Pirate Eye: Exiled from Exile 4

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Face to face with his old foe at last, Smitty fights for his life and for his future. But Burroughs has very different plans for both.  The thrilling conclusion to this critically-acclaimed storyline!

There's nothing like the final showdown between two foes, especially when they both happen to be pirates.  Or, at least one of them used to be a pirate and that very fact has caused him nothing but problems.  He's managed to work his way out of them so far, but how is Smitty going to dig himself out this time in the fourth and final issue of Pirate Eye: Exiled from Exile?

After Smitty correctly manages to locate a secret cave that Burroughs has been hoarding gold in, he draws his old nemesis out.  In true pirate story style, the two prepare to enter a high seas battle with their ships.  When it is unexpectedly interrupted by cannon fire from another source, they end up facing off blade vs blade to end their long quarrel.

The series definitely packed in as much as it could for nice artwork in its ending issue.  Between the action on the water with the ships, and the sword fight finale, there was some awesome action visuals.  There was more of the unusually different art with some characters, but I just went with the flow and let it slide.

If you're looking for a cool pirate series to jump into, this is a pretty great choice.  It might serve you well to possibly grab the other books that came out before, but I think you'd be able to get by without.  Either way, this wouldn't be a bad mini series to add to your collection next time you're out.

Pirate Eye: Exiled from Exile 3

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 2:00 PM

Confounded at every turn, Smitty finds himself two steps behind Burroughs as their old rivalry reaches new heights of mutual hatred. As his options for survival and freedom dwindle, he'll have to learn to think like his greatest rival-and come to grips with how similar the two of them are.

The life of a pirate is not an existence that could be so easily given up without still dealing with some remnants of it later on.  It would have been hard enough to begin with, let alone trying to play both sides of the coin.  With problems both past and present all around, Smitty continues to claw his way out in part three of Pirate Eye: Exiled from Exile.

This next issue splits its time between the current situation between Smitty and Burroughs, as well as events from the past that help explain why.  Burroughs is not about to let Smitty off so easily, and uses all his connections and power to take him down.  Smitty, equally as resourceful, takes a gamble in his sticky situation in hopes of turning the tide in his favor.

There was some interesting illustration choices in this book that I had some trouble understanding.  The overall art style that we've seen prior was prominent, yet some characters had a strikingly different approach.  It wasn't bad by any means, just not something I quite understood.  Beyond that though, the artwork also featured some pretty neat color use in some pages.

With this offshoot coming to a close soon, the story is bound to get even more intense in the final issue.  It's been a cool mini series, and one that is a pretty decent way to check out Pirate Eye as a whole.  You'd be a bit better off having read the other books, but even if you haven't, is still a decent book to check out.

Pirate Eye: Exiled from Exile 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

Smitty has lost everything twice-over, and now nothing is out of bounds as he desperately seeks a score large enough to buy his way back to safety. His former crewmate, now a feared captain, means to ensure Smitty's continued misery, instead. They can't both succeed.

One has to wonder why anyone would ever say "it's the pirate's life for me".  Yes, there's the adventure and the treasure.  But there's even more of the risks and the double crossing.  I would have to imagine that's at least partly why that life is in the past for our former pirate as we explore the second issue of Pirate Eye: Exiled from Exile.

Now that Smitty has secured "safer" passage at the expense of a friend, it's time to start formulating plan.  It is surprisingly less for revenge and more for making sure the bastard pirate from his past doesn't come after him again.  Time is already against him and the crew he's sailing with, and Smitty will employ every trick he knows to gain an advantage.  From the looks of it, he will need them.

There isn't too much of anything major different here in the art from book one.  The artwork itself is the same as it has been from all the issues I've read, which isn't a bad thing for consistency.  I will mention that a select number of panels were much brighter than most that came before and that was a nice change of pace.

Although you should at least have read the first in this part of the series, that's about the only requirement for prior knowledge.  While not completely your typical pirate story, there are enough of the elements there to have that same appeal.  So, grab yourself a bottle of whatever you fancy and sit down with this tale.

Pirate Eye: Exiled from Exile 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

An old enemy exposes a secret that forces Smitty to flee for his life. Now, with a price on his head on land and at sea, Smitty will have to survive long enough to find out what went wrong, how to make it right, and who is responsible.

Ah, back to the high seas and the unforgiving life during the time of pirates.  It's no wonder there's an ongoing battle between pirates and ninjas for popularity, both are awesome.  I don't know that I could pick honestly.  Fortunately, I get to read books for both, including the first in the new Pirate Eye mini series Exiled from Exile.

To no surprise, Smitty is once again up to his eyes in trouble and will use every trick up his dirty sleeve to get out of it.  Playing all sides will catch up to you eventually, as he finds out someone did not much care for his typical game of deceit and now has a bounty on him.  Employing the help of a fellow "law man", he manages to squeeze his way out for now, backstabbing him in the process of course.

The previous style of artwork is brought over into this new expansion for the series.  A bit rough on the edges, and with a darker feel to all the colors, it is befitting to this manner of story.  Even with that looser, grittier art, it does not fall short of visually telling the story.  Like I said, it fits a pirate story and I can appreciate that they use it here.

If you've never read any of Pirate Eye, worry not, for you can still jump into it here without any problem.  Even the last trade I read was pretty much a collection of one shots and followed it easily.  Regardless, this is still a great series that most anyone can get into and is worth checking out.
