Deceivers

Lincoln McCord and Prince Adony Zaruka are two American con men living abroad in Europe, posing as an oil magnate and the descendant of long-lost royalty to live the high life by leeching off the European elite. But when an international thief begins wreaking havoc on their marks, the deceivers are enlisted by a rogue CIA agent to help entrap him.

I always love getting into a comic that has a premise I’ve never really seen before.  The topic of con men may not be interesting on its own, but throw in government conspiracies and it sure helps.  This winning combination is exactly the kind of story that the appropriately named Deceivers set out to tell.

Con men vs CIA agent vs many a foreign government foe.  That’s what is set before the reader, as two con men do what they do best while being targeted by the CIA.  They’re under the impression one of them is the ghost thief “Ulysses”, and force them into helping bring him down.  With more twists and turns around every corner than I can list, the end result is exactly what you’d expect from this kind of adventure.

The artwork throughout this collection reminded me more of books from early on in my comic reading days.  It has a simpler approach to the illustrations, and visually tells the tale with clean art that doesn’t force you to retrace any steps.  All around it was good and did its job without needing to be flashy.

Admittedly, it took me a while to really get into this story.  Once it started picking up though, I was able to fly right through it.  The story itself was fun, and isn’t a bad book to sit down and pass the time with.  I probably wouldn’t go rushing out to buy this, but is a decent read all the same.
