Zoe Out of Time #2

Posted by Katie on 10:12 AM

It is the year 2050, and rebellious sixteen year old, Zoe Black, just stole her famous father's prototype time travel device, the Kronos Traveller—risking her life to journey back to the year 1990 all to meet legendary rock singer, Trent Darrow, of the band Rebel Lions.  Having arrived in the middle of their concert, Zoe quickly finds herself in more trouble than she could ever have imagined...

With the exciting first issue, the groundwork was laid for another time traveling journey.  Our typical, unruly teenager found herself stuck in a not so typical situation after landing in the past.  Now she comes face to face with the very person that inspired this adventure in the first place.  The question is, what will she do now that she’s there?  Zoe Out of Time 2 seeks to answer this, and possibly offer up even more questions.

So, what does happen when Zoe meets the blast from the past rocker of her dreams?  Awkward time traveler situations, love triangles and band drama.  Naturally.  Of course, you can’t have all this and not have something shady going on behind the scenes as well.  As comfortable as she seems to be, that’s not likely going to last very long.  Therein lies our new question to keep the reader curious – what threatens Zoe now, and why?

The beautiful artwork that we got to enjoy in the first issue keeps on going here in issue 2.  Although it’s a little more toned down without the futuristic setting, this does not at all detract from the overall quality of it.  We also don’t see that curiously prominent blue across most pages, although when we do, it sure does jump out at you.

So where do we go from here?  I still have a feeling we might see the traditional “time travel domino effect” soon.  Even if we don’t, the story is still staying interesting enough to keep me wanting more.  This is a series thus far is showing that it’s well worth the time to jump into, and I’d suggest taking the leap.

Zoe Out of Time

What happens when a time travel device falls into the hands of a rebellious, teenage girl? CHAOS!

The title to this pretty much gave away that it was going to involve something with time travel.  Or at least, it did to me anyways.  Then again, once you see the cover it’s all the more obvious.  Even so, I didn’t know exactly what direction Zoe Out of Time was going to go in specifically.  Lucky for me, it was a really fun one.  That is, assuming you can logically pair direction and time travel together.  Ok let’s not get into that discussion, how about we just move onto a review eh?

As a child who grew up in the 80s, I almost instinctively love anything time travel.  The story we have here is no exception, with our physics defying hero being a rebellious, but still lovable heroine.  As expected from a first issue, we mostly get some character buildup and background on this book’s version of time travel.  Once we get past that though, our lead character finds herself rather unexpectedly starting her trip through the fourth dimension.

The artwork that fills the pages of this sci-fi thrill ride is really quite beautiful.  Panel to panel we get sharp art backed by stunning color work.  The only thing I wonder about is whether there’s a reason behind it having a generally blue overtone to everything.  Not that it detracted from the quality of the work, it’s more just curiosity as to whether that had a purpose.

With my predisposition to love these kinds of stories, this one almost didn’t have to try to win me over.  Regardless of my love for time travel, it would have still done the job with the great story and wonderful art.  I’m more than interested in seeing what happens next, especially with where we left off.  I have a sneaking suspicion of where it might go next, but we’ll see.  Adventure awaits?  Only time will tell right?
