Traveling near the edge of the Black Forest, monster hunter Geralt meets a widowed fisherman whose dead and murderous wife resides in an eerie mansion known as the House of Glass—which seems to have endless rooms, nothing to fill them with, and horror around every corner.
It’s always fun to see video games go through the transition into a comic format. This is especially the case when Dark Horse is the one who brings it to the table. While I’ve only had the opportunity to see game footage, hearing that The Witcher was getting this done interested me. Who knows, maybe this could be what gets me to finally play.
This first issue opens up with Geralt aka “The Witcher” running into a hunter along his travels. The two decide to pair up and begin their journey by going through a stereotypical evil forest. Along the way, they come across a few challenges of the creepy, supernatural kind. Once they finally make it past those, they see themselves facing an ominous looking house, inviting them to the likely horrors within.
The artwork that the visual team provides is spot on for the needs of a dark and foreboding tale like this. The overall shadowy look and constant feel of dread is consistent throughout, as any horror story should have. It’s an awfully frightening environment and you can almost feel how on edge the characters are.
Without any knowledge of the actual game storyline, I’m not sure how much of the books will be canon. Even so, this series lends itself to being enjoyed regardless of what you may or may not know prior. I plan to continue reading future issues and would definitely suggest checking it out.
