Zenescope Reaches Major Milestone!

Posted by Katie on 3:06 PM

ZENESCOPE ENTERTAINMENT RELEASES LANDMARK ISSUE THIS WEDNESDAY!!! Grimm Fairy Tales #100

For an independent comic book publisher, getting to issue #50 is a milestone.  Getting to issue #100 is a LANDMARK!   Zenescope Entertainment, started in a garage by two Philly guys in 2005, has grown into a Top 10 Publisher with myriad fairy tales, horror, and fantasy titles plus working relationships with the biggest writers and artists in the business.

“It’s hard for me to believe we are getting ready to publish our 100th issue of Grimm Fairy Tales. It seems like not that long ago we publishing issue #1 and then trying to figure out how we were going to find enough fairy tales to make it to issue #25. It’s been a blast writing and planning the series and seeing how it has evolved over the last eight years. As excited as I am to be publishing issue #100, I’m even more excited for the direction the series is going to take in #101. It’s going to be a great jumping on point for new readers and I think current fans are going to love it even more. The best way I  can describe it is Harry Potter meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
- Joe Brusha, Zenescope co-founder and co-writer of GFT #100

“The fact that we’ve hit an issue #100 is such a great feeling and it proves that we have a dedicated and loyal fan base. We’re looking forward to really blowing readers away with both the artwork and story.”
- Ralph Tedesco, Zenescope co-founder and co-writer of GFT #100

The LANDMARK issue of one of the hottest indie comics of the past decade has arrived! It all began with Sela Mathers, the Guardian of the Nexus, a woman tasked with teaching misguided humans right from wrong. But Sela’s struggles, her ups and downs, and the effects of those she’s helped and those she’s lost to darkness will all culminate in this epic 100th issue! Realm Wars Blast #1

Posted by Katie on 3:43 PM

“This is a series that fans can’t afford to miss. Not only is it the culmination of the Age of Darkness storyline, but the fate of all the characters in the Grimm Universe is at stake and no one is safe. There will be a lot of twists and turns before the end and not everyone is going to survive the series. It’s going to be an exciting and surprising ride.”
- Joe Brusha, writer and co-creator

“Realm War is a must read for fans who've been enjoying all of the Age of Darkness releases. Grimm 100 ends on such a great cliffhanger, you'll definitely want to know where it goes from there and how the Age of Darkness story will end!”

- Ralph Tedesco, co-creator

Hit List #3

Posted by Katie on 8:00 AM

The hit list grows as more members of the Brown House Bishops fall to a mysterious crew of assassins. But a monkey wrench is thrown into the mix as Rian continues to play with fire. The acclaimed, heart-pounding, fast-paced action/thriller series from Zenescope Entertainment continues!

So, despite jumping into the middle of the series, it’s a pretty good read.  Billionaire Jordan Bale, has taken a few hits to his secret operation, but that’s not about to put a stop to his quest for vengeance against the Brown House Bishops.  Although, with Rian starting to slip-up, Jordan isn’t entirely sure this operation can go off without a hitch, despite Cody vouching for her.  Now the mercs are brought together to form a single strike force, but will they be able to work together?  Ralph Tedesco has really outdone himself on this one.  It reads like a TV action-drama and really sucks you into the story.  This is definitely one series I would pick up.

The writing by Mr. Tedesco is what made this issue.  I love the grittiness that the characters give off and how they each have their own sordid past, especially Rian apparently.  This is one of, if not the most realistic story that Zenescope has put out.  No powers or costumes, or supervillains, just a group of hired guns out to stop a criminal organization.  The artwork by Sami Kivela is just superb.  I mean everything looks gorgeous and it really brings the whole book together.  I’ve enjoyed this issue so much, that I’m thinking of running out and grabbing the previous two books, just so I get the whole story before the end of the series.  So, if you haven’t already picked up 1 and 2, go do that and definitely grab this one as well.

The only downside to this issue is that there’s only two more installments in the whole series.  Sure you don’t want the story to drag, but it sucks that it’s ending so soon as well.  I guess once this story comes to a close, we can all hope that Ralph is hard at work, bringing us a sequel to such a fine piece literature.

