Robyn Hood 11

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Robyn and Marian are going to Comic Con, no really, it’s true.  Issue number 11 of the series kicks off with Robyn and Marian having to take on a bevy of odd ball cases to keep their heads above water following a lawsuit, and of course the Cabal is still on their radar.

This issue starts with the duo interviewing a client who wants them to find a WARHAMMER which has cursed his family with among other things syphilis and boiling saliva.  The only problem is that the man has sold the cursed hammer on E-bay.  That makes sense.  First stop is the buyer, who has put it up for bid at the New York ComiCon.  But wait!  There is also a pack of werewolves looking to retrieve their mystic talisman.  Fortunately for them, it’s a comic convention, so they will blend in.  This is a delicious romp for anyone who has ever been to a comic convention.  Watching the pack members try to read the convention map was all kinds of deja vu.  Upon arriving in costume, our girls find out from the dealer that the hammer has been bought by a someone in a slave-girl Leia costume.  No problem, that narrows down their search to a few hundred people.  NO problem.

Werewolf pack in tow, Robyn and Marian catch up with the buyer, and as expected, all Hell breaks out.  It’s worth it to buy this comic, if for no other reason, to see Robyn dressed as Rosie the Riveter, beating a pack of werewolves to death with something that looks curiously like Mjolnir.  As usual, the series delivers great art, an involving ongoing story, a bit of romance, all with brightly colored breathtaking visuals.  The plot is predictably slim, but with the presentation you’ll barely notice.  The variant covers are the bomb.  Take AIM and BeWERE of MISSING the MARK on this issue.

Robyn Hood 9

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

Robyn and Marian were hired by the wealthy Ms. Rubino to lift a magical hold on her bank account, but when Marian’s spell goes awry, the account is purged. Rubino threatens legal action, but it’s the least of their problems, as Marian is pursued by an insane Avella, and Robyn makes a dodgy deal with the Rotter, a criminal looking to lift a powerful curse. Meanwhile, the mysterious Cabal prepares for a cataclysmic event known as “the Shift.”

Robyn and Marian are in the thick of it now.  With Avella on the rampage and the Cabal still at large, these ladies certainly have their hands full.  They’ve been in some dire situations before, but this one could prove to be more than one of them can handle.  As their list of enemies continues to grow, Robyn and Marian now have to prioritize lest they become completely overwhelmed.

I liked this one.  Pat Shand does it again with his superb writing style.  More suspense than past issues and things are starting to come to a head as the villains are coming into the light.  The main characters are starting to lose their grip on everyday life what with lawsuits, bills and enemies around every corner.  With all of the trouble they’ve encountered, everything is about to come crashing down upon the girls.  It’s great to see just how much pressure they can endure before it finally breaks them.  I can confidently say that this is worth the read.

The time is almost at hand for the Cabal to strike and Robyn and Marian are the only ones who can stop them.  Will they make it in time before the Shift occurs, or will an unforeseen obstacle bring their endeavors to an end?  Pick up the latest issue of Robyn Hood to find out the answers to all of these questions and more.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Robyn Hood 6

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 2:00 PM

Ever since leaving Myst, Marian’s magic hasn’t been the same. As Robyn examines her own dangerous temper, Marian seeks help from a mysterious source. All the while, the enigmatic Cabal observes from the shadows.

This issue is a more Marian focused one.  Robyn is dealing with some more personal problems after her team-up with Britney last issue.  However, Marian has some recently discovered troubles of her own.  So now, Marian seeks out guidance from a third party, too embarrassed to reveal her situation to Robyn.  What she learns though makes her question how much her magic is really worth to her.  Meanwhile, Robyn takes Britney’s advice and goes to counseling for all of the trauma she’s endured in her life.  Unfortunately, trouble just seems to follow Robyn wherever she goes when an unknown creature attacks her during her very first session.  A new threat is closing in on Robyn and Marian, and it’s only a matter of time before the girls get in too deep.

This issue was a good transition into what’s coming up in the series.  It also was a nice focus on Marian, helping to flesh out her character more.  Throughout the series she’s always been kind of the side-kick, providing support to Robyn and wrapping up all of the loose ends while Robyn does the heavy-lifting.  Now we see that Marian’s transition into the Earth realm hasn’t worked out so much in her favor.  Despite how much she’s enjoying her stay, Marian’s slowly losing her connection to Myst and in turn, her magic.  So now she’s going to have to make a choice, about whether she should stay, powerless, and aid Robyn how she can, or return to Myst and try and strengthen her control of her magic.  It’s a choice to either lose a part of herself, or lose the life where she finally feels like she belongs.  She started off as the damsel in distress, but she’s grown into a strong young woman, capable of slaying a few demons on her own.  Pat Shand has always been great with character development, and this issue is no different.  A recommended read for anyone looking to continue on the adventures of Robyn Hood and Maid Marian.

With Marian’s powers waning, will she really do what’s right, or stray from her path to hold onto that connection?  And after a rather violent session, will Robyn ever return to therapy?  Find out these answers and more in the latest issue of the on-going Robyn Hood series.  You won’t miss your mark with this one.  For more info on where to find this book, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Robyn Hood 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 9:00 AM

Robyn and Marian, now operating a small private investigation business out of their apartment, help people with non-traditional problems. That led them to Sam, the head of a roller derby team of young women who practice witchcraft. After experimenting with a dangerous mystical drug, the women were targeted by a demonic entity known as the Priest, who captures Sam in order to lure Robyn and Marian to him.

