Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard Vol.3 #1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

Following two award-nominated volumes, once again, mice of all furs and trades have gathered at the June Alley Inn to swap tales of courage, adventure, and craftsmanship. The storytellers can’t help but try to outdo one another, as the mouse who tells the best tale gets their bar tab cleared.

As I've said in prior reviews, I'm always a bit hesitant to crack open a later volume of a title.  Don't get me wrong, it's not because I don't want to read it, I just worry that it won't have the same impact without knowing earlier content.  That being said, in the case of the first book in volume 3 of Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard, it didn't seem to be much of a worry.

My eventual relief for starting this series at volume 3 is how this book was set up.  From the look of it, Mouse Guard is a regular collection of individual stories told by various members of the aforementioned title.  In this particular issue, the group of mice here are weaving their tales of deeds and heroics in a contest for the favorite getting their tab waived.

Not only does David Petersen do a fantastic job of writing great stories within the story, he provides us with a great selection of superb artwork.  It struck me right away with similarities to the feel of art like that of Wind in the Willows, which I think is just right for the book.  The style has a fantastical bedtime story appeal and is such a wonderful way to draw this series.

I would have to think that the prior volumes for Mouse Guard were just as excellent as this one.  This is a perfect kind of comic for families to enjoy together.  My hope is, that you don't need to have read any beforehand to fully enjoy it.  Either way, I would suggest grabbing this and the books prior for a nice session of reading.
