Unseen Justice

Welcome to my first serious look at comics in more years than I care to recall.

First off, I quickly realised that I'm not the target audience. Unseen Justice is a look inside the harsh realities of El Malvado, a fictional American corrections facility, through the eyes of former Marine Sniper, now Corrections Officer (CO) Wyatt Stone. It's definitely aimed at those with a stance somewhat to the right of centre and definitely graphic enough that parents should read through before turning over to their kids. Some geographic details appear to be either accidentally or deliberately wrong or misleading, but that may be explained in future issues.

CO Stone has some issues, let's be clear about that. He's haunted by the ghost of his Sniper Team partner who died on their last mission and occasionally returns to offer advice. He's plagued by the legend of his father, who is apparently a resident hero to the local law enforcement community...and who may have some dark secrets of his own. On top of that, everyone he works with seems to have a reason to have a beef with him, even if it's just being the new guy.

The story moves along at a good clip, filling in the pieces as it goes, but definitely dangling plenty of loose threads to be followed up on later. The art is clean and well done with crisp lines and great colouring, which is a big part of what separates comics from novels with pictures. There is quite a bit of product placement and sponsorship, but that may be a new reality in comics. At least the sponsor pages were kept to the back so the story flowed cleanly.

While it's not my preferred style when it comes to comics, being more of a scifi/superhero fan in this medium, it is well done overall and its intended audience will likely enjoy it.