The second issue of the new on-going series, Robyn Hood delves into the modern world to deliver street-level justice with a mystical twist.  With her new partner Marian, Robyn sets out to curb the efforts of a man known as The Priest.  However, now that Robyn has him cornered, she may have bitten off more than she can chew.  Robyn has faced some powerful enemies in the past and even with her enhanced abilities, she’s having a hard time against him.  Robyn and Marian end up at a roller derby match where they confront Sam’s team about the drugs in hopes to break The Priest’s control over them.  It seems like roller derby is starting to make a rise in comics.  Between this and the Harley Quinn series, I haven’t seen the sport spotlighted as much as it has been.   Maybe it’s been featured in more books, but I’m just going on what I've been reading.

Pat has been keeping his writing talents on par with his past work and it’s fun to see Marian trying to adjust to the modern world.  I like that she gets sayings wrong like “going in guns amazing” instead of “guns a blazing”.  It’s the little things like that, that give a character a realistic persona.  I also liked seeing Robyn get worried during her fight against The Priest.  It shows that she’s not this top notch fighter who can take down anyone, that there’s a real chance she could be beaten.  An essential flaw to most characters, but always great to see nonetheless.  I really couldn't find anything I didn't like about this issue.  Like I said, Pat’s writing keeps things fresh and interesting and what’s not to love about that?  If I had any qualms at all, it would be with Marian’s hair cut, but that’s more of a personal dislike than anything.

As the second issue of the new on-going series, it holds up well to the previous installments of the overall series and adds new depth to the ever evolving characters.  Whether it be Marian’s first roller derby match, or Robyn actually trusting someone, there’s always something new to be found within this series.  So, continue on your Robyn Hood collection with issue two, the penultimate chapter in the first story arc.  Yet again, Pat Shand doesn't disappoint.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Godstorm: Hercules Payne 1 & 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Growing up in Compton, Andre Payne never had an easy life.  His father had abandoned his family before Andre was even born and with drugs and violence being a constant influence, it’s no wonder he fell in with a rough crowd.  However, during a police raid that Andre got caught up in, his half-brother Calvin gets gunned down in the line of duty.  Grief-stricken and on the run from crime boss Terrell Taylor, Andre runs into a mysterious man who reveals some life-changing secrets from Andre’s past.  Join Pat Shand as he takes you through the new series from Zenescope, Godstorm: Hercules Payne.

Andre was nothing more than a common street thug, he never really cared who got hurt, as long as the money was good.  Then enters his half-brother Calvin, who happens to be on the right side of the law and tries to set Andre straight.  Pride gets in the way of common sense and Andre finds himself in a tight spot.  It’s only when he has no one left to turn to, that a man from his past approaches him.  Apparently, Andre has a secret that’s been locked away inside of him since the day he was born and it’s only now that this man is able to help him realize it.  Andre only ever wanted to take care of his mother and with this new found power, he’ll be able to do that and more.  He doesn’t have to worry about Terrell Taylor, or any other lowlife anymore, he can finally live his own life.  However, forces greater than Taylor want Andre dead and he’ll have to rely on his abilities if he’s going to survive this ordeal.

At the core, these two issues are a story about a man trying to find his place in the world.  Abandoned by his father at birth and living in a gang fueled environment, Andre really didn’t’ know which route to take.  Should he take the hard fought path and go against the norms of his situation in order to better himself, or go down the easy way and conform to his surroundings?  Despite his inner notion of wanting to be a good person, Andre accepts his fate and gives in to the violence.  If only he had a father-figure around to guide towards a more righteous lifestyle, perhaps his half-brother would still be alive and he wouldn’t be on the run from a crimelord.  You can see Andre struggling with the situation when he thinks on Calvin’s advice and he begins to question if he should even be a part of the deal.  Andre starts to get antsy and just wants to get this over with as soon as possible.  Deep down, Andre knows that there has to be a better way, a way to go about life without having to lie to his mother and to freely mingle with whomever without having the guilty conscience looming over him.  However, because of his actions, Terrell Taylor just happened to get some video of Andre opening fire on police officers, which is more than enough dirt to shackle Andre to Taylor’s whims.  This certainly isn’t where Andre wanted to find himself and as he looks back on that fateful night, he has to be thinking to himself, “How did I get here?”

I’ve probably already said this before, but Pat Shand has a gift when it comes to writing.  I absolutely love how he was able to take a very realistic scenario and turn it into a fantastical tale of mythology.  I mean, you’d think the guy was writing from experience when he put together these two issues.  Now, I don’t mean to stereotype or anything, but the way Pat wrote this story is pretty much how I would picture the situation going down, except for the Greek god powers of course.  It felt like I was reading a movie, or something along those lines.  The characters just came alive for me and the artwork really helped convey the emotions and the overall look in a very real way.  So, props to AC Osorio for some outstanding artwork.  There wasn’t anything that I had problem with between these two issues.  If you’re looking for a great story and awesome artwork, then look no further.  These books are a great setup to what looks like a new power player in the Grimm Universe.

