So, The Being has taken the whole “vengeful god” thing to heart. No evil goes unpunished now and it would truly seem like he’s making a difference. However, the Realm Knights know better than to trust him. They’ve seen The Being in action firsthand and they know the true extent of his power. The Realm Knights know what they must do now, but it’s Sela who discovers Samantha amongst The Being’s ranks, which could be a help, or a hindrance. The Being is set on purging all evil from the realms and that includes those who served him in the Shadowlands. At this point in the story, I’m not really seeing how bad this Being is and people all over are starting to come around to that same mentality. Crimes are having swift consequences, harsh as they may be, but justice is being served. No more second chances through back-door dealings in court, if you commit the crime, you are dealt with by The Being, or any of his inner-circle, on the spot. This leads the series into a bit of a moral dilemma that has plagued media and society in general for years; which is better, swift justice, or a trial of one’s peers? An argument can be made for both points. Sure, on-the-spot punishment can be effective, but there have been many cases of wrongful accusations and an innocent person was jailed or put to death for something they didn’t do. On the other hand, a trial gives a person a chance to plead their case, but so much corruption amongst the courts and legal system has made the whole thing a moot point. The Being only sees things as black and white, therefore trials are deemed unnecessary in his eyes and many are coming around to this viewpoint and so the endless debate continues. However, The Being may find out that it’s not so cut-and-dry in the end.
Now this was an awesome issue right off the bat. It opens up with a truly horrible and realistic crime: a gunman roaming about a school. Something I know we all grow tired of seeing splayed across the news. All that senseless death and violence. So, who should show up, but The Being and he deals with the gunman in his own special way, now one of my favorite comic scenes. Seriously though, you can’t help but root for The Being when he “handles” that kind of situation. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve heard stuff like that happening and wanting to react the same way The Being does. This is one of those rare occasions where I find myself actually rooting for the villain, or supposed villain of the story. In fact, Pat has written this villain so well, that you almost feel sorry for all he has to endure in order to eliminate all of the evils of the world. There’s a definite struggle there and you see it weighing on him, more and more as the story progresses. Great job with this one Pat, definitely one of your best issues in my book. Add in some great lines by Butch Mapa and you’ve got one fine comic here.
My only concern with this issue was that we didn’t get to see The Being deal with more issues all over the world. It would have been cool to see how he would handle the conflicts overseas, or putting a stop to all of the terrorist groups. It seems like The Being has no great love, or tolerance, for the evils of the world, but for an entity that wants to have complete order throughout the world, he hasn’t branched outside of the borders of the US. So, aside from that, I can stress enough how great this issue is.
With the old gods now out of the way, The Being has a new standard for how the world should work. However, being all powerful and omnipotent may not be all it’s cracked up to be. The forces of good watch in anticipation for that moment when The Being finally shows his true colors. So, grab issue 2 of Ascension, or else face the judgment of The Being.
