Zombies and Demons TPB

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

An old family heirloom has Elijah on the hunt through the back alleys of New Orleans, while Masumi faces down demons from her past.  Now the two must battle through their own respective specialties in hopes settling some old debts.  Focusing on the exploits of Elijah and Masumi after their time in the Shadowlands, Zombies & Demons delves deeper into these two characters and explores what sent them down their paths of evil extermination.

Elijah’s story hails from the days of slavery.  Having fallen in love with his master’s daughter, Elijah goes on the run only to find himself confronted with entities of dark magic.  All seemed lost until help arrives from another time and now in the present day, Elijah must pay off an old debt.  Meanwhile, having trained her whole life to fight off demons and having witnessed first-hand how much damage they can do to one’s family, Masumi  answers the call to put a stop to these monsters before anymore suffering can be wrought.   Both of these characters spent quite some time in the Shadowlands, fighting countless hordes of immeasurable evil, so it’s good to see them in a more subdued setting (don’t get me wrong, they’re still fighting zombies and demons, but not on the scale that they were in the Shadowlands).  Each three-part story gives the characters a little more background and shows how their stories fit in with the rest of the Hunters.  Love seems to be the main factor in both of their tales and it proves to be what drives them towards their ultimate goal.

In the case with this trade I was kind of indifferent.  I’ve got my usual problems with the art, but the artists chosen did a great job on the interiors.  Story-wise, both mini-series were good, but not great.  A couple of tired elements were used which, in my opinion, detracted from the stories a bit, but not to the point where they were terrible.  I don’t want to give anything away, but when you read this, (the trade I mean) I’m sure you’ll see what I mean.  It’s a great look into how both of these characters came into their own, but it just didn’t excite me enough to want to see their solo stories continue.  However, it’s a great addition to the Unleashed storyline and will fill in any gaps for the endgame.

Zombies and Demons delivers just that and not in short supply.  It’s a battle across time as Elijah and Masumi fight off shadows from their past in order to save their future.  So, crack that whip and take up those swords as these two Hunters make their way towards the final showdown with the Being.  Not even Rick Grimes or Buffy are as efficient as these two.  So, make sure to pick up your copy today.  For more info on where to find this trade paper back, please visit the Zenescope website or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Hunters: The Shadowlands

Posted by Katie on 8:00 AM

Earth’s last hope of defense just became lost to the Shadowlands.  When the Hunters, Sela, Roman, Elijah, Masumi and Liesel, stop the minions of darkness from bringing forth a new evil upon the world, they are inadvertently sucked into the Shadowlands.  Now the Hunters must face new dangers and atrocities as they battle their way towards the very thing they were trying to stop on Earth, as well as their way back home.  Written by the talented Raven Gregory and Pat Shand, this tie-in to the Unleashed event from Zenescope Shows the trials and tribulations that Sela and crew undergo in order to put an end The Being.

Hunters: The Shadowlands, was a great thrill-ride from beginning to end.  Just when you think our heroes were in the clear, some new horror pops out to give them a run for their money.  Continuing on from issue 0 of Unleashed, Sela and the other Hunters find themselves in the Shadowlands, where none of them are safe and everything is after them.  Unbeknownst to them, however, Roman had actually arrived several years earlier, due to an uneven timestream between Earth and the Shadowlands.  When the Hunters finally meet-up with Roman, they find that his time in the Shadowlands has changed him and not necessarily to be more helpful.  When all is said and done, they discover that what they had originally been trying to stop on Earth is still at large in the Shadowlands and they must stop it here at all costs.  The action never seems to stop in this book as we find the Hunters in fight after fight on their way to the Being.

So, yes I did enjoy this trade.  Raven and Pat know what they’re doing and they’ve brought us a cool, action-packed read.  However, it’s not just the action, they give the Hunters some introspection throughout the series and really show what drives them to fight these monstrosities.  I won’t reveal what those are, but they shine a new light, or maybe one that was already there, on who these characters really are.  The art direction wasn’t bad.  If you’ve been reading my reviews right along, you should know my feelings towards the multiple artists per issue, so I won’t go into that.  However, the artists all had similar enough styles that you couldn’t really tell where the story had changed hands unless you really followed any of them.  It is a cool side-story to the Unleashed series, showing what the Hunters had to deal with while in the Shadowlands.  If you like wholesale monster slaughter, then this is definitely the one for you.

The negatives will forever be the art side of things, until its one artist per issue.  Aside from that, I couldn’t find anything I didn’t like.  Between Raven and Pat, you really can’t go wrong story-wise.  What happens in this series will have repercussions down the line as new relationships are formed and old grudges rekindled.  I like the direction these characters are going in and look forward to seeing how this all plays out.

