Princeless: Raven the Pirate Princess 1

Spinning right out of the pages of Princeless, it's the ongoing adventures of Raven Xingtao, The Pirate Princess.  Raven is ready to set off on a quest for revenge against her brothers who have stolen her inheritance.  This monthly ongoing series picks up right where Princeless Volume 3 left off and has the same creative team with Variant covers by Katie Cook, Mike Hawthorne, and Richard Case, limited to 2,000 copies each!

Right after I finished the mini series where she was introduced, there was already a longing for more Adrienne x Raven time.  While it may not be more of the two of them, Action Lab still came through as they always do.  I'm so glad we get to follow along with Raven in her own series Princeless: Raven the Pirate Princess.

Following Raven's departure from her friends, she finds herself captain of a ship with no crew.  Now trying to make up for that in both headcount and money, she runs into a girl also seemingly struggling.  After Raven's generosity is repaid by thievery, a chase ensues, full of action and even fighting.  Once the dust finally settles, the final pages show an unexpected reunion between Raven and an old friend.

As I've come to expect from Princeless series, I got to enjoy more new artwork.  Every artist that gets to add their flair to this title has done a great job.  This newest spinoff is no exception, with strong lineart and colors across every page.  I was especially a fan of all the cool action sequences and hope to see more.

While having read previous books from Princeless would help, and certainly should be done anyways, it's not necessary.  The timing for coming into Raven's new story is at a good point that you could get away with starting here.  I would more than recommend getting into this new series and of course, say you should read them all.

Princeless: The Pirate Princess 4

Join us for the finale of Princeless: The Pirate Princess. Adrienne and Raven are surrounded and outnumbered by pirates ten to one. Will our pair of powerful princesses be able to pound these pesky pirates? Of course they will, but it’s gonna be fun to watch.

Knowing this was only a mini series, I went into this last issue excited and a bit sad at the same time.  I've enjoyed every part of both this and the title as a whole, and was sure this would be a great finale.  My thoughts were correct, and the ending chapter to Princeless: The Pirate Princess now joins as another part of my favorite Action Lab series.

After the rather impressive boarding of the pirate ship belonging to her brother, Raven along with Adrienne now have to deal with the crew.  The two of them face off against a pretty sizable number, but they prove no match for either princess.  Following quite a few impressive fights, Raven finishes off the leader of the pack and seizes control of the vessel.

Although the setting for this chapter was limited to the deck of a ship, it was a mighty issue for artwork.  All of the action with the battle on board made for some really cool visuals.  The various angles, effects and the illustrations themselves were just spectacular.  I'd really love to see more of what was done here and in the mini series as whole in upcoming issues.

If by some unfortunate manner you've never read ANY of Princeless, this is a great mini series to jump into.  For those that know and adore it as much as I do, this is a wonderful addition to the books.  I shall miss these adventures with Adrienne and Raven.  And yes, I completely ship the two of them.  I would absolutely suggest this side story to everybody out there and you should grab all four books right away.

Princeless: The Pirate Princess 3

After the events of issue 2, Adrienne awakens alone on the beach without her armor.  Where has Raven gone and what is she after anyway?  Also, PIRATE FIGHT!  The Eisner-Award nominated PRINCELESS continues!

With the next volume of the main series not due until June, it's a good thing we still have great side stories like this.  And as this one is proving, just because it's an offshoot, that doesn't mean it can't be just as awesome.  Three issues into Princeless: The Pirate Princess and they are proving more and more just how awesome it can be.

The events of the previous night mysteriously left out, Adrienne wakes to no armor or even real clothes and the pirate princess Raven missing.  Luckily, it's all a misunderstanding and Raven is simply taking a quick (and naked) morning dip in the ocean.  This lounging is interrupted by Sparky's frightened return being shot at by cannonballs.  Finding it is one of the pirates working with Raven's brother, they hatch a plan to storm the ship, and in style.  Mostly.

More of the excellent artwork present in the Princeless world is seen again in this title.  There were a couple of really simple, yet neat "effects" for motion sequences in here that I appreciated.  With a good helping of aerial and even nautical scenes, there was more than enough room for lots of great visuals.

I really don't think I can ever get enough of Princeless, it's really hard to not enjoy the heck out of it.  Not only is it one of my favorite Action Lab titles, but sits at the top zone of comics in general.  Quench your thirst for more until the main returns soon with this next issue as soon as you can.

Princeless Vol 4 Issue 1

Adrienne and Bedelia are off to the swamp to rescue Adrienne’s sister Angoisse, but when a crash landing leaves them separated and stranded in a swamp full of dangerous creatures, Adrienne, Bedelia, and Sparky must face their fears just to find each other.

