Fiction Squad 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

Fablewood is a pretty dangerous place, but no area is more dangerous than the City of Rimes, deep in the heart of the Children's Realm. After transferring in from the realm of Mystery, a failed detective from an unfinished prose novel, Frankie Mack, is about to uncover a conspiracy that could unmake storytelling itself. After Humpty Dumpty is pushed to crack and Jack (of Jack and Jill) goes AWOL, Frankie and his partner, Simple Simon, are put on the case.

One would think that it’d be nearly impossible for me to miss any awesome Kickstarters.  With so many though, it’s bound to happen, and I’ve let more slip by than I’d like to admit.  Case in point, I missed out on BOTH of the Fairy Quest ones* (which I absolutely have to grab now), as well as for this new spinoff Fiction Squad.  Luckily, I still got to enjoy the first issue, even if I don’t have it in hand.  Or with the cool exclusive cover.

I love anything that has its roots in fairy tales, so this was an immediate interest for me.  Based on the Fablewood world, this looks to specifically follow the adventures of realm transferee Frankie Mack.  That in itself is one of the things that I adored about this universe, is the multiple genre realms that are tied in together.  Now that he’s in the City of Rimes, Frankie finds himself having to solve the crimes involving beloved fairy tales and their characters.  First on the list in this issue is who assaulted Humpty Dumpty, and he hopes to crack this case quickly.  Egg pun included free of charge.

Right from the cover, all the way through to the very end, the art is just spectacular.  I always appreciate when a book consistently has good artwork that mirrors the cover and grabs me right away.  The illustrations are so full of life, and the colors – wow the colors are just fantastic.  If the premise of these books wasn’t enough to sell me and make me want to get the first two volumes, the art did the job.

I can’t sell up this book enough.  If you also dropped the ball like I did and let Fairy Quest slip by, go out and grab it like I intend to.  In the mean time, this is totally a great way to break into the Fablewood setting and is well worth picking up right away.

*in my defense, I think I actually saw the second one but just couldn't spare the cash at the time.
