Austin in Review : The Bakery Connection

Posted by Katie on 2:04 PM

As some of you may have read, we here at Geek-o-Rama tried something new for our last convention. We hooked up with a local bakery to bring goodies to our friends who were working their hearts out down at the convention center. As part of that partnership/trying something new, we decided to make sure that we told you how it all worked out and whether or not this is something that we'll try to do for future events.

So, how did it work out? It was a learning experience, for sure. There were moments when I wondered if I had been out of my mind to try to add one more thing into the busiest day of the con, but we made it work in the end. We received 10 bright pink mini bakery boxes filled with an assortment of mini chocolate cupcakes (with seriously cute little decorations on them), mini scones and mini tarts. Due to the insanity, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the boxes or their contents, but I did snag this photo of what the pumpkin tarts looked like from the bakery's Facebook page.

The next day, I went back around to the various tables to get their reactions. Everyone that I spoke to said a huge thank you for the surprise. One guy even ran out from behind the table to give me a huge hug.  They loved that someone brought them food on the day where sometimes they don't get the chance to go to the bathroom, let alone take the time to stand in line for food. The response to the treats was really positive. Different people had their favorites but everyone enjoyed them and that's what matters. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to try more than the little pumpkin tart myself. For me, it was a lovely 2 bite treat at the end of a very, very long day.

Overall, I'm calling this experiment a success. We've already been approached by another bakery who wants to get in on the action if we repeat this next year in Austin. I'm pretty excited about expanding this out to the new friends that were made.

If you're interested in checking out Sugar3, they are currently open 3 days a week. I would suggest that you stop in on any of those days to see what the baker has whipped up. Saturdays are bread days so if you're looking for something alone those lines, that's your day. They are located at 829 Briarwood Lane in Austin, TX.

Their store hours are:
Thursday - Noon to 4:30 p.m.
Friday - 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Saturday - 9:00 a.m. to Noon

Keep your eyes here as I continue to post about Austin in Review..with more dining suggestions and what the con was like for me this year.

Austin Connection

Posted by Katie on 5:06 PM

With every convention that we attend come new connections. Honestly, it's one of my favorite parts of being a part of the geek-o-verse. I get to meet some amazing people who do amazing things. I'm a people person and love the social aspects of what I do.

One of the connections that we've been lucky enough to make is with a fantastic little bakery out of Austin. Ok, I confess that this is a connection that was made, in part, over 15 years ago. A long, long time ago back when computers had black and green screens and before Google was born, there were these things called telnet talkers. Don't believe me? Well, you can use that young whipper snapper Google to check out what I say. Well, anyway, way back then, I met this guy named Shawn. He became one of my closest friends. Long story, short..Shawn marries Sun. Sun opens bakery. We all get delicious goodness next weekend!

That's right, Geek-o-Rama has partnered up with Sugar for next weekend's comicon! What does that mean exactly? Well, the lovely folks at the bakery will actually be providing us with delicious goodies for our breakfast, but not only that, they'll also be providing goody boxes, courtesy of Sugar and Geek-o-Rama, for select vendors at the show. If this works out well, we'll be looking for other small companies to work with in the future.

Want some goodies of your own and live in the Austin area? Give them a call today to find out what delights she has in store. Want some goodies of your own and will be visiting? Call and ask for Sun. I'm sure that orders and deliveries can be arranged. You can't go wrong with home baked goodness and Sugar3 not only has the best geeky bakery name, but also some of the best baked goods you'll ever taste.