On the run and with no one to turn to, Andre suddenly finds out that he has the power to put a stop to all of that and that he was born to be something greater than a thug.  However, will he walk the path of the righteous with these new abilities, or seek vengeance for those who've wronged him?  So, strengthen your collection and pick up Godstorm: Hercules Payne issues 1 and 2.  It’s a sure-fire way to bolt ahead of the crowd.  For more info on where to find these books, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Godstorm: Age of Darkness One-Shot

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Ascension is over and The Being has been defeated, but at what cost?  With Zeus gone, the first family of Olympus has never been at such a loss and now his reborn son Julian is on the run as a result of his part in Ascension.  However, when an enemy he thought dead returns, Julian must sacrifice his anonymity in order to stop the threat before things get out of hand.  Godstorm: Age of Darkness is a brand new one-shot by writer Pat Shand.

Zeus has been taken down!  Despite the fact that The Being has been dealt with, Zeus just couldn’t handle what The Being was dishing out.  With his father gone, Julian is now in hiding.  Although he was working undercover, Julian had to prove himself to The Being in order to gain his trust and that meant Julian had to get his hands dirty.  He helped The Being deal out justice and wipe out any non-believers.  Naturally, this didn’t bode well with the populace, so even after he revealed that he had been trying to undermine The Being the whole time, his crimes could not be forgiven.  So now, Julian keeps a low profile and helps out those in need as inconspicuously as possible, all the while missing his father.  Essentially this is a story about loss.  The loss of a brother and the loss of a father.  A story of how a god is supposed to cope with the loss of another.  None of them thought that Zeus would fall, how could they know?  But with what transpired, the gods now have a right to be a little uneasy.  It’s Julian though, that seems to be unsure of how to process this void.  As the re-born Zagreus, one would think that there would be slaughter and bloodshed as far as the eye could see over this loss, but since Zeus uttered the words, “I believe in you”, a calm has washed over Julian.  He’s finally at peace with himself and as a result, mourns Zeus in a much more reserved manner.  He has no need to lash out anymore, because Julian knows that his father believed in him.  The repercussions of the fall of a god will be felt throughout the Grimm Universe for quite some time.

With this issue, I felt that it bridges the gap nicely between Ascension and the upcoming Godstorm mini-series.  We get to see the aftermath of the battle between Julian and The Being, but there really wasn’t a lot that happened in this issue, or at least nothing that I can freely share without any spoilers.  It’s always a pleasure to read something by Pat Shand and the interiors were pretty sharp.  However, in the end it just felt like filler until the next big event comes about.  Don’t get me wrong though, it will help to make sense of what’s to come, so don’t count this issue out.  I definitely recommend grabbing this one to continue on the Godstorm storyline.

Alone and confused, Julian must now make his way through life without the support of his father, Zeus.  But, with threats new and old, popping up will Julian be able to stem the tides of evil, or be lost in a sea of melancholy?  Find out in the new Godstorm: Age of Darkness one-shot, a good way to jolt you into the new Age of Darkness.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Hellsing 1-4

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Having faced the hordes of The Being and joining up with the Realm Knights, Liesel Van Helsing is still having trouble getting acquainted with modern living.  But, when her father’s journal mysteriously shows up at her home, Liesel is sent on a journey to uncover the truth about his disappearance.  However, will the truth finally bring her closure, or open up a whole new pain?  Helsing is the newest mini-series from writer Pat Shand that’s sure to bring you chills and thrills.

Monster hunter extraordinaire, Liesel Van Helsing prides herself on being ahead of the game.  Above all else, she’s an inventor and a builder and can readily whip up some new device or weapon for counteracting the dark hordes at a moment’s notice.  However, when a mysterious package arrives for her one evening, she isn’t exactly prepared for what she finds inside.  A relic from the past, her father’s journal, something that Liesel had thought long gone had suddenly just turned up.  Who could have sent this and why?  Liesel was eager to delve into the contents only to find that the last few pages were missing.  She was so close to finding out what had become of her father, so Liesel went on the only clue she had and made her way to Italy where things just got stranger.  No sooner does she find the shop that the journal came from, is Liesel attacked by vampires who had been awaiting her arrival.  The shop doesn’t fare so well, but she gains an ally, as well as a few more pages of the journal, in the shop’s owner Jonathan Harker.  He didn’t know much, but what he did led them to Liesel’s hometown, London.  According to Liesel, not much had changed since her time, so her and Jonathan find their way to her old home, or at least where it used to be before a school was built over top of it.  Liesel begins her search in one of the classrooms until a teacher barges, not really getting what’s going on.  So, as luck would have it Liesel is attacked yet again only this time a minion of Dracula himself has shown up to lead her to his master.  Liesel and Jonathan make the trek to Transylvania to confront the Count, only she finds more than anticipated.  Liesel has travelled long and far to find out why her father’s journal just suddenly appeared before her after all of these years.  She had a few close calls, but kept her wits about her when it really mattered.  If anything this is a story about Liesel’s self-discovery, looking to see if maybe there’s more to her than just a genius inventor.  She’s always been sure of herself, but it’s everyone else that’s kept her on guard.  Perhaps now she’ll finally learn how to let someone in.

Another great series by Pat Shand, he’s building up quite the bevy of badass beauties.  Between Robyn, Red and now Liesel, Pat sure knows how to bring these ladies to life.  However, what once was the wow factor, has become nothing more than the expected.  Before I go any further, let me just point out that this is a good series, a great one even with Liesel being just plain awesome and not taking crap from anyone.  She perseveres through thick and thin and is always quick with that dry British wit.  With that being said, I honestly couldn’t really find anything that really grabbed my attention.  Nothing made me pause while reading to say to myself, “Wow, that’s pretty cool, I gotta re-read that.”  But, maybe that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  Lately, I’ve been reviewing a lot of different series written by Pat Shand, so I’ve kind of become accustomed to his superb writing style.  Which brings me to my point where any sort of slip in his quality of writing would probably surprise me the most.  So, for any new readers just delving into this series, or any other by Pat Shand, prepare for an experience.