And there you have it, a no-holds barred showdown between Jordan Bale and Brown House is underway.  If Cody can keep Rian in line then this should go down without a hitch, but we all know that things never go that smoothly.  So, be sure to pick up a copy of Hit List issue 3 because if you don’t, this is one list you definitely don’t want to be on.  I’ve heard Will is a pretty good shot, just saying.  For more info on where to find this issue, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Grimm Fairy Tales: Different Seasons Vol. 3

Posted by Katie on 5:00 AM

Merriment and mischief continue in this third volume of holiday one-shots from Zenescope Entertainment.  Here you’ll find tales of danger, deceit and the uncouth effects of greed, as well as an epic volleyball game.  Written by the likes of Ralph Tedesco, Joe Brusha and Raven Gregory, this is certainly not one to be missing from your collection.  With that said, there are quite a few issues to cover this time around, so let’s get this review going.

This volume collects the 2010 Halloween and Holiday Specials, as well as the 2013 Valentine’s and St. Patrick’s one-shots and the 2012 Swimsuit Special.  Now, not entirely certainly sure how all these fit together story-wise, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of putting together what was available and not overloading this volume with a ton of Halloween and Holiday Specials.  With that said, there’s a whole plethora of demonic goodness throughout these stories.  You’ve got vampires, Krampus, leprechauns and dark spawn, so a little something for everyone.  What’s cool about these one-shots are that they kind of give the reader a closer look at the true meaning of a Holiday, or of the choices a person can make.  Brings it back to how the Grimm Fairy Tales series started, giving the reader a lesson and providing some introspection.  However, they’re not without their fair share of violence and T & A, so you won’t feel so bad about yourself when reading these.  Not that you should, but I think you know what I mean.

Focusing first on the writing, all around stellar job.  I mean, how can you go wrong with Ralph Tedesco, Joe Brusha, Raven Gregory and Pat Shand all lending their pens to these issues?  These guys know their stuff and that’s part of the reason Zenescope is still in business (I think you know what the other part is).  Raven gave us a great Halloween Special, takes a crack at all of the vampire stereotypes and gives use something a little unexpected.  If you hate Twilight, you’ll love this issue.  For the 2010 Holiday Special, Ralph, Joe and Raven really get into the true meaning of Christmas and try to make the world a better place, in their own special way.  I really liked how they were able to interconnect all of the little sub-stories within this book.  Nice way of getting a different perspective to the overall plot.

The Valentine’s one-shot provided a great back-up story to the Grimm Universe and answered a question or two for the long-time reader.  This issue fleshes out one of the main characters more and provides her with a bit more depth.  Pat really pulled through with both the 2013 St. Patrick’s Day and 2012 Swimsuit specials.  The St. Patrick’s Day one-shot was another issue of interconnecting stories and brought to light one of man’s greatest failings, while the Swimsuit Special was a change of pace, compared to Pat’s usual fair.  I mean Robyn is so bad-ass that she wouldn’t even come play volleyball in a story written by her series’ author.  So, much talent in one book, it’s hard to believe it doesn’t explode on contact.

Which leads us to the art aspect of this collection, a wide variety of styles and looks that it’s hard sometimes to read the print without staring at the pages for hours.  Artists like Marcio Abreu and Alfred Trujillo really give the pages the flare that pulls you into a story and just locks you in.  The ones that really got me were the pages from the 2010 Halloween Special and the 2013 Valentine’s one-shot.  A story which involves pages of sexy, female vampires is always a plus for me and the Valentine’s one-shot really delivered with its 90’s style superhero look.  A look that’s always been a favorite of mine.

A few things struck me as a little off in this volume, the main thing being the short story in the 2012 Swimsuit Special.  Like I said, this is definitely a break from the norm for Pat, and to me it showed.  Although a nice light-hearted story for a change, it felt a little too cheesy.  Some of the dialogue just felt forced in areas and too many attempts by the villains to be funny.  It was a little rough getting through, but great to see Pat expanding his genres.  Other things that caught my attention was the artwork for some of the stories, especially in the Holiday Special.  I wouldn’t say it was all around bad, but it wasn't really my cup of tea either.  Perhaps there’s a certain charm that I’m not seeing, but to re-iterate, it’s just not for me.

