Oz: Reign of the Witch Queen 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Part 3 of the epic Oz trilogy BEGINS! The witch Zamora and the murderous Warlord have been routed, but for how long? As Thorne, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Smynth, and Adraste rally the good people of Oz, civil war and flying monkeys threaten the Realm of Hope. Dorothy Gale saved Oz once before, but who will save it from Dorothy Gale?

I must preface this review by saying that while I am very familiar with the original Oz mythos, I have never read an Oz comic. My book knowledge didn’t do a whole lot to help me understand what was going on here.

The writing here is heavy-handed, falling prey to the overuse of made up fantasy slang. The art is very pretty, but the character design left me put-off. All the women are very scantily clad, and I found that unrealistic and distracting - a problem often present in the fantasy genre, and often present in comics. Maybe I should have expected it.

It’s hard to glean any real character development here, though there is a twist that keeps the reader wondering what will happen next, and I think that’s the saving grace of this title.

I have a feeling that fans of the series will enjoy it greatly, but new readers may find themselves a little bored, not sure what character to root for, and unable to completely follow the story. The writers do throw some backstory in, but not quite enough to really hook me as a new reader. Hopefully it will be expanded on in the next issue, or there will be more character development.

Fantasy fans in general may enjoy this - it certainly fits the fantasy genre, though it’s a little overwrought.

You can find out more and purchase this title from Zenescope right over here.

Zenescope’s OZ #1 sells out

Posted by Katie on 1:04 PM

Best-selling #1 issue in company’s history

Zenescope Entertainment has announced that the #1 issue of its brand new title, Grimm Fairy Tales presents OZ, has sold out of its initial 30,000 copy print run. The publisher has ordered a second printing of the debut issue for immediate release.

Zenescope’s re-imagining of the Oz mythology was one of the top-selling titles through Diamond in July and the best-selling Oz related book of the month. Making that feat impressive is the fact that publishing giant, Marvel Comics, also released the #1 issue of its new series, The Emerald City of Oz, in July as well.

The success of Zenescope’s OZ and the company’s other best-selling titles, such as Wonderland and Grimm Fairy Tales, solidifies the ever-growing entertainment company as a top mainstay in the comic book market.

“I'm very happy that so many retailers and fans have taken a chance on this book. I hope they’re enjoying reading it as much as I am writing it.” said Zenescope President and series writer, Joe Brusha. “We've been planning this series for such a long time and it's great to have a successful launch after having put so much work into it. We're looking forward to publishing more Oz series and continuing to expand the Grimm Universe.

Oz #1 is currently available digitally through ComiXology and can also be ordered directly on Zenescope’s website. Visit www.zenescope.com and www.facebook.com/Zenescope for more information on all of Zenescope’s titles.

Zenescope Entertainment Announces OZ

Posted by Katie on 11:09 AM

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans to publish its newest Grimm Fairy Tales comic book spinoff entitled OZ. Fans of Zenescope’s comics have been looking forward to the company’s re-imagining of this classic story for quite a while as it’s been hinted at in numerous issues over the past two years. Oz will finally make its much-anticipated debut at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con and hit retailer shelves in late July.

Zenescope’s President and co-founder, Joe Brusha, will be handling the writing for the new Oz series. “We’re very excited to finally reveal the fourth realm of the Grimm Fairy Tales Universe.” said Brusha “We’ve already introduced alternate versions of Neverland and Wonderland and have been planning Oz for such a long time and now we finally get to deliver something epic to our fans. I hope they enjoy reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it.”

This modern take on the Oz story retells the classic mythology with a fascinating blend of dark fantasy and action-packed adventure. It begins as the witches of Oz search for a lost weapon of power known as the Veridian Scepter. Their quest ultimately leads them to the unlikeliest of places – the farmlands of Kansas - and specifically to the home of a young woman named Dorothy Gale.

The first issue features interior artwork by newcomer Rolando Neto and covers by superstar artists J Scott Campbell, Artgerm, Eric Basaldua and Ale Garza and is available now for pre-order in Diamond's May edition of PREVIEWS for a July 2013 release. For more information on Oz or any other Zenescope title, visit www.zenescope.com or follow their updates on Facebook and Twitter.