With the truth behind her father’s disappearance just out of her grasp, Liesel is determined to put this case to rest, once and for all.  With the forces of Dracula himself hot on her heels, will her intuitive mind be enough to save her?  The Helsing series is definitely not one to be missed, so be sure to pick up all four issues because I’m sure you’ll want a STAKE in this too.  That’s right, I went there.  For more info on where to find these issues visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland: Asylum 5

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

In the face of Violet’s resistance, the Void realizes his only hope for marriage is to trick her. But his success comes to a halt when the Madder Hatter shows up and goes on a murderous rampage. The Void quickly promises all Liddle members safety from Wonderland if Violet truly accepts him, to which she agrees. Their union opens a gateway between Wonderland and Earth, but just what does Lory plan to do with her new Wonderland subjects? The final issue of Wonderland: Asylum begins now.

The deed is done!  Violet has “accepted” The Void (you know what I mean) and now the power of the Hatter is hers, which doesn’t end so well for the Madder Hatter.  Violet can finally make a difference in Wonderland and start dispelling all of the evils that have corrupted this former place of dreams.  However, that’s going to be easier said than done, especially when an unexpected “ally” shows up, flanked by a new set of Wonderland monstrosities.  This newcomer to the party completely screws up The Void’s plans, which leaves him with very few options.  Violet, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about either one of them and decides to take matters into her own hands and has that whole idea pretty much blow up in her face.  Fortunately she’s able to make her way out of The Void’s stronghold before things got too hot to handle.  Although, I thought she had this immense power now, so why is she making a narrow escape?  It seems like these powers aren’t all that The Void made them out to be.  Not a lot is really known about the abilities of the Hatter, except that it’s driven the previous wielders insane.  So, now that Violet is in possession of these powers, she only has to keep herself in check, or else succumb to them like all of the rest.  Only time will tell what fate awaits the newest Hatter.

Now we get to the good stuff, although the finale usually is the most action-packed part of a series, that doesn’t make it any less entertaining.  Violet has the power now, and she isn’t taking crap from anyone.  She’s no longer afraid of what lies within Wonderland because she’s now become a part of it and that means there’s no stopping her from putting an end to the horrors of this realm.  This is what I really enjoyed about this issue, seeing Violet finally able to just really let loose.  No fear or worry about the consequences, she’s what needs to be done and just goes for it.  A good example is when the band of monsters show up after her and The Void had consummated.  As The Void and the leader of the gruesome group bicker between themselves, Violet just conjures up a sword and sets to hacking off one of the creature’s arms.  No hesitation whatsoever, she sees an enemy and they’re getting cut, or stabbed, or smashed, or anything that’s needed to get the job done.  Violet is a force to be reckoned with now and with her newfound abilities, there isn’t much that can stop her.  I found the overall issue to be a great piece of work.  It had hot bedroom action, scandalous revelations, argumentative yelling and fire, all rolled up into one nice little package for your reading pleasure.

With Violet now in possession of the power of the Hatter, the only thing left to do is to find her mother and then start cleaning up the chaotic nightmare of Wonderland.  It’s a big job, but it’s nothing Violet can’t handle, especially with all of these turn coats running around.  So, head out to your nearest store and snag a copy of the final installment of Wonderland: Asylum, Pat would really appreciate it.  For more info on where to find this issue, please visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland: Asylum 4

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Locked away with no one to turn to, Violet begins to believe that all hope really is lost, until a strange group of birds show up and provide her with a means to reach out to unknown ally.  The birds arrive too late however, and Violet is lead away to prepare for her pending nuptials.  Will help arrive before she ties the knot, or will she accept her place beside The Void and obtain the means to put an end to Wonderland?  Find out in the penultimate chapter of Wonderland: Asylum.

It’s the wedding of the century as Violet and The Void walk down the aisle.  Can’t really say it’s a mutual consensus, but that’s Wonderland for ya.  Now, I’m not sure if The Void is too cocky, or too lovestruck to see that this whole situation probably won’t end well for him.  I mean, Violet despises him and yet he’s willing to grant her an immense amount of power if she accepts him?  I don’t know, I feel like there’s a fine print to these powers that The Void isn’t telling her and that’s why he’s so willing to bestow them upon her.  What’s to stop Violet from turning on him after she gets them?  The power of the Mad Hatter has done a number on everyone else who’s obtained it, so what’s to say it won’t change her as well?  Sure enough, as The Void tricks Violet into marrying him, the Madder Hatter shows up with a trail of bodies in her wake.  Here is the prime example of the power gone wrong.  Once a proud police detective, now a psychopathic killer, the Madder Hatter will now stop at nothing to take out her rival for the hat.  She has followed Violet everywhere she’s gone and now the time has finally come to decide the rightful heir to the power.  Remember though, this is still Wonderland, so things aren’t ever as they seem.  As much as they’d like to think otherwise, The Void is still in control of the situation.

