Garfield #33: His 9 Lives Part 1

“Garfield: His 9 Lives, Part 1.” The journey begins with “Cave Cat,” as David DeGrand (Spongebob Comics) takes us back to Garfield’s first life, during the earliest days of life on Earth! Then, Kari Smith (Plume) illustrates “King Cat,” as we see how Garfield got down in Ancient Egypt.

I would imagine that most comic readers can think back on some of their first books and smile.  It was a simpler time growing up and for me it was things like Casper, Archie and one of my favorites, Garfield.  Many years later, everyone’s favorite lasagna loving feline is still going.  With the miniseries aptly titles Garfield #33: His 9 Lives, we get even more to keep that love strong.

This was a really fun concept for a new Garfield title, with him taking us through his 9 lives, or reincarnations if you will.  Starting way back in the beginning with Cave Cat, we see his very first experience with lasagna that started it all.  Moving forward to ancient Egypt and the days of Gar-ho-tep, we see him thoroughly enjoying being worshipped like a god.  Not all that different from how he sees himself today right?

Although the colors are definitely brighter and the art as a whole cleaner, the appearance of Garfield is one you can’t change too much.  He is easily recognized, along with other characters from the cast.  Coming from an era where comic art didn’t need all the glamour to hold your attention, that feel is maintained here with just a little extra.

This is a book that was easily an automatic interest for me as I’ve loved Garfield since I was a child.  Newer generations may not have that same attachment, but hopefully will still appreciate the humor of the title.  Fun for readers of absolutely any age, I think this is a really good book to enjoy for the short run while it lasts.
