The two greatest science-fiction properties of all time
cross over for the first time in history! When the Federation's most terrifying

The Good
The
Crossover/history - I’m not a Star Trek fan, probably never will be, but even I
got excited when I 1st heard about this almost 9 months ago. For avid SciFi fans, the idea of this
crossover is close to epic.
With each having been around for such a long
time, it is hard to believe that it would take all the way to the 11th
Doctor and Captain Picard to finally meet. The books do pay tribute to past
icons of each series.
The villain story line - So many
possible choices of villains, I wasn’t geeking out when I heard it was going to
be the Cybermen and the Borg. But it is working well. Not being a Trekkie, I
just pictured the Borg to be like the Cybermen. But their differences are very
interesting. It is really great to see the two interact.
With that said, the series isn’t
over and I would very much love to see another make an appearance- Daleks
anyone?
Styles
of art -. I know how difficult it is to draw specific human faces. For the
majority of the book, I can tell who each character is, even when they are just
in the back ground. Also, the art style
changes when a different time period is shown.
It works really well and I found that it does keep the flow going.

The Bad
The
story progression - As much fun as it is to see these characters all together,
they’ve only left the Enterprise once so far. The 1st four issues went
like this- back story, back story, back story, 2nd to last page is a
set up, and cliffhanger last page! Someone fire a photon already. Issue 5 was more
back story but, since I didn’t know the Picard into a Borg story line, I found
that helpful. As much as I’m loving the idea of this crossover, I’m really
wanting things to actually happen.
The
colors - Painting is hard. Consistency is even harder. I completely understand
that. But what I can’t fathom is when big details are forgotten/ignored. Examples
being someone’s eyebrows going from a light grey in one
panel to a thick black in the very next, or someone’s skin tone changing. They
are too apparent not to notice. Those mistakes break into the flow of the story
reading. And honestly, big mistakes like that can be so irritating.
Summary
This
series is not always what I was expecting to see, but very enjoyable and fun to
read- even though I’m still waiting for “action”. I can’t wait for the next issue. It really is
a big fun power struggle of diplomacy, violence, bias, hope, fear,
extermination, and yes, assimilation.
I believe this series works best
with fans of the show. There is too much back story going on that, if you’re just
picking up this book, wouldn’t be all that intriguing for an every issue basis.
However, even just being a fan of Doctor Who, this series is fun. Probably even
better if you’re a fan of both shows. The creative team has done a good job at
capturing beloved mannerisms and the villains are true to form. We see lots of crossovers but this one just
seems natural and is working really well.