By and large, one of the books that still immediately puts a smile on my face is funny enough one I've probably reviewed more of here than any other.  There has yet to be a book from this series yet that I have finished and was not happy to have read.  It goes without saying that it is such a pleasure and honor to have the chance of previewing the first issue of Volume 4 for the spectacular title Princeless.

Once again we see Adrienne and Bedelia along with their faithful dragon companion Sparky on a quest to save another of Adrienne's sisters.  This time, they head into an ever dangerous swamp and after a mishap with Sparky, find themselves waist deep in trouble (literally at one point!).  As they're dealing with getting out of that, we also see a lot more to do with Adrienne's brother, his shaky relationship with the king and the mysterious wolf clans of the outlying forest.

Diving back into this top favorite of mine, I was eager to see more of the fantastic artwork that always accompanies the writing.  It's really a treat to see all of the characters get new life in every volume or side story with the various artists that lend their talents.  This new chapter was no exception, and the beloved characters were all illustrated beautifully.

There's really no reason to not have seen at least some of this excellent Action Lab series by now.  It is such a fun and solidly written story with wonderful artwork.  It's a series that is so easy to get into and is great for readers of all sorts.  There is plenty of time between now and when this new volume comes out, so do yourself a favor and catch up before you grab this one.

Princeless: The Pirate Princess 2

Bedelia and Adrienne have a new teammate in Raven, The Pirate Princess. She's tough, smart, fun-loving and she's on an epic quest for revenge. When her quest clashes with Adrienne's, sparks will fly and only one princess can come out on top!

I've made it more than evident just how much I love practically everything that comes out of the halls of Action Lab.  In particular, I was an instant fan of the hugely popular series Princeless and all the various titles.  The first issue of The Pirate Princess was a start to another fun story and I was very excited to finally get the second.

Not long after Adrienne and Bedelia begin another adventure with new companion Raven the "Pirate Princess", things begin to get tense.  Adrienne is not such a fan of Raven growing closer to Sparky than even she is, but there isn't much she can do.  That is nothing compared to catching her "borrowing" Sparky for a personal vendetta, and the gloves are off at that point.  They eventually make up by the end, and *gasp* possibly even more??

This series has consistently provided wonderful stories, and equally great artwork.  There were a lot of scenes in this issue that were illustrated just beautifully.  Between a fight scene midair on a dragon to a rescue in the water, it was really top notch.  I've loved all the books thus far from the art side of things, but this might just be my favorite to date.

Of all the titles that I enjoy from Action Lab, I still think Princeless most likely reigns supreme (not counting titles from Danger Zone anyways).  By now, there are more than enough issues that you should have taken advantage of some.  If not, Pirate Princess is a pretty good way to break into it without needing much prior info and should be your next pull list item.

Princeless: The Pirate Princess 1

Princess Adrienne is back! This time Adrienne and Bedelia have found another young princess locked away in a tower and decided to rescue her. But Princess Raven is more than meets the eye and Adrienne may have finally met her match. The story that started in FCBD 2013 will finally be told with Limited Edition Variant cover by the original FCBD artist Soojin Paek.

Of the many titles that have come out of Action Lab that I enjoy, and believe me there are quite a few, one grabbed me right away.  The best part is, there never seems to be a lack of content coming out for it, both in monthly releases and one shot specials.  It’s been a little while since I had a Princeless book in my hands and it always makes my day to read a new one.  Lucky for me, the first issue of Princeless: The Pirate Princess made its way to me.

Truth be told, I haven’t had the greatest luck with FCBD the last few years.  As such, I never got to read what must have been the inspiration for a full issue of this story introducing a new companion.  During the typical adventures of our two leading ladies Adrienne and Bedelia, they come across a tower with a princess who isn’t one of Adrienne’s sisters.  This new “damsel in distress” is not your typical princess, as she’s the daughter of the infamous Pirate King.  The three quickly hit it off and by the end decide to continue with the ongoing quest together.

I’ve enjoyed pretty much all the different art from all the different artists who’ve worked with Princeless.  This book continues to keep the series going strong with unbelievably clean illustrations and wonderfully vibrant colors.  I really like the character design for Raven in this book, and that particular style worked well for how her new friends were drawn.

Princeless has always been a favorite of mine, consistently delivering on every front.  The story is always super fun and full of humor, the art regardless of the multitude of artists is constantly good.  If you’ve somehow missed out on this series all this time, you’ve got a great collection of books to find.  For those current fans, this is another one you’re going to want to pick up.

Princeless Vol. 1: Short Stories Collection

The first ever collected edition of Princeless short stories is finally available from Action Lab! Want to know more about Bedelia Smith?  Curious about what happens to Prince Wilcome after King Ashe throws him in jail?  Want to spend more time with the Princesses Ashe?  Get all this and more from a variety of hot young artists as we collect the first four issues of short stories from the Eisner-nominated world of Princeless!

