Ascension 1

The Hunters have lost and The Being stands triumphant.  Having slain his father The Maker, The Being now sets out to become the new god and bring order to a world of chaos.  However, he’s going to need some help to begin crafting the world to his vision.  Following the events of Unleashed, Ascension, penned by Pat Shand, ushers in a new age as The Being rules supreme and it looks as though there is no one left to stop him.

So, it looks like the plight of the Hunters was all for naught.  The Being is still around and more powerful than ever.  Hell, the Hunters don’t even show up in this issue, so obviously, The Being must’ve wiped the floor with them or else they’d be there, front and center, for his little coming out party.  After having killed The Maker, The Being has now set out to bring about his own brand of order and peace in the world.  In the process, he’s recruited The Keepers, or his version of The Keepers, to bring balance to the turmoil that will surely follow suit once he begins his new rule.  The Being is making The Dream Eater look like a walk in the park, I mean, he’s pretty much taken over the laws of creation and in turn all of existence.  It’s not looking too good for the world or any of the other realms at this point, although help could be closer than anyone thinks.

A whole new event begins in the Grimm Universe and boy, does Pat know how to start them.  Lots of death and lots of betrayal right from the beginning, with no real hope for the heroes anytime soon.  I don’t remember who said it, but no one ever sees themselves as the villain and if bringing about world peace means getting your hands bloody, then so be it.  The Being knows that sacrifices will have to be made and he’s willing to do what it takes in order to bring about his perfect world.  I like that this is essentially, a story about the villain, the villain that everyone thought was going to be the end of everything, trying to play the savior.  I’m pretty sure this has been done before, or something similar to it, but it’s interesting to see how the villain deals with the evils of the world.  From what I can gather, The Being has distanced himself from those that once served him.  Makes one wonder, how good  someone can be if they can turn on their allies without blinking an eye, even if those allies were monsters and demons.  However, if history has shown anything, villains don’t usually cut ties with anyone that could prove useful to them in the future.  I like all of the little nuances that were put in, some nice costume choices for the Halloween party, and the hints of a righteous plot starting up.  With great and even better story, I’m looking forward to seeing how The Being brings order to the world.

Suffice it to say, there wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this issue.  Violence runs rampant and the culling of some old characters, brings in fresh blood.  It’s the beginning of something new and all of the mainstays are scattered and recovering from Unleashed.  Big things are in store for the Grimm Universe and Mr. Shand is here to start us off right.

Ascension, could be the beginning of the end for the Grimm Universe as we know it.  The Being is now the most powerful entity out there and it looks as though he’s running unopposed.  All would seem lost if not for one small glimmer of hope.  So, pick up the first issue of the series that’s sure to send shockwaves throughout all of Zenescope’s books, because The Being’s time has begun.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.