A few important things happened in this issue, most that are better left to be discussed in the next review, however there is one thing I’d like to touch upon for this book and that’s that the Keepers are the ones who brought about Wonderland, or more specifically The Void, in the first place.  From what I’ve seen in all of the other Zenescope series, it seems like the Keepers are pretty much the root of all of the problems, The Being and The Void are two prime examples.  And the best part is, the Keepers just don’t seem to care that much about what they’ve wrought.  These two immensely powerful entities have been left unchecked for years and it’s pretty much up to the ones that they’ve been terrorizing to put a stop to them.  Left alone in the world of Wonderland, The Void began to dream and create, at first making things simply out of the ordinary, but not all of his dreams had turned out so well and began mutating into the grotesque nightmares that have plagued the Liddle family their whole lives.  If only these Keepers had paid more attention to their creations, a lot of pain and suffering could have been avoided.  This isn’t something that I found truly enjoyable, in fact I’m finding myself feeling the same as the last issue, but I felt like it was important enough to say something.

The Void and Violet are now husband and wife and their witness couldn’t have objected more.  The Madder Hatter has Violet by the throat, but she may have lost this round before it even began.  This isn’t a true “Red Wedding”, but it’s just about as violent.  So, pick up your copy now while The Void still permits it.  For more info on where to find this issue, please visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland: Asylum 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

After escaping into Wonderland, Violet finds herself face-to-face with a being known as The Void.  He claims he’s here to help Violet, but she knows better than to trust anything from Wonderland.  However, with the Madder Hatter hot on her trail, Violet may need to go against every instinct and accept a helping hand from The Void.  Pat Shand continues Violet’s tale of trials and tribulations in this latest chapter of Wonderland: Asylum.

The Void has it bad, and he has it bad for Violet.  He’s completely infatuated with her and she wants nothing to do with it.  I mean, this is the essence of Wonderland for crying out loud!  This is the cause of all of the nightmares and horrors that have plagued Violet’s family for generations.  And now, all it wants to do is get down and dirty with her.  In fact, the Void claims that they were destined to be together, which Violet isn’t buying one bit.  He may talk a big game, but she knows better than to trust anything even remotely related to Wonderland.  The Void sweeps her up, regardless of how she feels about him, and takes her on a journey of revelation, a journey that reveals new aspects of the Liddle family’s altercations in Wonderland.  Everything was by The Void’s design, all so he could find that perfect piece to help him realize his true vision for Wonderland.  The Liddle family has been nothing but playthings for him.  Everything that has happened throughout the Wonderland series has all been a result of The Void having his fun.  Now with the puppetmaster in her sights, it’s Violet’s time to shine.

This issue metes out the heart of the series and ties everything together and I think that’s what I like best about this issue.  After all of this time and going on this crazy roadtrip, we’re finally seeing what’s all been about and all wrapped up in one issue.  No more dragging out plot points, this is the whole enchilada, so to speak.  I’ve read some series in the past where the cusp of the story is prolonged over several issues, which can be exciting at times, but then again it can get a bit tedious too.  Sometimes, you just want it all summed up for you so you don’t have to wait a whole month for yet another tidbit of information.  However, as result of all of these revelations, I can’t really go into too much detail as to what happens, through fear of revealing any surprises.  It is well worth the read, trust me on this one.  Now that the point of it all has been brought to the surface, we can sit back and enjoy the antics of Violet as she tries to make her way out of Wonderland and away from The Void and the Madder Hatter.  The series can only get better from here and I for one am really looking forward to how this pans out.

All has been revealed now, as The Void attempts to woo Violet to his side.  Little does she know however, that as she resists his advances, Wonderland’s dark forces are at work recruiting more lost souls to fill its empty roles.  Everything is falling into place as Violet continues her journey through the dangers of Wonderland.  So, be sure to snag a copy of the latest chapter of the Wonderland: Asylum saga.  Consider yourself committed if you don’t.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Wonderland: Asylum 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

During a skirmish with the Madder Hatter and the Dark Cheshire Cat, Violet flees through the looking glass.  Now she finds herself in Wonderland, the very place her mother had been running from for so long.  It turns out, however, that Violet is not alone.  Who is this mysterious new stranger and are they friend or foe?  Find out in the thrilling new mini-series from the creative mind of Pat Shand, Wonderland: Asylum.  There is no escape from the madness.

The time has come for Violet to experience the horrors of Wonderland first-hand.  All her life, she’s heard her mother tell stories about this place, all of the horrors Calie endured while trapped in here and everything that had followed her out.  It is a place of pure evil and no one should ever have to witness what goes on in there.  Unfortunately, Violet found herself caught between a rock and a hard place and chose the lesser of two evils at the time.  Down Violet goes, down the rabbit hole, reliving the tragedy that is the Liddle family.  Now she’s in a world unknown to her, with a lurking terror her only companion.  The time has come for Violet to show off her newfound abilities and begin her trial in Wonderland.  Will she succeed, or succumb to the darkness?  Meanwhile, in an insane asylum on Earth, the evil of Wonderland has begun recruiting new madmen to fill the void that Calie had left from her previous run-through.  It seems like, no matter Calie and Violet do, Wonderland finds a way to seep into the dark recesses of the Earth realm.  It may be up to Violet to finally put an end to the terror that is Wonderland.

