Liddle girls, so it’s great to see Violet in action now.  Three generations of ass-kicking women, I say bravo Mr. Gregory.

The only thing that I didn’t like was the one thing that always bothers me in comics, consistency with the art.  In this case it wasn’t so much that there were two different artists on this issue, but that the look of one of the characters kept changing throughout the story.  The Queen of Spades, who’s been known to wear fishnets, starts off wearing white stockings and then goes bare-legged half way through her story.  I could just be nit-picking at this point in time, but for someone who’s been with the Wonderland story from the beginning it’s one of those things that just jumps out at me.

Issue 9 of Wonderland is action-packed and really shows the tenacity and fighting spirit of the leading ladies.  With a well-seeded story, this is definitely not one to leaf behind, believe me it grows on you.  So, go check out the latest installment in the on-going Wonderland series.  It’s not one to be pruned from your collection.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenscope Facebook page.

Zenescope - Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole

Posted by Katie on 12:00 PM

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans for a new Wonderland prequel mini-series entitled Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole. The new five issue series will be penned by Wonderland writer and co-creator Raven Gregory and Zenescope’s “Robyn Hood” scribe, Pat Shand.
This new series takes readers back to the original mini-series, RETURN TO WONDERLAND, which was first published in 2007.  Zenescope’s “Down the Rabbit Hole” will fill in the blanks surrounding Calie’s first journey into the realm of madness.  This time, readers will see things from other family members’ perspectives as Calie takes her first, life-altering, journey into Wonderland.
As was announced in July 2012, Zenescope’s original Wonderland trilogy was purchased by Lionsgate TV and is being produced by Smallville’s Brian Robbins to be adapted as a live-action television series.  This new mini-series will no doubt allow for additional story-lines and appease the die-hard Wonderland fans who can now delve deeper into the rich mythology that creators Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco and Raven Gregory have been publishing for the past six years.
Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole will be available for preorder on the March edition of Diamond Previews or for preorder through Zenescope’s official web store: http://zenescope.pinnaclecart.com.
For more information, visit Zenescope’s website at www.zenescope.com or its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Zenescope.
Zenescope Entertainment was founded by Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco in 2005, and has quickly grown into one of the top comic book and graphic novel publishing companies in the world.