Some of us just can’t get enough of Princeless, like me for instance, and Action lab always seems to deliver.  Whether it is the ongoing series, or fun short stories like this title, one can count on more adventures in this charming fantasy world.  For those that love the latter, Princeless Vol. 1: Short Stories Collection is a fantastic way to enjoy further content.

I’ve actually had the fortune of reading some of what’s included in this collection, so for this review I’ll be focusing on just the first two sections (see reviews on Tales of the Family Ashe and Tales of Girls Who Rock for more)  As for what I am getting my first chance at checking out, it was equally as great to read as the rest.  Stories for Warrior Women 1+2 shows us four stories from the pasts of different characters, and is an excellent way to introduce people to Princeless.  Even being a long time fan, I really love seeing these background tidbits that tease just enough to draw in new fans.

Once again showcasing the amazing talents of different artists, the four flashback stories offer us their own distinctive artistic interpretation of Princeless characters.  And of course along with the great art in the stories, we get more wonderful pinups mixed in.  As much as I love the main series, I think the one shots are my favorite for the art simply to see new ways of showing us the world.

If you at this point have not checked out any of the short stories, or even the continuing series, this is absolutely the best way to break into Princeless.  It is by far one of the most endearing books that I’ve read in quite a long time, and would easily be one of the first books I’d recommend to anyone.  With such an entertaining and often hilarious story with art that always delivers, there’s really no reason to pass up on this title.

Princeless Vol 2

Adrienne is hot on the trail of her older sister Angelica. But in order to save Angelica, Adrienne will have to face a real monster — jealousy.  Meanwhile, another member of the royal family has disappeared and one of King Ashe’s closest allies may be to blame!

It really goes without saying at this point that I am more than delighted with any opportunity to read a book coming out of Action Lab.  One in particular comes to mind, especially with how much of it I’ve been able to see.  I’m speaking, of course, of their wonderful series Princeless.  For those that haven’t read this title, this collection gives just as much reason to do so.

Prior to getting my hands on this full second volume, I had the chance to read issues 1 and 2 some time ago.  Just like my reviews of those two parts indicated, the volume as a whole proves to be packed full of everything that makes Princeless fantastic.  Great writing, nonstop comedy, and beautiful art keep this top notch book going from start to finish.

The next volume of this crazy adventure ride obviously spends a majority of its time with Adrienne and her companions.  After a slightly detoured start to their trek, they do eventually manage to find her older sister Angelica.  Once getting there though, things are not at all what had been expected.  In the mean time thanks to measures back home, Adrienne’s troupe is being hunted down as the arrival of one hunter soon makes evident.  No sooner does she deal with this battle she finds herself fighting something even worse.

An adventure like this needs strong art to go along with the writing, and they continue to deliver through this volume.  The artwork throughout these chapters of the main story has been consistently good.  I really love how the lighthearted feel of the book always seems to be expressed just right through the stand out imagery.

With this sophomore collection of Princeless really moving things along, I absolutely cannot wait to see what’s in store for the upcoming chapters.  Pretty much everything from Action Lab I’ve been lucky enough to read has been good, but this is one of my favorites, if not right at the top.  It’s not too late to get into this spectacular series, so do the wise thing and grab Volumes 1 and 2, as well as any of the one shots.

Princeless Tales of Girls Who Rock

Princess Adrienne is on the loose again, and this time she brought some friends! While Adrienne may be the first runaway princess, she’s certainly not the only girl who rocks! Come join Adrienne, Bedelia, Sparky, Tempest, and some brand new friends in Princeless: Tales of Girls Who Rock, a one-shot sure to introduce you to your next comics obsession!

Sometimes when you can’t get enough of something, your prayers get answered.  Granted, it was more hoping than praying that I did for additional Princeless content.  Either way, we were given another offshoot issue with Princeless Tales of Girls Who Rock, which in itself rocks.  All around, everything about getting more of this series rocks whether it’s a one-shot or more of the ongoing story.

Once again, we get to see another compact, stand alone issue featuring three more stories from the Princeless world.  Only one directly mentions anyone from the Ashe royal family, although I’m sure in some way or another all the characters have something to do with the books.  Not having read everything yet, that is one drawback not knowing, but the stories are fun regardless.

Along with the three different tales, we are exposed to another handful of artistic talent.  The styles definitely vary quite a bit between each of the stories within.  It’s always neat to me seeing the different way artists go about drawing the same world.  They each had their own unique approach to painting a picture, and were all around successful in doing so.

This particular one-shot didn't seem to be as attached to the main storyline as the last I read.  Then again, I may be missing details from issues I haven’t yet had a chance to check out.  That being said, I still enjoyed getting more Princeless content and would say this is worth adding to the collection.

