Feathers 5

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

Feeling alone and betrayed by Bianca and Gabriel, Poe finds a humbled and apologetic Z,
who tells him that all the Mice have been taken by the Scarf Man.

A friend feeling absolutely betrayed and tired of being an outcast.  The other friend feeling terrible for not doing more and sick of nobody listening.  A city, divided not just by walls, but by beliefs.  The next to last issue number five of Feathers is really taking all the tension thus far and setting up for a great close.

Poe returns home after Bianca lets him down, but no sooner leaves when he finds out his father knew about the guide all this time.  He soon stumbles upon Z and learns just what is happening to all the children who've gone missing.  On the other side of the situation, Bianca tries desperately to reason with her mother about what really happened when she safely gets home.  In an effort to sneak off and right things, her father finds her yet assists knowing her good and brave intentions.

While the beautiful views we saw a lot of recently aren't present here, the artwork is no less wonderful.  The very expressive lineart and gorgeous colors hold up their end of the book just as strong as ever.  Even without any wide angle shots through the sky, the art in here still soars.

One issue left, and I'm so drawn into this series that I just don't want it to end.  Everything is really coming together so well and I can only imagine how fantastic the last book will be.  You most definitely want to be grabbing these books, whether you're following along or catching up in preparation of the ending.

Feathers 4

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 8:00 AM

Good friends are hard to come by in the Maze. Poe and Bianca will have to stick together and outsmart the Guard if they want to reach the White Guide, but a new revelation may shake their courage.

As if living in the bad part of a very divided city wasn't bad enough, getting betrayed by those you thought you were protecting definitely stings.  With a new friend to protect, multiple new threats to deal with, Poe is in a lot of trouble.  Issue four of Feathers is really starting to build the story up and it was in my opinion the best yet.

After the "leader" of the Mice aka the Maze children tries to get the city Guards to capture Poe, it is thanks to the help of a friend that he and Bianca manage to escape.  No sooner than they do, the mysterious figure from the shadows taking the Mice appears.  He gives Poe a tough choice to make - his life for the lives of Bianca the other children.  Once again making a daring escape, he brings Bianca back to the city, only to end up in a very harsh situation with the residents.

I've loved the artwork right from the beginning and it just keeps on delivering.  There was a lot more action, and some more excellent aerial views of the city that drew me in here.  I also really enjoyed seeing more of the so to speak Pied Piper character, as well as the White Guide.

This was a very strong issue, in both the writing, the art and definitely the emotional attachment.  The end scene had me feeling so involved in the heartbreaking interaction with Poe and Bianca.  I absolutely want to keep reading on after this issue and would highly suggest getting into this series.

Feathers 3

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 11:00 AM

Betrayal comes from all sides as Poe's new friendship with Bianca creates chaos in the Maze, and the pair discover they may have even fewer allies than they thought in their race to the heart of the City.

The closest of friends can come from the most opposite of worlds.  The worst of friends can equally come from the same world.  Both of these are a big part of what drives the third issue of Feathers, as sad as the latter being true is for our lead character.

With the way it ended in issue two, it was pretty evident things were going to get pretty intense.  Poe and his father have a pretty heated discussion, and he runs off again with Bianca.  Poor Bianca just wants to get home, and with her now disheveled appearance, finds out city guards think she's just a kid from the Maze.  On top of it all, people who Poe thought were his friends turn out to be more worried about themselves.

Yet again, the artwork has kept my eye's full attention and got even better.  There were some really sharp sequences going on in this story that drew me in.  In particular, there was this absolutely wonderful and vibrant set of panels with some really great contrast in color.  Of course, we also got some great shots of the massive city that our characters live in that were done quite nice.

I had a really good feeling about this title from the first issue and that has not changed up to this point.  As it appears we're now getting into the really good stuff, I'm very anxious to see how things turn out in the next book.  It's not too late to grab onto this book while it's still fairly fresh and I would definitely say it'd be worth doing so.

Feathers 2

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 2:00 PM

Fresh from their near-miss escape from the Guards, Bianca and Poe strike a deal: If he guides her through the treacherous Maze, she will take him to see the White Guide, a feathered statue in the City that may hold the key to Poe’s origins. It’s an adventure that will take them from the lowest shadows to the highest rooftops, with untold dangers along the way...and not everyone in the Maze is happy about their new alliance.

Whenever you start a new book or show, sometimes you can tell right away if you'll like it, sometimes it takes a while.  I typically try to wait a few issues or episodes before I make a judgement, but sometimes I just decide on a whim.  I could almost tell from issue one of Feathers that I'd grow to love it, and the follow up definitely kept that possibility strong.

Issue two of this fun tale really starts building from where we left off in the intro book.  Poe and his new friend Bianca get to know each other more and learn more of how they see things from their very different sides of the city.  Along the way of the so to speak "tour" of the Maze, they even manage to come across a new pal that doesn't run off at the sight of Poe.  The fun comes to abrupt stop though once Poe's father manages to find him.

Just as much as the story improved, I think the art did as well.  We got to see a lot more of the city, as well as quite a bit more characters both major and minor.  All around both the illustrations and coloring are just wonderful.  In particular I really enjoyed any scenes involving the "Guide" character hinted at throughout the book.

As I expected, this is turning out to be a really great title to get into.  The story and art have more than stayed solid, and have not only kept my interest but increased it.  I would gladly suggest this to readers of all interests and ages and should certainly be on your watch list.

Feathers 1

Posted by Geek-o-Rama Admin on 1:00 PM

A recluse boy born covered in feathers must help his first-ever friend, a young girl named Bianca, as she tries to return to her home beyond the slums of the Maze. They must dodge street gangs and child-snatchers along the way, and perhaps together will learn the secrets to his mysterious past.

Being different is a theme that many of us can relate to.  In this instance though, it’s a certain kind of different that is not exactly something we can directly understand.  Even so, this fantastic new story that is being told with Feathers is one that still manages to be endearing and relatable.

On one side of this tale, we have the feathered young lad Poe, abandoned as a baby and raised by the kind man who found him.  Living in the Maze aka the poor part of the city, he is a free spirit who goes exploring at every opportunity he gets.  On the other side, of both the story and city, we have the equally spirited young lady Bianca.  When their paths cross by sheer chance, their biggest adventure barely just begins.

Not only was I very intrigued with the story, but the art also grabbed me.  With a good amount of the book set in the dark of night and the alleys of the city, the visuals still stood out strong.  Along with all the great art of the city itself and the other characters, Poe in particular as you’d imagine was a really fun design.

As this is only the first book in the title, I have a feeling that Feathers is going to be a wonderful book to keep reading.  It’s really fun and hits all the right notes to be a meaningful story as it continues.  I for one would like to keep going as they are released and would suggest the same for fellow readers.
