The Big Con Job 3

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

The crew is picked, and now the con is on. Just when the team thinks nothing can go wrong, reality sets in and tosses a monkey wrench their way!

Not every crew that makes up a heist team is going to be you're stereotypical lineup.  Then again, it's not exactly a common theme for the team to be robbing San Diego Comic Con.  Typical or not, the third issue of The Big Con Job is just as thrilling of a story.  I mean really, they're targeting SDCC.

With the crew now deciding to go through with this grand scheme, all of the details of just how it's going down are laid out.  Day one of the convention begins, and with the task not happening until Sunday, things are already getting shaky.  Nerves are kicking in, and one member already gets cold feet.  A heist specialist arrives to complete the roster, but with her reputation preceding her, the heat is already on.

The artwork for this series was already pretty solid right from the start.  One of the things I liked most was seeing conventions illustrated throughout the books.  Now that the convention has started, more of the cosplays and visuals of the con as a whole are popping up.  As I've never been to SDCC, and likely won't ever, it was really cool to see what it might just be like.

Before the plan is even going into effect, it's already getting tense and the difficulty is only increasing.  I'm really getting more involved with the story as the momentum is picking up.  The next issue is bound to get really exciting and you should join in on this as soon as possible.

The Big Con Job 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

While Blaze, Poach, Colin, and Hendrix debate whether robbing the Con is worth the risk, we meet two new disgruntled former stars. Madeleine “Maddie” Cannon shares her trailer with a dog on the set of a horrible sci-fi movie, and Jonnie Lao—Zhing Lee of TV’s Lotus Wind series—sits in as an advisor for the remake while hottie actor Billy Benton white-washes his film.

Heist movies as long as they're done right are always of interest to me.  I'm not sure I can recall any heist comics prior to this one though, so that was an immediate sell.  Going into the second issue of The Big Con Job, I couldn't wait to see more of this story unfold.

Our group of actors past their prime have had the seed planted in their heads for a heist, involving SDCC of all things.  Things are likely not going to get any easier for them, and so they move forward with consideration of the idea.  They call in a couple other friends in similar financial and career distress, and after discussing all the details, consideration changes to commitment.

As the first issue showed potential, the strong artwork has kept to that level.  While we haven't gotten to any possible content with some action, the story still moves along well visually.  One thing I enjoy oddly enough is seeing the convention scene illustrated, it just reminds me why I love them so much.

Now that we're really getting into the part of the story where it will open up, I can't wait to see what comes next.  This series definitely looks like it's going to be a great heist adventure in comic format.  I'll certainly be awaiting the next issue and would gladly suggest joining the ride while it's just starting.

The Big Con Job 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

After working the same convention circuit for many years, a group of flabby action heroes, aging sex symbols, and sci-fi bit players have become close friends as they watch their lines get shorter and their autographs get cheaper. That is, until they hire a cocky new booking agent who offers them their only chance at a comfortable retirement by robbing one of the largest cons in the country!

As big as stars can be in their prime, it is an unfortunate fact that not every one can ride that fame forever.  Granted, they will likely always have their hardcore fans, but just a handful of them can't pay the bills.  Desperation can get you do to some pretty crazy things, and that's what we're seeing in the first issue of The Big Con Job.

Anyone that has been to enough cons knows how varied lines for stars can be depending on their level of popularity.  As a group of aging actor friends are starting to feel the despair of dwindling fans and funds, they are all starting to wonder what to do next.  One of them takes an extreme measure, and in the aftermath, the rest of them come across a wild opportunity to set them on a path of wealth.  Or something worse.

The artwork throughout this starting issue is a good sign of what that component will add to the title.  Clean, strong illustrations combined with great colors made it just as fun to view as it was to read.  I personally thought it was a fun aspect to see how they drew the main characters in comparison to their younger selves.

This is a really great story that's been built so far.  If you've seen Galaxy Quest, take that and add in some heist for added flavor, you have this book.  The title almost gives it away if you think about it, but once you jump it that almost doesn't matter.  I'd really like to see where this goes and would suggest picking it up to do the same.
