A 60's pastiche with a dark flourish, Lady
Killer posits the idea of the perfect housewife who is also the perfect killer.
It works so well because it takes the idea so seriously, whilst keeping a
cheeky grin on its face so you are never aware if its taking the mick or not.
Joelle Jones is on both writing and artist
duties here and the fusion of the both works well. Joelle's art evokes a pop
art feel to it, with a twist, so that everything looks just a little bit
twisted and ugly. This extends to even the 'perfect' domestic scenes, so in
amongst the garish colours and pristine conditions you never forget the
darkness of that era that popular culture would rather we forget.
What's nice as well is how much effort has
been taken to make it feel like an old pulp comic or grindhouse film. The
colours of some pages stain and melt into one another as if it a comic that has
spent too long in the sun and there are subtle scratches on pages you would
expect to find if it were a recovered film print. The effect of the it, whilst
never detrimental to the comic, sits to remind you that its not exactly a
deadly serious story and one that has its tongue firmly planted in cheek as an
homage to such cult classics.
The humour is a bit more hit and miss,
relying more people lapping up territory explored far better by film makers
like Tim Burton or David Lynch, but its still irreverent enough to keep the
simple enough story pottering along.
Overall, its fun, dumb and it knows it.
