Fight Like a Girl 4

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

ROUND 4! Amarosa has made it through three trials that have all tested her in ways she couldn't imagine. Though her fourth trail is colossal in more ways than one, finding out what makes her special may be the key to her success. The question is... will she figure it out in time?

Some people fight for fame.  Some fight to prove something to themselves.  Some, like our heroine Amarosa, fight for the ones we love.  She has thus far been successful in her quest, but will the trial in this fourth issue of Fight Like a Girl be too much for her this time?

Although I missed out on Round 2 (issue 2), I think this was my favorite trial of them all.  Amarosa squares off against another seemingly impossible foe with her ever changing bat.  This time though, it is not just the giant creature she must defeat.  Sometimes it is that which is inside you that you must overcome in order to triumph.  *cue cheesy heroic music*

Not only was this trial my favorite so far, but I think the artwork this issue was set in was the best one yet.  The environment was not only gorgeously laid out but the colors were, well, really pretty.  As with the theme of the story of course, there was some cool looking action.  Then there's that crazy bat that turns into practically anything, you gotta love that.

As this issue now wraps up what will now be the first volume, the ending as you'd imagine leaves you grabbing for more.  With all the fight sequences taking the foreground, you almost forget the drive behind the quest but the end provides enough emotional force to remind you.  Things are bound to get even more intense once Volume 2 opens, so be sure to catch up with these four soon.

Fight Like a Girl 3

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

ROUND THREE! Amarosa has survived two grueling fights and now the stakes are even higher as she finds herself where she never dreamed she'd be: space! Her hands are full trying to survive and learn about herself, but it seems that everyone knows more about her then she does!

I don't particularly like jumping around a series, especially when trying to review it, but sometimes it can't be avoided.  Granted, I only missed the second issue of the series so far, but even one issue can leave you hanging.  Hopefully, with how it seems Fight Like a Girl is set up, I didn't lose out on any major information.

With the third battle of Amarosa, she faces off against her latest foe in the expanse of outer space.  The first and presumably second battle have not exactly been simple, and this one is no exception.  At one point, it almost appears as if her quest to save her brother is over, but she manages to get back into the fight.  As you'd have to think, she also happens to win, in quite brutal fashion.

While I was a bit unsure of how the artwork sat with me in the opening issue, I felt more comfortable with it here.  There are still some places where I had to double back, but that's mostly just due to the unconventional story itself, not the artwork.  The style has that rougher approach to it, but is doing a decent job illustrating this very different kind of tale.

There was definitely far less of the "normal" world in this issue, save for a brief scene with Amarosa and her boyfriend.  With the slight gap I had in reading, I don't know for sure why exactly that is even written in honestly.  Even so, this wild adventure that has virtually no limit in its creativity is still a pretty fun read and has potential to grow even better.

Fight Like a Girl 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

Standing before a jury of nine gods, Amarosa pleads for a chance to risk her life and gain entry to the Wishing Well where she will attempt to fight her way through and survive nine trials to claim her prize: a single wish that will save her terminally-ill brother.

Sometimes, you get a good story based completely in reality.  Other times you get a wild fantasy spawned from the imagination.  Once in a while, you even come across a really neat book that manages to blend the two.  With Fight Like a Girl, that is the fun new mix of old school mythological quests and kickass modern girl that we get to experience.

Our focus begins with our heroine Amarosa approaching a group of gods to decide whether or not she will be allowed entry to a series of trials.  The ultimate goal if she can pass this gauntlet?  Any wish she wants, in which she hopes to wish for her dying brother to be saved.  They agree, and she enters the first playing field and the adventure begins as she faces off against her first foe.  Be prepared for anything, as you probably aren’t expecting what I saw in issue one.

The style of artwork we see in this launch issue had me torn honestly.  In the first pages, I actually liked how it felt in Amarosa’s meeting.  Then as the story moved on, especially during her fight in trial one, it was a little rough.  If I get to read further issues, it may grow on me.  Either way, it still does a decent job of visual telling the story.

While this may have a basis in a seemingly normal Earth, it definitely is overshadowed by all things not normal.  Not normal in the sense that you don’t fight shapeshifters with a chainsaw bat every day.  Now that the story is moving forward full tilt with the crazy trials Amarosa must pass, I’m sure it will be pure fantasy.  This should be a fun series as it continues on and is one I think will prove worth picking up.
