The oceans have never seemed so threatening!
This comic is a refreshing take on the apocalyptic zombie-creature genre that is so prevalent in today’s media. Instead of a zombie plague, there is a sea sickness that turns flesh into melting liquid (eventually water), and compels people to walk into the ocean, never to be heard from or found again.
The story begins after the sickness has killed most of the population. However, two people wash up on the shore with no memory of the year they’ve been missing, and with blue skin. The comic goes on to show the past as much as the present, explaining the state of things. It leaves off with a cliffhanger, giving the reader something to keep reading for when the new issue comes out.
As a fan of end of the world, dystopian settings, I found this very refreshing. The art is good, vibrant, colorful. The story is cohesive. It leaves you guessing the right amount to keep you reading, but it doesn’t have any huge holes that are evident so far, so it’s not too frustrating. I also appreciate the inclusion of main characters of color throughout the book - something we don’t see a lot of in this type of story. While I did find myself wanting more actual action and less exposition, that’s a minor complaint about a book that is very solid overall. Personally, I’m looking forward to the next installment!