The Different Seasons series of trade paper-backs is a great collection of all of the extra-long stories that they couldn’t quite fit into the trades of the main series.  Volume three delivers the chills and thrills while keeping with the holiday spirit.  Despite a few hiccups, I would recommend this for anyone wanting to expand their Zenescope collection, or for some good ‘ol fashioned holiday cheer.  So, pick up the third collection of Different Seasons, otherwise you may find the Krampus at your door.  For more info about this trade paper-back, visit the Zenescope website, or the Zenescope Facebook page.

Zenescope Entertainment’s Enters the Age of Darkness

Posted by Katie on 12:36 PM

November, 2013 — Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans for a new event that will become part of the long running hit comic book series, Grimm Fairy Tales. The event is called Age of Darkness and will involve most of Zenescope’s Grimm Universe spinoff series as well as its flagship title, Grimm Fairy Tales as it approaches its landmark 100th issue, due out July 2014.

“Everything we’ve ever done in the Grimm Fairy Tales has led up to this event and the Grimm Universe will be forever changed by this.” states Zenescope President, Joe Brusha. “We’re thrilled that this series has lasted so long and we’re even more excited to see it evolve into something bigger now with the Age of Darkness event.”

Age of Darkness will first hit the Grimm Universe starting in two spinoff titles: Quest and Code Red. But 2014 will get more intense as the Age of Darkness descends upon multiple Grimm Fairy Tales series including Robyn Hood, Neverland, Inferno and Wonderland: Clash of Queens.

“We’re definitely going to shock some fans as we lead up to #100.” says Editor-in-Chief Ralph Tedesco “But Age of Darkness is not being done simply for shock value, we want this ride that our fans have taken with us for the past eight years to really pay off.”

Upcoming Age of Darkenss titles are currently available for pre-order in Diamond Previews, which is out now. Check back on the Zenescope blog, http://blog.zenescope.com/ and follow Zenescope on Facebook at www.facebook.com/zenescope and on Twitter @Zenescope for updates.

Zenescope Entertainment Announces its HIT LIST

Posted by Katie on 10:25 AM

Zenescope Entertainment will be publishing a new original action-thriller comic book series entitled HIT LIST. Zenescope co-founder and Editor-in-Chief, Ralph Tedesco (Grimm Fairy Tales, Salem’s Daughter), will be penning the series which is a slight departure from the mostly supernatural and horror fare Tedesco has co-created with writing partner and Zenescope President, Joe Brusha.

Hit List is a series about an underground crew of professional killers funded by a wealthy entrepreneur. In the first series arc, the collection of assassins attempts to methodically take out members of a dangerous white supremacist gang that deals in human trafficking.

“The story follows an ensemble of very different characters who happen to be paid killers. What if there was someone rich and ballsy enough to put together such a crew because idealistically he wants to make the world safer? I thought it would be fun to explore what could happen and, more importantly, what could go wrong.” says Tedesco “The story is very fast-paced and the action is in-your-face violent. There’s very little downtime in this series which will be a blast for readers.”

Zenescope will also be making Hit List a point of interest during San Diego Comic Con next month with a fun “Hit List” campaign that will allow convention-goers a chance to win prizes at Zenescope Booth 2301 while participating in an interactive experience taking place on the convention floor throughout Comic Con weekend.

The first issue of Hit List is available for pre-order in the July 2013 edition of Diamond Previews and will be released both in print and digitally this September. The series will also offer special Retailer Incentive Exclusive covers for issues #1 through #5 illustrated by star pinup artist, Elias Chatzoudis. These limited edition exclusives will feature Zenescope’s popular “Grimm Fairy Tales” characters as assassins. For more information on these limited covers contact Zenescope’s sales department at DaveF@zenescope.com

Posted by Katie on 1:57 PM

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans for a line of digital-first releases that will become available in April of 2013. Zenescope will also offer continuations of previous published titles that will return in a digital first format.
Said Zenescope Editor-in-Chief Ralph Tedesco, “We’ve spent several years growing the Zenescope brand but digital publishing gives us more flexibility and allows us to step outside of the horror and fantasy genres and bring some other titles we’re passionate about into the mix. And we can offer these books at a lower cost to readers.”
Zenescope is planning to offer most #1 issues of its digital first titles free of charge for one week upon release and for between $0.99 to $1.99 thereafter. Here’s a list if the planned digital first releases for 2013:

C2E2 Day 2 : A Thousand Miles (or how far I walked!)

