Mister X: Razed 4

A disappearing skyscraper and a crime lord are revealed in the retrofuturistic metropolis of Radiant City! Mister X, allegedly the city’s mysterious creator, must expose those who threaten his city—but can he do it before they silence him?

With the final book of this mini-series came one of those "oh now I get it moments".  I suppose I should have expected it going into the fourth and likely final issue.  Regardless, the three previous issues all came together just as they should have in number four of Mister X: Razed.

Given that this is the final book of the mini-series, there was just one singular story rather than a split.  It takes separate elements that were seen before, including the missing building, Rosetta, and the magician, and all glue them together.  By the end, you get a much better feeling of how all these stories somehow fit in this mysterious title.

This ending chapter comes together in the effective and appropriate artistic method we've seen thus far.  While some other kinds of stories might work, the noir genre definitely benefits most from these kinds of visuals.  All in all, I thought it was good work and was pleased with the choice to go with this style.

I certainly had my share of difficulty trying to get through this series, but it turned out ok by the end.  My suggestion is to grab all four and sit down with them in one go, as it will make it easier to grasp.  These books might not be up everyone's alley, but wouldn't be a bad way to see if Mister X is something you'd like to read more of.

Mister X: Razed 3

The third issue of Mister X: Razed, by legendary comics creator Dean Motter, is here! In the retrofuturistic metropolis of Radiant City, its mysterious creator, Mister X, is trapped in a dangerous illusion that once broke a master magician, and a zombie invasion threatens the city!

Moving forward through this next part of the series, I wasn't sure if we'd see new mini stories or some new ones.  Either would have been perfectly suitable with how the first two ended up going.  After finishing up issue three of Mister X: Razed, it looks like I was right on both accounts.

The first half of this next issue in Radiant City shows us Mister X working late at night, ending up trapped in an old magician's trick.  This dangerous contraption leads to a flashback telling of its history, and the current status of the magician and his former assistant.  The second part of the book goes back to Rosetta Stone and her investigation of supposed zombie thieves.  Or so they'd have you think, as we find out just what they are and who they work for.

Our familiar, classic noir art style that we've seen thus far is still used here as you'd imagine.  It once again features more color than the first issue, but still a simpler look.  It almost gives you an idea of reading old publications that would have been like this which is pretty neat.

While I'm still not the biggest fan of this series, it is not at all a bad one.  Whether or not having no exposure to the main series is a hindrance is hard to say.  I have a bit of trouble at first, but once it moves forward, it's a pretty decent book to have read.

Mister X: Razed 2

The second issue of legendary comics creator Dean Motter’s Mister X: Razed is here! In the retrofuturistic metropolis of Radiant City, the city’s mysterious designer, Mister X, becomes entangled in a crime that defies reason: a gigantic skyscraper has been kidnapped and is held for ransom—but why?

With the first issue being my first venture in this title, I was curious what would be in store in the next.  As long as it's been around, I had never even heard of it to be honest.  Now that I've at least put one issue in my list, the second Mister X: Razed can now join.

As was done in the opening issue, and quite possibly following suit with the title as a whole, there were two separate stories within.  Story one was an interesting tale of one of the city's most prominent buildings being kidnapped (yes, an entire building is taken for ransom).  Reporter Rosetta Stone leads up the other, with her on the case for a story about a heist involving zombies (also quite a wild premise).

Unlike the first issue, the artwork here is not grayscale with just a splash of red.  It still has that old school, noir style to it which it's presumably been known for all these years.  As I've never read much of anything like this, it's a neat look that is like reading classic stories from the era.

To be totally honest, I'm not sure how I feel about Mister X:Razed, or Mister X as a whole.  Without any background on the older books, I don't know if I'm missing information that would help me follow along.  That aside, it's still a interesting series to read, even if I don' t necessarily seek out further issues.

Mister X: Razed 1

Visionary creator Dean Motter returns with a new masterpiece of retrofuturism! Radiant City is a metropolis as mysterious as its alleged creator—Mister X. What should’ve improved the city left it cursed. Now, Mister X must watch over the City of Dreams turned City of Nightmares, keeping vigil during a holiday season that’s anything but jolly.

Let me start off firstly by saying this is another case of me being out of the loop on a comic.  Again, it's nearly impossible to catch every comic, unless you've got all the time and money to do so.  Either way, I once again dove into this new-to-me title, Mister X: Razed, curious to see what was before me.

So, not knowing anything about Mister X, I wasn't sure how this new title in the series fit in.  The way this one is approached though, is two short stories built into one issue.  Both of them feature a very film noir style, full of all the dark, old school crime drama that fits that bill.  If you've never experienced any of that, this is a really cool way to check some out.

In that light, or lack there of, the art used in the book is precisely what this kind of title should have used.  Everything is done in an almost exclusively monochrome manner, with some red thrown in there for flavor.  I'm not sure if the rest of the series used this same style, but either way, the mixing in of red is quite appropriate to the season of the story.

As another ongoing series I've just now broken into, I certainly appreciate my first peak into the world of Mister X.  I would imagine that long time fans will be grateful for another piece in the series.  Even being new to it, I can see myself reading more and would say it's worth checking out, especially for those who've already read previous issues.