Hunters: The Shadowlands, is a great read for anyone wanting to delve deeper into the Unleashed event, or even if you just want to see monster death.  The Hunters are in for the fight of their lives and if they can’t get back, it may be the only thing they do.  So, go pick up this great trade paper back and witness a battle of hellish proportions, or something close enough to it.  If she doesn’t make it out, Sela would want her story told.  For more info on where to find this trade, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Unleashed #2 (Grimm Fairy Tales #85)

Posted by Katie on 8:00 AM

Having been resurrected from the dead, Belinda joins forces with Sela and the other Hunters in order to put a stop the Being and his evil schemes.  Still unsure of Belinda’s true intentions, Sela accepts her help and calls upon a reluctant guardian to aid their quest to find the Being.  Grimm Fairy Tales #85 continues the Unleashed saga, forming unlikely alliances in order to stop the greatest evil they’ve ever known.

Like with the Dream Eater Saga, Unleashed spills over into other Zenescope titles so that it’s not just contained within its own side-story.  This storyline is definitely going to have consequences and having issues from the main Zenescope titles tie-in to the event shows how much these other books are going to be affected.  So, it looks like Belinda is back, but not quite as bad as she was before.  In fact she’s offered to help Sela in order to make amends for all that she had done before.  Perhaps it was Belinda’s self-sacrifice that redeemed her, or maybe something else entirely.  Now, with the aid of a former enemy and the support of her re-united team of hunters, Sela sets out for the floating fortress down in Antarctica, hoping to bring them all one step closer to finding the Being.  The Hunters are about to engage in a battle that will determine whether or not they have what it takes to bring down this new evil that’s spreading across the world.

I gotta say, the thing I liked most about this issue was Belinda.  Throughout the Grimm Fairy Tales series and all of its offshoots, we’ve gotten see different aspects of Belinda’s past and present and it doesn’t exactly hold up well in her favor.  Deceit, betrayal and revenge have been the names of her game for so very long that it took a sudden act of self-sacrifice to finally show her the light.  This is one complex character in that getting herself killed is the only way to give her some sense of regret for her previous actions.  Evidence suggests that in no way should Sela trust Belinda in any way, but as we’re now seeing in this issue, Belinda is truly trying to make amends.  I see Belinda in the same light as I do Anakin Skywalker or even Vegeta (if memory serves me right).  All of them suddenly saw the folly of their ways through the actions of one much worse than themselves and in turn, threw themselves into the line of fire and defended the one they had been fighting.  Sure, there are a lot of deaths on their hands, but their now going to use their strengths for the greater good in order to make up for they had done.  Which is why I’ve grown more fond of Belinda.  The bravery she had shown through her death and even more so through her humility towards Sela really let me believe in this character.  So, good on you Pat for giving this reformed villain a second chance.

As it goes with a lot of the Zenescope books I review, there wasn’t anything in this issue that I didn’t approve of.  It’s a special double-sized issue, full of magic, monsters and mayhem with quite a bit of death thrown in for good measure.  The art was pretty tight and the story really pushed the event forward.  Plus Belinda has returned and the world could always use more redheads.

With her former adversary and her team of otherworldly fighters in place, Sela is ready to take on Samira’s fortress.  Being such a loose-cannon in the past, it’s hard to really tell where Belinda’s loyalties lie, but perhaps it’s finally time for her to shine.  Sela and Belinda, what a combo those two will make.  So, for a good read and more insight into what’s to become of everyone during Unleashed, go out and grab this book because once it’s gone, it won’t return like Belinda has.  For more info on where to pick up this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Hunters: The Shadowlands #1

Posted by Katie on 2:00 PM

Having successfully stopped a terrible new evil from being released, Sela and crew find themselves trapped in the Shadowlands, with all of demons and monsters they locked away.  However, not all of them arrived at the same time and so, they set off on a journey to reunite their forces and find a way out of this terrifying wasteland.  Hunters: The Shadowlands, written by Raven Gregory, follows the exploits of Sela and the other hunters as they traverse the perils of the Shadowlands, in an all-new mini-series spun out of the pages of the Unleashed saga.

Set shortly after the events in Unleashed #0, Hunters: The Shadowlands gives us a look at what happened to Sela and the rest of the hunters during their time in the Shadowlands.  The thing that’s established right from the beginning is that in the Shadowlands, time moves differently than it does on Earth.  Night and day don’t always transition when they should and sometimes one or the other doesn’t come at all for extended periods.  It’s a strange desolate place, one that Roman has become all too accustomed to, after centuries of being the only one there.  However, it’s not so much about how Roman has survived for so long (or how he’s even still alive for that matter), but what other evil lays lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right monstrosity to set it loose.  After countless struggles, Sela, Liesel, Masumi and Elijah have no idea as to what awaits them as they journey onward into the great unknown.