Now it’s really time for Violet to shine.  She’s lived her life in fear of Wonderland, but now she’s ready to take it on full-force.  This series is about Violet and how she deals with being on her own against all of the horrors her mother had been telling her about and that’s what I like about this issue and what’s to come with this series.  The Wonderland series as a whole has always centered around Alice and Calie, primarily Calie though, so now we get to see what the new generation brings to the table.  Violet’s upbringing was different than Calie’s.  She didn’t have the mother with psychological issues and suicidal tendencies, she didn’t have the adulterous father, or sadistic younger brother.  All Violet had was Calie and their eventual nomadic existence.  Sure, there was the constant threat of some monstrosity from a hell dimension slaughtering them at moment’s notice, but they had each other.  Calie was there for Violet, protected her, and taught her everything she knew about how to survive Wonderland.  Violet’s on her own now and with Pat’s great track record of writing badass women, Violet is going to be a force to be reckoned with.  This is just a great issue that sets us off on Violet’s path toward awesomeness.

I honestly couldn’t find anything that I didn’t like.  The artwork was a little iffy, but it works out with the disorder and chaos of Violet’s time in Wonderland.  I’m looking forward to what’s to come and to see how Violet grows throughout this series.  Pat has yet to let me down, so I know it’s going to be great.

With Calie out of the picture, Violet must now venture forth into insanity itself.  There’s no telling what new horrors she will have to face, but she’s been preparing for this for as long as she can remember.  It’s time Violet experience what her whole family has, so she knows how best to stop it.  So, pick up Wonderland: Asylum 1 and watch the newest generation of Liddle gives Wonderland a run for its money.  You’d be crazy to miss this one.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Ascension 3

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 9:00 AM

As The Being dishes out his own brand of justice, his morality comes into question by the very ones he has given power to.  Before he can deal with the traitors, however, an assault force, headed by the Realm Knights, commences an attack on The Being.  Will it truly be enough to put an end to his reign of terror, or will Sela need to execute her back-up plan?  Find out in the exciting new issue of Ascension, written by Pat Shand.

Jackie Hyde never asked for the power of the Shadowlands.  She just wanted to be a normal college girl, with normal college girl problems.  The Shadowlands had other plans for her however, and she soon found herself surrounded by the bodies of her classmates.  The Being saw this untapped potential and chose to teach Jackie how to control this new power.  She didn’t want to accidentally hurt anyone anymore, so she grateful for the chance to keep her powers in check.  That is, until Jackie saw firsthand how forgiving The Being could be.  All it took was a single question and suddenly The Being became the monster everyone truly saw him for.  If even the slightest look of doubt is all it takes to set him off, then perhaps The Being isn’t as powerful as he’s claiming to be.  If he really is all-powerful, then a question shouldn’t mean anything.  All Jackie wanted to know was what happened to make the prison collapse.  From what I could see, there wasn’t even any hint of doubt to her look or words, just a question out of curiosity, but The Being took it as though Jackie was calling him out as a fraud right then and there.  It’s looking all of this divine power is making The Being paranoid and completely corrupting his sense of morality.  The power was never meant for him to begin with and it’s taking its toll on, not only himself, but his new world order.  With her former allies now aligned with The Being, it looks like it’s up to Sela to bring him down herself if this nightmare is ever to end.

What I liked about this issue is that we get to see The Being at his best and his worst.  He’s not this perfect entity who knows what’s best for the rest of the world, he’s definitely fallible and it shows in a big way.  I mean, he’s provoked into a fit of rage over a simple question.  I’d say he’s slightly unbalanced.  However, when a “true enemy” shows up, The Being wipes out the lot of them without even breaking a sweat.  Seeing both of these aspects in play shows just how dangerous The Being has become.  It’s a great set-up for the big brawl that’s sure to come between him and Sela.  Pat is doing great with these crazy characters, especially the ones you start off liking and then just want to see them get taken out.  No problems to be had with this one and I’m truly looking forward to the next issue.  It’s not the final one, but something is definitely brewing and it’s going to be one for the ages.

The newly appointed allies of The Being are beginning to show their true colors, as the stage is set for an epic show down between Sela and The Being.  Sela has a few more tricks up her sleeve and one that could possibly mean her end.  So, pick up Ascension issue 3 and see if The Being is judging a town near you (and if so, make sure your record is clean enough).  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Robyn Hood Legend 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 12:00 PM

Confounded and betrayed, Robyn reluctantly returns to Nottingham only to be greeted by the dark forces of Cal, The Sheriff of Nottingham.  With Allies and enemies alike, Robyn must now fight her way to the Sheriff’s stronghold, in order to finally put an end to his reign of terror.  However, something is amiss, something Will Scarlet neglected to tell Robyn that could jeopardize their entire mission.  Writer Pat Shand brings you the next exciting installment of the final chapter of Robyn Hood’s sordid story, where nothing is as it seems anymore.

Will Scarlet, alive!  How did he survive the Sheriff’s attack and is this even really the Will Scarlet she knows.  These are the kinds of thoughts that swirl through Robyn’s mind at this revelation.  This was the man she had fallen for during her time in Nottingham, only to watch him be cut down by Cal King and now he’s standing right in front of her.  Confused and overwhelmed she agrees, albeit reluctantly to accompany Guy of Gisbourne and Marian back to Nottingham.  Questions are put on hold however, as no sooner do they arrive in Nottingham are the attacked by the Sheriff’s dark horde.  The group soon wins the day with help from two more unlikely allies and it’s not until after they gain a moment’s rest do the revelations come.  Robyn has just had he world rocked essentially.  Living two lives as both hero and villain she never had time for love, nor did she believe she needed it, that is, until she met Will Scarlet.  He believed in her from the start and stuck by her through thick and thin, only to die and be resurrected and in the company of the man who aided in his death.  She can only assume at this point that things must be really bad if this alliance has been forged, what other explanation could there be?  It’s a classic case of “the enemy, of my enemy is my friend.”  Cal must be stopped and Robyn knows that she’s the only one can end this once and for all.

