Two brothers, Wirt and Greg, find themselves lost in the
Unknown, a strange forest adrift in time. With the help of a shadowy Woodsman
and an ill-tempered bluebird named Beatrice, they travel through the foggy land
hoping to find their way home and encountering all manner of adventures along
the way.
Right from the first few pages, I knew this was going to
be a wild little story. After watching enough
Adventure Time and other Cartoon Network shows in passing, you just get a sense
for it. Every once in a while you need
that brand of utter silliness though.
With the show having just started, the Over the Garden Wall Special is
right on time for introducing us to this crazy world.
In case you’ve never had the hilarious pleasure of such
previously mentioned shows, you might not be prepared for the wackiness
ahead. This book is one hundred percent
complete nonsensical fun that’s almost impossible to describe. At the core of it, the story follows a pair
of brothers traveling through an average looking forest. Everything about the journey, including the
characters themselves and those they run into though are everything but
average.
The art style is once again something that immediately
makes you think Cartoon Network. Appropriate
to the likewise unrealistic story itself, the art is very much cartoony and
fantastical. Even so, it still retains a
level of artistic value, just far more on the whimsical side of things in the
way of appearance. It’s a very different
style, but good artwork nonetheless.
I’m not entirely sure where exactly this fits into the show
and whether it matters if you’ve watched it yet. With the overall irrationality of everything I’ve
seen in the comic, I doubt it does much if at all. The one thing I imagine you might benefit
from is a potentially better introduction of the brothers and how this came to
be. If you want a purely silly book to
read just for the fun of it, this is a good title, otherwise many might put
this in the pass category.
