Zombies and Demons TPB

An old family heirloom has Elijah on the hunt through the back alleys of New Orleans, while Masumi faces down demons from her past.  Now the two must battle through their own respective specialties in hopes settling some old debts.  Focusing on the exploits of Elijah and Masumi after their time in the Shadowlands, Zombies & Demons delves deeper into these two characters and explores what sent them down their paths of evil extermination.

Elijah’s story hails from the days of slavery.  Having fallen in love with his master’s daughter, Elijah goes on the run only to find himself confronted with entities of dark magic.  All seemed lost until help arrives from another time and now in the present day, Elijah must pay off an old debt.  Meanwhile, having trained her whole life to fight off demons and having witnessed first-hand how much damage they can do to one’s family, Masumi  answers the call to put a stop to these monsters before anymore suffering can be wrought.   Both of these characters spent quite some time in the Shadowlands, fighting countless hordes of immeasurable evil, so it’s good to see them in a more subdued setting (don’t get me wrong, they’re still fighting zombies and demons, but not on the scale that they were in the Shadowlands).  Each three-part story gives the characters a little more background and shows how their stories fit in with the rest of the Hunters.  Love seems to be the main factor in both of their tales and it proves to be what drives them towards their ultimate goal.

In the case with this trade I was kind of indifferent.  I’ve got my usual problems with the art, but the artists chosen did a great job on the interiors.  Story-wise, both mini-series were good, but not great.  A couple of tired elements were used which, in my opinion, detracted from the stories a bit, but not to the point where they were terrible.  I don’t want to give anything away, but when you read this, (the trade I mean) I’m sure you’ll see what I mean.  It’s a great look into how both of these characters came into their own, but it just didn’t excite me enough to want to see their solo stories continue.  However, it’s a great addition to the Unleashed storyline and will fill in any gaps for the endgame.

Zombies and Demons delivers just that and not in short supply.  It’s a battle across time as Elijah and Masumi fight off shadows from their past in order to save their future.  So, crack that whip and take up those swords as these two Hunters make their way towards the final showdown with the Being.  Not even Rick Grimes or Buffy are as efficient as these two.  So, make sure to pick up your copy today.  For more info on where to find this trade paper back, please visit the Zenescope website or the Zenescope Facebook page.