This series just keeps getting better with each issue.  There are so many different plot twists that you really don’t know what to expect from panel-to-panel and that keeps this issue interesting.  If you read the previous volume; Robyn Hood: Wanted (but, if you haven’t you should) then you saw how Will met his untimely demise.  Well apparently in this realm, death is survivable.  However, that’s not the only thing to keep you guessing.  The team-up between Guy, Marian and Will is sure to leave you scratching your head.  Pat has kept this issue and, so far, series as a whole from getting stale and predictable.  Sure you expect all of this kind of thing from the big name comic companies, but this is a world of chaos and you should never take anything for granted.  This is why I really enjoyed this issue, the unpredictability of it all.  It gives this series just one more aspect to enjoy.  I couldn’t find anything I didn’t enjoy about this issue and I whole-heartedly recommend this to everyone.

Returning to Nottingham and finding herself in trouble, is nothing new to Robyn.  However, teaming up with one of her most hated enemies and her previously dead lover, has definitely changed things up for her.  It’s up to Robyn to put an end to the Sheriff’s reign of terror, if she can get through it without losing her mind, or killing a teammate in the process.  So, join Robyn as she continues her quest to save Nottingham once again.  What else could go wrong at this point?  Pick up your copy today!  For more info on where to find this issue, please visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Ascension 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:02 AM

The Being has now proclaimed himself the new god and all would be wise to change their ways, lest they face his wrath.  The Realm Knights, now aware of The Being’s return, begin formulating a plan to put a stop to his brand of “justice”.  But, is The Being really doing more harm than good, and will Samantha be able to take him down from within before she has to get her hands dirty?  Read issue 2 of Ascension from writer Pat Shand and witness the coming of a new age.

So, The Being has taken the whole “vengeful god” thing to heart.  No evil goes unpunished now and it would truly seem like he’s making a difference.  However, the Realm Knights know better than to trust him.  They’ve seen The Being in action firsthand and they know the true extent of his power.  The Realm Knights know what they must do now, but it’s Sela who discovers Samantha amongst The Being’s ranks, which could be a help, or a hindrance.  The Being is set on purging all evil from the realms and that includes those who served him in the Shadowlands.  At this point in the story, I’m not really seeing how bad this Being is and people all over are starting to come around to that same mentality.  Crimes are having swift consequences, harsh as they may be, but justice is being served.  No more second chances through back-door dealings in court, if you commit the crime, you are dealt with by The Being, or any of his inner-circle, on the spot.  This leads the series into a bit of a moral dilemma that has plagued media and society in general for years;  which is better, swift justice, or a trial of one’s peers?  An argument can be made for both points.  Sure, on-the-spot punishment can be effective, but there have been many cases of wrongful accusations and an innocent person was jailed or put to death for something they didn’t do.  On the other hand, a trial gives a person a chance to plead their case, but so much corruption amongst the courts and legal system has made the whole thing a moot point.  The Being only sees things as black and white, therefore trials are deemed unnecessary in his eyes and many are coming around to this viewpoint and so the endless debate continues.  However, The Being may find out that it’s not so cut-and-dry in the end.

Now this was an awesome issue right off the bat.  It opens up with a truly horrible and realistic crime: a gunman roaming about a school.  Something I know we all grow tired of seeing splayed across the news.  All that senseless death and violence.  So, who should show up, but The Being and he deals with the gunman in his own special way, now one of my favorite comic scenes.  Seriously though, you can’t help but root for The Being when he “handles” that kind of situation.  I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve heard stuff like that happening and wanting to react the same way The Being does.  This is one of those rare occasions where I find myself actually rooting for the villain, or supposed villain of the story.  In fact, Pat has written this villain so well, that you almost feel sorry for all he has to endure in order to eliminate all of the evils of the world.  There’s a definite struggle there and you see it weighing on him, more and more as the story progresses.  Great job with this one Pat, definitely one of your best issues in my book.  Add in some great lines by Butch Mapa and you’ve got one fine comic here.

My only concern with this issue was that we didn’t get to see The Being deal with more issues all over the world.  It would have been cool to see how he would handle the conflicts overseas, or putting a stop to all of the terrorist groups.  It seems like The Being has no great love, or tolerance, for the evils of the world, but for an entity that wants to have complete order throughout the world, he hasn’t branched outside of the borders of the US.  So, aside from that, I can stress enough how great this issue is.

With the old gods now out of the way, The Being has a new standard for how the world should work.  However, being all powerful and omnipotent may not be all it’s cracked up to be.  The forces of good watch in anticipation for that moment when The Being finally shows his true colors.  So, grab issue 2 of Ascension, or else face the judgment of The Being.  Trust me, you’re going to want to snag this one.  For more info on where to find this book, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Robyn Hood Legend 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 9:00 AM

It’s the beginning of the end, with the opening of the third volume in the Robyn Hood trilogy, from the creative mind of Pat Shand.  All the good she had done for Nottingham has all been for nothing, thanks to the efforts of the Sheriff of Nottingham.  Now back in the Earth Realm, Robyn seeks to mete out her own brand of justice in order to put to rest all she had lost.  Little does she know, however that all may not be as it seems.