So, there definitely was a lot to like about this issue.  A great group of characters, several monster fights and even a slight homage to The Lord of the Rings, but the thing that stood out to me the most was how well it all melded together.  Raven has done it yet again, what looks to be a rather action-packed series that looks suitable for a summer blockbuster.  I really liked seeing this dark and dreary world through each of the characters eyes, share their experiences and not just focus on one to be the leader of sorts.  Each character is unique and they all have a different take, for the most part, on what the Shadowlands have thrown at them.  It’s this diversity that I feel really keeps this story interesting and really adds to all of the subsequent spin-offs that focus more on each character individually.  I also, just wanted to give a shout-out to all of the artists that worked on this issue.  Despite my dislike of having more than one artist work on a single issue, you all pulled it together rather well, to the point where I didn’t even realize there were multiple artists contributing to this (although that could just be me being a little blinded by the story itself, I don’t mean to offend anyone if I did).  Great job all around to everyone.

If anything at all, the multitude of artists working on this one would have been the thing that bugged me the most, but like I said above, I honestly didn’t even notice the difference because the art flowed so well together.  I guess I wouldn’t have such a big issue with more than one artist, if the change wasn’t real noticeable.  It’s that little skip in style that takes me out of the story and then I kinda have to re-analyze what I’m reading for a second or two and that just slows the whole enjoyment of the story down.  All I can say is, if you’re going to use multiple artists, for one reason or another, please try to utilize ones with an art style close enough to each other that it doesn’t take away from the story.

The hunters must join together if they’re ever to find their way out of the Shadowlands, but it seems like something is preventing them from doing just that.  More action awaits these daring adventurers as they take on more and more dangerous adversaries.  So, go check out Hunters: The Shadowlands because although, you might think it’s a good thing, you really don’t want to have Sela hunting you down.  For more info on where to pick up this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Werewolves: The Hunger #1

Posted by Katie on 8:00 AM

The werewolves have been released from the Shadowlands and Roman Asher is the only one who knows how to deal with them.  That is, until one tussle sends Roman through the home of Rolly, and the beast escapes moving on to other unsuspecting victims.  Meanwhile the practices of a local veterinary hospital are a little suspect and possibly downright sinister.  Werewolves: The Hunger, written by Mark L. Miller, is the second mini-series to spring forth from the Unleashed event happening in the Grimm Fairy Tales universe.

The monsters just keep on coming.  Werewolves are the focus of this series and boy do they need attention.  Luckily, the man to give them that attention is one Roman Asher, a hunter who specializes in tracking down and disposing of those unwanted werewolves.  It doesn’t help him any though, when he gets distracted by smashing through someone’s house.  The werewolf gets away and Roman’s left in the care of Rolly.  Now, I kinda get the feeling that there’s something more to this particular werewolf than meets the eye.  I mean, Roman is touted as this big-time werewolf hunter, yet he let this one slip right through his fingers.  Sure, he crashed through a window while fighting it, but it seems like he had been fighting this thing for quite some time before busting in on Rolly.  Why wouldn’t he have just killed it by then?  Seems a bit suspicious, but this is just the beginning of Roman’s side story, so I’m sure all will be revealed in due time.

Now, the thing I found most appealing about this issue, would be Roman himself.  Although not a huge follower, Roman just has this look and demeanor that reminds me of the Punisher.  I see this grizzled old war vet (not necessarily a vet of any conventional wars, but ones of a fantastical sort) who’s been through hell and back to keep the common-folk safe.  He’s willing to do what’s necessary to get the job done and whoah-be-damned anyone who gets in his way.  Like I said, I get a Punisher vibe from Roman, but at the same time, I see something a little different.  If a person gets turned, there’s no hope for them and they just need to be put down.  Just that sense of finality within him tends to make one wonder if Roman really does care if anyone gets in the way.  Not a strict follower of the Punisher, so a lot of this stuff could be him through-and-through, but I’m just relaying what I know.  Mark L. Miller, made a real no-nonsense character and if Roman’s little flashbacks say anything about him, is that there’s more that Mark has yet to show us.

So, with a pretty solid story and art style, there really isn’t anything to complain about.  This whole Unleashed event is shaping up to be something pretty awesome and these mini-series are really adding to the awesome.  I can definitely see much bigger things for all of these characters down the line and I’m sure I’ll be picking up the issues along the way.