Princeless Tales of the Family Ashe

 While Adrienne is having the adventure of her lifetime, her family is getting pulled into the fray!  Learn what happens to the ethereal Angelica in the aftermath of Adrienne's rescue attempt!  Shudder to learn what horrible fate has befallen Adrienne's next sister, Angoisse!  And learn the rest of the tale of the young King Ashe, ensnared in the trap of the fiendish elves.

It’s not surprising to me at all that we would get some one-shots for the ever popular Princeless title.  The series, in my humble opinion, is one that is more than deserving of extra content.  From the very first issues I got my hands on, it has definitely been one of my favorites in recent months.  With this addition to the collection, Tales of the Family Ashe puts one more notch in the count.

Although short and sweet, this issue manages to squeeze in three separate, yet very entertaining stories of different members of the family.  Each one adds just a little more to the ongoing tale of the royals and all the interesting events happening throughout.  As was proven in this issue, there is certainly no shortage of things going on to provide us plenty more story to look forward to.

With each portion of the book, we are of course treated to the talents of three artists.  Their styles were as varied as the stories themselves, but all gave us really great visuals.  As an added bonus, there were even more artists that provided some nicely done pinups to split up each section.

If you haven’t already gotten on board for this wonderful book, this is actually a pretty good way to dig into it.  Granted, knowing some of the story written prior helps, but is by no stretch necessary to enjoy this one-shot.  So if you’re looking for a new title, this is one I’d more than suggest picking up.  And for those current fans, you’ll have more Ashe family adventures to take in.

Princeless Vol 2 Issue 2

Adrienne is hot on the trail of her older sister Angelica. But in order to save Angelica, Adrienne will have to face a real monster - jealousy. Meanwhile, another member of the royal family has disappeared and one of King Ashe's closest allies may be to blame!

I normally don’t find myself feeling the need to start off talking about the cover of a book, but the front of Princeless Vol #2 is just too funny not to.  I won’t deny that books with risque covers draw me in, but I can also appreciate the argument being made on how relevant they actually are.  Regardless of your stance on this though, I personally got a laugh out of this.

So, onto the book itself.  It starts off with a flashback that threw me off at first, but once you realize what’s going on, you get a bit of history for one of the characters.  From there we continue the central adventure that our two heroines are on.  It actually bounces back and forth between that and the background events affecting their quest, giving the story plenty to feed on.

As you would expect from this series, it’s full of the quality humor that makes these books so fun.  There’s really no doubt that the amusing situations and character interactions which present themselves are one of the biggest strengths in the series.  Even when the story leans to the darker, more serious side, it is written just as well and is just as interesting.

The artwork continues to do a good job in adding its quality imagery to the tale.  Both the characters and backgrounds are still just as vibrant in this issue.  This style is one I’ve grown fond of with these books and hope it keeps up.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the first volume of Princeless, make the effort so you can get to the second.  The series is so much fun to read and it’s one that everyone can have a great time with.  Volume 2 is one I’ve been enjoying just as much and look forward to the other half.

The first issue of "The Order of Dagonet", written by "Princeless" scribe Jeremy Whitley and illustrated by the amazing Jason Strutz is now available for free to anyone that uses Comixology.  People often tout issues as "jumping on points" but what better jumping on point could you ask for than the first issue!  If you've been meaning to check the book out or if you're a fan of Princeless (or even just a fan of free stuff) this is your chance to try out a great book.  And if that wasn't enough, the free issue is a 44 page double-sized book!

For those who don't know, "The Order of Dagonet" is the tale of the reemergence of mythological creatures into modern England and those tasked with fighting them.  When the seal is broken that's been keeping the monsters of lore at bay, the only people who can stop them are the Knights of England.  Unfortunately, the age old tradition of knighting has changed a bit since the ages of old.  The knights who come to the rescue are not men in shining armor, but instead a burnt out rock star, a Shakespearean actor turned B-movie regular, and an author of popular children's books.  They're no heroes, but they're our last defense against the forces of Faerie!

Princeless Vol. 2 Issue #1

The princess who ran away is back along with her new friend, Bedelia the girl blacksmith and her loyal guardian dragon Sparky. Now that Adrienne has escaped, she has her eyes set on freeing her sisters. First up is the most beautiful girl in all the kingdom, Angelica.

However, things will not be easy for our heroines as the King believes Adrienne is dead and has put a bounty on her killer: Adrienne.

The Good

Everything that got me to love Princeless in the first collection is just as prevalent in the first issue of volume 2.  We even get some additional characters to start things off with even more bang.  The adventures of our main characters are really starting to kick in, and we continue to get great writing and art to take us along on the journey.

The Bad

The change in artwork caught me off guard at first, but it’s good quality quickly made up for it.

The Summary

The world of Princeless is still doing an excellent job of delivering wonderful material for the masses to read.  If you haven’t done yourself the favor of checking out the first volume, get on it now.  I’m sure things are going to stay as good, if not get only better as this tale goes on in the new volume.