Unfortunately I haven’t read through the previous volume of Robyn Hood, but from what I can tell, something went down.  She’s back in Earth Realm and rather shaken up.  Will Scarlet has been killed by the Sheriff of Nottingham, whom was summoned forth by Guy of Gisbourne, and Nottingham is all ashambles.  Robyn just doesn’t know what to do anymore and is practically on the verge of giving up entirely, so she goes out to right the wrongs of Earth, one crime at a time, in order to dissipate the pain of losing Will.  More so than ever, Robyn has become the tragic hero.  Sure, in the beginning she was merely out seeking revenge and accidentally saved the people of Bree and in turn Nottingham in the process.  However, after seeing what good she can do and all of the suffering going on in both Myst and on Earth and finally finding someone who sees her for who she really is, Robyn truly wants to be the people’s champion.  But that was all taken away, thanks to the actions of Guy of Gisbourne.  Robyn sees no hope in ever making a difference ever again, I mean, she’s pretty much lost everything at this point.  So, you can only imagine her rage at seeing Guy on Earth with Maid Marian in tow.  All I know is that I definitely would not want to be the one to try and break up that fight.

Now, this is a great first issue.  A little slow, but with the nice little plot twist and the ominous ending, things are only just starting to heat up.  With this volume, we get to see a completely defeated Robyn, no gusto, no motivation, she’s just kinda going through the motions.  It’s great to see this character in this light, it’s something new and fresh and gives Robyn that much more realism.  She isn’t just some ass-kicking, arrow machine, we now see she is more than that.  This is the first real sign of vulnerability she’s shown since before she was taken into Myst.  She’s grown into such a great character and I’m truly looking forward to seeing how her story ends.  Compliment this story with some great artwork and this is definitely a recommendation from me.  My only regret is that I’ve missed out on the previous volume, so there’s going to be some references and revelations that I’m not going to get right away, but if you’ve done the same, don’t let that deter you from this great read.

Heartbroken and defeated, Robyn wanders the city streets of Earth looking to put an end to the crime and corruption, if only to keep her mind occupied.  Now, an enemy has followed to Earth and an ally she once thought lost, has returned.  It’s going to take all of Robyn’s willpower not to put an arrow through this foe seeking her aid and even more just to cope with what has transpired.  So, join Robyn as she strikes up an unlikely alliance and begins her final journey to Myst.  For more info on where to pick up this issue, visit the Zenescope website, the Zenescope Facebook page.

Ascension 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 9:00 AM

The Hunters have lost and The Being stands triumphant.  Having slain his father The Maker, The Being now sets out to become the new god and bring order to a world of chaos.  However, he’s going to need some help to begin crafting the world to his vision.  Following the events of Unleashed, Ascension, penned by Pat Shand, ushers in a new age as The Being rules supreme and it looks as though there is no one left to stop him.

So, it looks like the plight of the Hunters was all for naught.  The Being is still around and more powerful than ever.  Hell, the Hunters don’t even show up in this issue, so obviously, The Being must’ve wiped the floor with them or else they’d be there, front and center, for his little coming out party.  After having killed The Maker, The Being has now set out to bring about his own brand of order and peace in the world.  In the process, he’s recruited The Keepers, or his version of The Keepers, to bring balance to the turmoil that will surely follow suit once he begins his new rule.  The Being is making The Dream Eater look like a walk in the park, I mean, he’s pretty much taken over the laws of creation and in turn all of existence.  It’s not looking too good for the world or any of the other realms at this point, although help could be closer than anyone thinks.

A whole new event begins in the Grimm Universe and boy, does Pat know how to start them.  Lots of death and lots of betrayal right from the beginning, with no real hope for the heroes anytime soon.  I don’t remember who said it, but no one ever sees themselves as the villain and if bringing about world peace means getting your hands bloody, then so be it.  The Being knows that sacrifices will have to be made and he’s willing to do what it takes in order to bring about his perfect world.  I like that this is essentially, a story about the villain, the villain that everyone thought was going to be the end of everything, trying to play the savior.  I’m pretty sure this has been done before, or something similar to it, but it’s interesting to see how the villain deals with the evils of the world.  From what I can gather, The Being has distanced himself from those that once served him.  Makes one wonder, how good  someone can be if they can turn on their allies without blinking an eye, even if those allies were monsters and demons.  However, if history has shown anything, villains don’t usually cut ties with anyone that could prove useful to them in the future.  I like all of the little nuances that were put in, some nice costume choices for the Halloween party, and the hints of a righteous plot starting up.  With great and even better story, I’m looking forward to seeing how The Being brings order to the world.

Suffice it to say, there wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this issue.  Violence runs rampant and the culling of some old characters, brings in fresh blood.  It’s the beginning of something new and all of the mainstays are scattered and recovering from Unleashed.  Big things are in store for the Grimm Universe and Mr. Shand is here to start us off right.

Ascension, could be the beginning of the end for the Grimm Universe as we know it.  The Being is now the most powerful entity out there and it looks as though he’s running unopposed.  All would seem lost if not for one small glimmer of hope.  So, pick up the first issue of the series that’s sure to send shockwaves throughout all of Zenescope’s books, because The Being’s time has begun.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.