Roman is on the hunt and he will be for quite some time with all of the werewolves now out and about.  But, what made him become a hunter and why is he so adamant about straight-up killing them instead of helping them?  I guess the only way to know will be to pick up this issue and the rest of the series as it comes out.  So yes, go check this out because who doesn’t love a good werewolf hunter?  Trust me though, it’ll be a howling good time.  For more info on where to pick up this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Unleashed

Posted by Katie on 5:00 AM

Years ago, Sela and a host of allies, who called themselves The Hunters, stopped a horde of monsters from summoning forth an entity of pure evil.  Sela knew that the only way to truly put this to an end, she would have to seal away the creatures and in turn sacrificing some of her allies in the process.  They all agreed it was for the best.  Flash forward to the present day, where The Being has broken free and released the monsters that had been locked away.  Now, on his quest for ultimate power, The Being is carving a path of destruction throughout the Grimm universe and it looks like Sela is the only one that can stop him again.  Unleashed, the new crossover epic from the writer of the hit Roby Hood series Pat Shand.

Just when you thought the Dream Eater was bad enough, now here comes The Being.  He’s so bad that even The Dark One doesn’t dare mess with him.  Having defeated The Dark One on more than one occasion, Sela seems to be the only one ballsy enough to take The Being on.  She’s done it once before, why not go for the gusto?  However, it looks as though The Being may not be taken so easily this time around.  Now we’re dealing with the bad of the bad.  I’m talking vampires, werewolves, zombies, the whole lot of them, not just those spawned from the pages of the Grimm Fairytales.  Unleashed is the new Zenescope crossover event of the summer and it’s sure to make waves throughout the Grimm universe both in the short term and long term.  When it comes to this sort of thing, Zenescope doesn’t mess around.

Pat sure is kicking ass and taking names over at Zenescope and this series is no exception.  The story shows Sela at her best, but also introduces a new group of allies who are equally as adept at dealing out punishment to the evil hordes.  Not much is known about the four newcomers, but I’m sure Pat’s got something awesome in store for them as the series pans out.  Throw in some out-of-this-world art by Nei Ruffino in issue zero and you’ve sold me.  This looks to be one series I’ll be paying attention to over the coming months.

So let me just continue on my praise of these first two issues here.  I mean, I’ve got nothing to complain about, so why not gush over them a bit more?  Actually, if I did that, I’d be afraid of accidentally revealing something totally awesome that happens in the series so far since I’ve said so much already.  I think it best if I just leave it at that, so you can enjoy the writings of Pat Shand as much as I do.

This series is starting off strong and as I’ve said, I’m really looking forward to what’s to come.  I was first introduced to Pat’s writing with the Robyn Hood series and have yet to be let down with anything else I’ve read of his.  So, if you’ve enjoyed Godstorm, Robyn Hood or anything Pat has had a hand in, these two books are not to be missed.  Pick them up or else risk having The Being unleashed!  You wouldn’t want that now would ya?  For more info on where to find these issues, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Zenescope Entertainment to Unleash Epic Grimm Fairy Tales Event

Posted by Katie on 2:09 PM

Jan, 2013 — Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans for a major Spring/Summer event entitled UNLEASHED.  The massive release will include six separate mini-series and a total of 24 issues (some being oversized issues) that tie directly into the Grimm Fairy Tales Universe. The epic comic book event will delve directly into the world of horror monsters while following those with the skills to hunt them.  Grimm Fairy Tales UNLEASHED is the main seven issue mini-series that begins when hundreds of formerly trapped vampires, werewolves, demons and zombies are all released on Earth by a very powerful entity known as “The Being.”  Now, four separate monster hunters (who fans will get to know in separate “Unleashed” mini-series), must join forces along with Grimm’s kick-ass heroine Sela Mathers in order to stop them.
The five other mini-series will lead directly into UNLEASHED and follow the terrifying stories of the monsters that exist within the Grimm Universe.  These series are The Eternal (Vampires), The Unseen (Demons), The Hunger (Werewolves) and The Cursed (Zombies).  The fifth series entitled “The Hunters: Shadowlands” will follow those who are chosen to hunt these wretched creatures, including Zenescope’s re-imagined Van Helsing.

“UNLEASHED crosses several genres with a blend of horror, fantasy and action,” states Zenescope’s EIC, Ralph Tedesco. “We’ve wanted to bring classic but updated horror monsters into the Grimm Universe for a while and we came up with an all-encompassing event that would allow us to introduce a lot of great new characters in a captivating way.  A couple of examples include a reinvented female version of the classic Van Helsing character and Elijah, a freed slave from the 19th century who kicks zombie ass. Fans are in for something they never would have expected to see in Grimm and they’re going to absolutely love it!”

The entire Unleashed event will run from April 2013 through September 2013 with the first issues available for order in the February edition of Diamond Previews coming out this week.  See below or visit http://blog.zenescope.com/Unleashed to view the entire Unleashed schedule.
