Talent Hunt winning writer TINI HOWARD and artist AILEEN
ORACION challenge the legend of the Spear of Destiny as sins of omission come
to light in this one shot special! Detective Sara Pezzini reveals a lost
manuscript that speaks of a bright young martyr and the dark acts she eclipses
in this tale of an all-new Magdalena.
I gotta tell you, this one definitely brought me back to
when I was much younger. Of the many
series I tried to latch onto in my teen years, Witchblade and other Top Cow
books were up there. With this new
one-shot, I was ready to see what The Magdalena: Seventh Sacrament had to
offer.
Starting off with a brief intro with Sara Pezzini aka
Witchblade, we follow a centuries old telling of a young woman of the faith and
her misfortune travels. In her
possession is a relic spear that was entrusted to her along with the safety of
the king to be. After his unfortunate
death, Sister Agatha finds herself needing to fend off against demons with the
very same spear. The rest as they say is
history, once again told by Ms. Pezzini.
All in all the art for this solo issue was done pretty
well. I wasn’t such a fan of the more
empty panels in the beginning and end, but that’s nitpicking. There were however really nice pages more
towards the end with the fight scenes. I
also have to say, I was particularly won over by the sick cover work.
Whether or not you’re familiar with Magdalena really
doesn’t matter here, especially being a one shot. I’m not entirely sure how this works in with
Witchblade or any other current books if at all. Regardless, Top Cow fans will probably want
this to complete their collection. Other
than that, most will likely just find this as a quick read for the sake of
reading.
