Everyone has heard stories of things living under their beds
when they were little and this young girl is no different. As an orphan, Mindy finds herself the target
of ridicule and abuse, purely because she is the youngest and is a girl. The only friend she’s had is an older girl
named Rose, who tends to skip out on the orphanage as much as possible. However, something shady is going on and the
creature under the bed is going to make its presence known.
So, this issue wasn’t too bad, not my favorite, but good
nonetheless. The thing that stood out the
most to me was the idea that the monster under the bed wasn’t necessarily there
to scare a person, but more to protect them from the evils of the world. Whenever anyone thinks of something living
under their bed, they immediately think that it’s out to get them, especially
when you’re a little kid. But, when you
introduce the creature as a guardian, the safety factor goes through the
roof. I mean, what little kid wouldn’t
want their own personal monster to watch over them? Here we have Mindy, who’s been tormented for
most of her life, and she finally has something looking out for her. She doesn’t have to be afraid anymore, which
could make her a power player down the road if this series is anything like the
original Grimm Fairy Tales line. The
only thing that bugged me was the hiccups in the artwork, especially with the
eyes in one panel in particular. The
line work by Claudia Balboni looked great overall, but when the characters look
like they have crazy at times when they’re not supposed to, it kind of throws
things off.