Posted by Katie on 12:44 PM

Saturday in the park...no wait. I seem to have the inner dj turned on and I was never in a park this weekend. Let's just start over, shall we? Saturday was what I tend to call omg busy. I was up by 9 and considering Friday was tiring and I didn't get to bed til 2am, I was concerned with that. I did the usual post-waking things..showered, dressed, ate a banana and then I was off to the convention center!

Yet again, I caught the shuttle to the airport and then it was off to the train! This time, I wasn't alone but got to spend the entire ride with Phil (dad), Connor (son - about 13) and this adorable little girl whose name escapes me, but she had a stuffed wolf named Sammy. Phil was in town from Indianapolis and the kids were up from Kentucky for the weekend. We had a great time talking and hanging out. So great that I gave them one of my cards and Connor said he was going to add me on Facebook. I hope that they do. I really liked them.

Then, it was off to the next shuttle. This time, it was totally packed. In fact, about 30 people were left standing on the curb. Yeesh! I got to the convention center and it was absolutely packed! There were people everywhere which is great for the convention, to be sure. I had intended on taking a lot of pictures but I only had 2 hands and carrying my camera in one of them got old pretty quick and I'm weird and don't like wearing it around my neck. I always feel like a tourist and on a day where I'm trying to be professional, tourist just doesn't blend. I did take a few right at the beginning though...

Then, it was up to the 3rd floor where it was even more jam packed with people! I stopped by Big Dog Ink to say hi and then started making my way around the exhibitor booths. This was my very first time saying, "Hi, my name is Katrina and I'm here looking for new people and companies to work with." I don't know if it was the press badge or the super cheeriness, but it seemed to work! I had a great time talking with people and quite a few of them either handed me their "babies" to review or promised to send me digital copies.  At one table, I bumped into Ralph Tedesco  and you know dang well that I made sure to give him my card. I also asked him about a couple of titles and if they had them with them. Not only did they have them, but he encouraged me to stop by and he'd *give* me them for Roger to review (they're children's titles).

It took me probably a few more hours, but I did find my way to their table and got to meet Stephen, head marketing god for Zenescope. It was nice to put a face with a name and hopefully, he felt the same way. While standing there, I kept answering questions for others coming up to the table. I can't help it. I'm a helper and I really do love their product. Who knows, maybe if I'm helpful enough, they'll hire me to do something..lol! Ralph came back to the table while I was standing there and between my love of their books and his generosity, I think I walked away with 5 trade paperbacks for myself and 3 trades and a preview issue of Jurassic Strike Force for Roger. These guys might not have given me much re-posting love before this but they sure treated me well that day. I'm looking forward to continuing my relationship with them.

I think it must have taken me about 5 hours, but I did finish making my way around the exhibitor floor about 5:45pm and I went and hung out at the Big Dog Ink table. I hope it didn't bug Tom that I was hanging around, talking with Nei. I did spend some time pitching their books to people who came up and I did make at least one artist commission happen. I also took around some of their Vote Independent posters to a couple of other booths. I think it would be rather brilliant of them if they created postcard sized pieces for that campaign and considering I'll be hitting the Phoenix Comicon floor hard in another month, it'd be something I could hand out when I'm talking about it with other independent artists/companies. I wished more than once this past weekend that I had something like that with me.

Somewhere around 6:45, I decided I ought to head back to the hotel since nobody had extended me another dinner invite. Shuttle, train and shuttle later, I made my way into the room where I decided I just couldn't move another step unless I absolutely had to. So, in true fancy schmancy press/princess style, I called room service and had a lovely bed picnic while talking to Justin and Eric. Sleep ended up taking over (after these two old men fell asleep, I have to say..and it was 2 hours earlier for them!) and day 2 came to a close.

Scene: One tired girl curled up on a huge bed, drifting off to sleep with a smile on her face because people liked her and want to work with her...camera pans to see lots of comic books and other goodies from the day... *giggles*

For today, I leave you with a few more pictures...until tomorrow where I'll wrap up with Day 3!

Make sure you come back tomorrow to see what happens on Day 3 and how my gps showed me yet again how much she loves me!
