The Witcher series of comic books is based on a series of Polish short stories from the 1990s.  There are also Witcher video games.

Previous to this title, I hadn’t read or played any Witcher titles, so I came into this with no prior knowledge of the series, characters, or events. As such, I did feel that I was lacking some knowledge of the world, and of prior events. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if I’d come into it with at least some knowledge of the series.

That said, it’s solid writing. It has humor, some snappy dialogue (and some that is a little groan-worthy, but it’s high fantasy so I’ll forgive that as a genre trope), and good art. The art style is unique, with muted colors, and I felt that it fit the tone of the story very well.

Since this is part one of five, it does leave you wanting a continuation, and that’s a successful writing ploy that has been used advantageously.

Overall I’d recommend this to people with prior knowledge, but any fantasy fan can probably grasp enough of what’s happening to enjoy it.
