Planet Gigantic 4

Valentina is reunited with MOTHER and together, along with Lyana and the rock-beast Ignatius, attempt a daring rescue of Yuri from within the dark heart of Castle Terror. Will they arrive in time? Or will the Queen steal his soul forever?  Find out in the epic conclusion: Apocalypse Neva!

We have reached the end of this first leg for the epic space adventure.  One of the things that made this more enjoyable is how very different it's been from any other sci-fi title I've seen.  As you'd expect from the finale of this opening arc, Planet Gigantic 4 went out with a bang.  I mean that literally as well, as you'll see at the end.

Now that Valentina and Lyana, along with their new companion Ignatius and "MOTHER" are free, it's time to go on a rescue mission.  They are in a race for time to find Yuri, as the evil Queen is planning to use her diabolical power stealing machine on him.  Once they finally locate him and face off against the Queen, they are met with a new unexpected foe in the process.

To further impress the reader with this closing chapter, the artwork really stepped it up all the way through.  Lots of powers, explosions, bright and vibrant colors everywhere.  You know, exactly how a thrilling sci-fi book should end it's first volume.  It left a good impression for sure, so it did it's job well.

This is probably one of my favorite sci-fi titles I've check out lately.  I really enjoyed how it mixed elements of both sci-fi and fantasy in such a way to not dilute either genre influence.  I would highly suggest getting into this before the next arc starts up.  There's a lot of potential for this to continue being an epic adventure, and I look forward to tuning in next time.

Planet Gigantic 3

Yuri is confronted by a past foe as Valentina and Lyana square off against a giant centipede. Also in this issue: Lyana the Seeker journeys to the underwater wreck of a grand skyship. When she arrives, she soon realizes there is more than treasure buried there.

The epic space adventure continues..is what I wanted to say.  I almost did it last time, and I still thought about it here.  In all seriousness though, with the story now full throttle, I couldn’t wait to see what happened next in Planet Gigantic book 3.  There were all kinds of fun surprises, most especially the very end.

The third issue of our adventure starts off revealing who Yuri’s mystery cell mate ends up being that was hinted at in issue two.  It also turns out becoming an unexpected ally which I’m guessing will come into play later.  The bulk of this book of course is on fight with the giant centipede that our two young ladies have found themselves trying to deal with.  Their escapade with the huge bug (plural later on) is actually quite fun and it was impressive in how they worked it out.

With a ton of action and lots of sci-fi visuals in this issue, the artwork was probably the best so far.  I also really enjoyed the color scheme for the end of the book short story in this issue.  The only thing I was a little iffy on was the overabundance of glow again.  I really like how it makes everything so in your face, but it wore on me a little this time.

To be honest, the only real disappoint I can say I have is that issue four is going to be the conclusion.  I know there’s a good chance it may become a regular series, and I’m personally hoping for it.  Whether or not the next one is it for good, you should grab what has come out so far in preparation for the finale.

Planet Gigantic 2

When Queen Neva takes Yuri and Valentina prisoner, she puts them to work in the infamous Blood Mines of Woodmere. Meanwhile, Neva and her dark sorcerer Narog devise a plot to steal their power. Also, a steadfast messenger must carry the fate of the war across an unforgiving landscape!

When we last left off in our epic space adventure..

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.  It just seemed a fitting way to start off on this next chapter for this, well, epic space adventure.  I wasn’t sure quite the direction that it was going in at first, but then again, with only one issue how could I?  Now that we’re a little further in, I am much more interested in the story.  Not that it should come as any shock, but Planet Gigantic could become one of my new favorites.

After being captured by the evil Queen Neva, our two genetically super powered siblings find themselves being carted off to slave away in the Blood Mines.  Upon arriving, they end up being separated, with Valentina sent off to work the mines.  She comes to find that one of her fellow prisoners is a princess who purposely got “captured” to plot against Neva.  In her haste to show off, Valentina ends up getting the pair into a rather challenging situation.

Unlike the first bit of issue one, I had absolutely no problems navigating the book this time.  All the artwork illustrated all the different parts of the story with no issue.  This issue had quite a lot of impressive color work, between the glow of the Blood Mines to the way the lights in darker areas illuminated right off the page.

I am seriously enjoying the heck out of this new series.  The additional side story at the end of this issue was really strong and I love that they’re adding those.  I’m not sure if this is a short run book or not, but I’m really hoping it ends up going for a while.  With it just starting, do yourself a favor and add this to your pull list to get into it now.

Planet Gigantic 1

When two genetically-engineered teenagers crash-land on a strange planet, they must learn to rely on themselves and their still-developing powers as they face down a giant rock monster. Also in this issue: Lyana the Seeker braves a cursed tomb in search of the fabled Eye of the Sun.

Of the many topics that sci-fi explores, one of the most intriguing is probably that of genetic engineering.  Where would we stop when it comes to enhancing the capabilities of humans?  Although intentions may just be good at the root of it, you can’t deny that it enters a gray area of ethics.  With Action Lab’s new title Planet Gigantic, we see just how far science might try to take this controversial field.

Our first peek into this futuristic voyage has us following along with two young space explorers that unexpectedly land on a curious planet.  As we soon find out, these are no average teens due to their powers granted through genetic alteration.  After trying to help in a struggle between a rock monster and planet dwellers, they are not so kindly introduced to an apparent queen.  Even with their powers they are no match for her minions and are hauled off as prisoners.

As a whole the artwork inside this space thriller is pretty darn good.  I struggled a bit at the beginning trying to sort out what was going on, but beyond that the story moves along quite smoothly.  One thing in particular that was really fun was the way this cover was done.  It has that old school sci-fi pulp magazine look to it that is just so fitting.

With an additional short story tossed in at the end about events going on elsewhere on the planet, this first issue paved the way for a neat adventure.  Even though it’s primarily a sci-fi tale, it has some cool fantasy influence mixed in that I enjoyed.  I’d like to see more about both storylines, and would certainly give thumbs up on trying this series out.
